This is the new home of this thread which has now died as none of the active particpants want to operate behind the new local barrier.

For any newbies - we are meeting usually on the last monday of each month (plus or minus a week depending on other things going on). The dates of our next 2 meetings were fixed last time we met but I am not 100% sure of them, hopefully one of the others will be along in a moment to confirm them. Venues are variable and we take it in turns whether they are north or south of the river so everyone has occasions when the meeting is nearer to them.

We are deciding the books 2 months in advance to give ourselves plenty of time to find a copy and read it. We decide which book to schedule by concensus at the end of each meeting - anyone can suggest one.

Our next meeting will be at the end of November and we are reading "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Philip K Dick

The next meeting (which will be in mid January) will be looking at "The Magicians" by Lev Grossman.

Just finished Lightning Rods - how's everyone else doing?

I was going to lend Lamazeroo my copy of Lightning Rods, but apparently she's got her own on the way, so would anyone else like to borrow mine? Not a difficult read, so you've got plenty of time before book group to read it.

Just finished the Magicians! it was ace. If I aim to be permanently one book behind I think this will add a certain je ne sais quois to our group.

So I can't tempt you with a slightly-used copy of Lightning Rods then, Spero? Possibly slightly more intellectually challenging than lying on the sofa binging on DVD box-sets, but only slightly.

Report
Spero · 05/02/2013 12:55

You surely can, how may I best effect hand over of said oeuvre?

Report
MrsWembley · 05/02/2013 21:25

Bearing in mind the topic of said novel, surely 'slightly-used' is a tad... urm... eewww?

exexpat · 05/02/2013 22:12

Possibly. Or maybe I should be offering a pre-read copy of Proust in the original French (have you read that far yet?).

Nooooo, but I can't wait!!Grin

I've got Lightning Rods on my kindle now and am about 20% through. Can't say I'm loving it yet but I'll stick with it.

Don't worry, you're welcome to come and slag it off - I suggested that one because I thought it might be a bit controversial. It gets a bit boring if we only read books everyone loves...

MrsWembley · 15/02/2013 19:14

Can I just say, thank-you for recommending it! It is not a book I would have picked up myself, but I am loving it.Grin

Looking forward to the meet-up.Wink

Hello! Can I play too please?

Have been thinking for a while that I would really like to do the Bookclub thing and here you are. I rarely manage a night out and spend far too many slouched on the sofa watching rubbish TV or spodding. Your next meeting is pretty soon though and I am not too sure if I will manage to get the book and read it in time.
Lamazearoo - Think I might know you in Real Life!! After all how many Ozzies are there in Bristol with non sleeping babies?

MrsWembley · 19/02/2013 22:52

Hello maindoors, I'm sure if you managed to pick up the book in the next couple of days you could finish it in time, if you put your mind to it! I've just finished it and it's bloody marvellous. A good, easy read and very, very funny!Grin

Ooh who are you then? Send me a hint!

Report
Lamazeroo · 20/02/2013 19:19

Ah just worked it out (thank you Advanced Search). Do you know, I meant to tell you about this group the last time we met up, think you'd love it. Come along on Monday :)

Report
exexpat · 20/02/2013 20:43

Maindoors, I think even if you come along not having read the book, you are unlikely to be the only one - have we ever had a meeting where everyone had read the entire book? So you'd be very welcome to come along and size us up say hello.

Can I come too please? Only I don't think I can make it on Monday, is there one planned in March? (Could only find alternate months & venues listed earlier in the thread.)

Report
exexpat · 20/02/2013 21:29

There isn't one in late March because of Easter holidays etc, so it's in early April instead. I think that's the one we're reading Salmon Fishing in the Yemen for. Newbies welcome.

Report
MrsWembley · 21/02/2013 07:45

Yep, Salmon Fishing. I'm about to order my copy...

Report
slightlysoupstained · 21/02/2013 09:13

Ahh, okay - thanks. I guess that gives me a little longer to read the book. (DS is terrifically attracted by books at the mo so I can only read when he's asleep or he will try to eat it).

Advanced warning: my poor little boy is feeling very unwell today (bloody teeth) and hasn't shifted off the boob all day. If this continues tomorrow I just won't be able to make it, as he only wants me and can't be settled by his dad. Fingers crossed he improves but I fear I may have to miss another looked forward to evening :(

Looking forward to seeing you all tonight. What time are we meeting, is it eight?

I'll be driving (I live at the Horfield end of Glos Road) if anyone wants a lift.
