I am almost finished 26a by Diana Evans and finding it so-so, don't know if I just don't have the concentration for it at the moment as parts of it seem excellent and other parts don't seem to even register with me. It could be me rather than the book though.

Just being nosey and looking for future recommendations or titles to avoid. Smile

I agree In Cold Blood is gripping. Foxy, I'm well thanks very much. Hope you are too.

Marina · 11/05/2006 17:50

Lots of good reads on here - have Andrea Levy for holiday and also Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian.
Anyone else reading Hilary Mantel's Beyond Black? I have a feeling it will get nastier as it progresses, but what a brilliant read (love her work).

Marina · 11/05/2006 17:52

People who like In Cold Blood might also enjoy Midnight in the Garden of Goodness and Evil, by John Berendt.
Finished the Ishiguro a while ago - absolutely haunting.
And want that Kiffe Kiffe for my hols too, thanks for the reminder NN.

I havn't been on Mumsnet for ages but can I put in a plea for all you booklovers to check out the website for BookAid International (sorry, can't do links). They are a very well run organisation providing vital reading materials to developing countries. Often their books are what keeps the public libraries running. I used to work there pre-children and met so many African librarians who would love to get their hands on your discarded books. Please tell your library as well if it is pulping books that could be used elsewhere.

Thanks for that Kate.I always assumed it would be too expenive to ship heavy books abroad as this is what we are told about clothes?
I am in a remote part of Turkey and will give all my books to the local uni's English Dept. when I leave.

Hmmm,Marina,I have had 'Midnight' on my bookshelf for ages and was really looking forward to it,having spent afair bit of time in Savannah.
I wasn't that impressed though.

beansprout · 11/05/2006 19:46

Arthur and George by Julian Barnes. Fab.

housearrest · 11/05/2006 19:54

Hi moondog-if you haven't got to 'Stuart' as yet I hope you enjoy it. The way he unfolds his life story is very clever and by the end of the book you just don't know what to do (if you're me!) as you feel so sad for him!

KateF · 11/05/2006 21:47

Hi Moondog - good idea to donate your books locally. BAI work with partner organisations like public library services, universities and NGOs and obviously fundraise to cover shipping costs. In fact I used to work in fundraising as well as doing work on the health information side. You can get your books collected by a local Rotary Club and they will deliver them to the warehouse in Camberwell. Website is at www.bookaid.org.

Never Let me Go was fantastic, despite being a bit weird to begin with. Highly recommend it. Don't know what to read next, it has left me with the feeling that whatever book I read next will be a disappointment.

eidsvold · 15/05/2006 23:44

Just finished James Patterson Beach Road - little disappointed.... somewhat disjointed.

Discovered author Linda Fairstein - legal mystery sort of thing - good read.

MarsLady · 15/05/2006 23:48

The Accidental by Ali Smith. About a girl who descends on a family's holiday home in Norfolk. Everyone thinks she the guest of someone else. Have just started it but it's supposed to be good. Also 26a about twin girls. Not to be read by mothers of twins (according to my friend), but she thought I'd be okay as my DTs are g/b. Grin

TambaTheDragonSlayer · 15/05/2006 23:50

foxinsocks · 17/05/2006 10:08

I've just finished Saturday by Ian McEwan (bit pretentious I thought) and have started Alan Warner's The Worms Can Carry Me to Heaven. So far, it's excellent and I'm really enjoying it.

(nice to see you back mars - knew you must have been away when I started a CSI thread and you weren't on it commenting on Warrick's body!)

Daisymae · 17/05/2006 10:31

I've just finished reading Anna Maxted, 'Running in Heels', which looks like chick lit but is actually a bit more than that. I really enjoyed it.
I'm in a 'don't know what to read next' mood;I have Micheal Connelly, 'Lincoln Lawyer' or a couple of fantasy books unread. Any other ideas for my next trip to town?
