Haven't got one yet (dds 3 and 1) but really looking forward to reading

Narnia

The ones they love are

Horrid Henry
Rainbow Fairies books
Secret Unicorn books
Enchanted Wood
The Magic Wishing Chair
Gobbolino the witch's cat
Clarice Bean
The adventures of the little wooden horse

THey also love comic style books like Tintin and Asterix though I'm not sure they understand them fully (I think they like the pictures!)

mousiemousie · 16/02/2006 10:55

Lemony Snicket books

Sponge · 16/02/2006 11:05

We're doing Charlie & the Chocolate Factory withh dd (5) now and she loves it.
Narnai books have also gone down well but she does find them a bit hard to follow.

JackieNo · 16/02/2006 11:12

The Teddy Robinson books by Joan G Robinson have gone down very well with DD(6) as have all the Arabel's Raven ones by Joan Aiken. Might have something to do with DH's spirited rendition of them though - not nearly so interesting when I read them, as I don't do all the voices

clerkKent · 16/02/2006 12:53

Right now The Book of Dragons, E Nesbitt. Also Roald Dahl, Horrid Henry, Dr Seuss. DD got bored with Lemony Snicket.

MamaG · 16/02/2006 13:10

DD is 6 1/2 :-

Roald Dahl

Horrid Henry

Narnia

Going to read The Enchanted Wood next (snap KBear!! I'm sure it will be discussed via email...!)

I love reading all my childhood favourites with DD. I don't read Harry Potter with her yet as I have read them all and think they are a bit scary - dementors scared the pants off me!

Nightynight · 16/02/2006 13:10

The wind in the willows. Might be a bit stiff for them to go through on their own, but they love being read it.

fsmail · 17/02/2006 17:36

Just reading one of the Doctor who books with my five year old but it does need a lot of explaining. He is a big fan though.

WideWebWitch · 17/02/2006 17:48

I've enjoyed The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe but don't like the next ones as much
Charlotte's Web, as sad as I remember from my own girlhood
I have detested reading Enid Bloody Blyton's Famous Five but have done it because ds loves them. I should have started him on Malory Towers, durr, which I loved
Alice in Wonderland
Lots of Roald Dahl, such a pleasure to read out loud
We tried Molly Moon but gave up

sunnydelight · 17/02/2006 18:35

Dragonrider
Stig of the dump
Beaver Towers series

All a great hit at 6/7

claire7676 · 17/02/2006 19:21

My DD is 6 and loves all the Daisy Meadows books ie. Amy the Amethyst Fairy. There are loads of books all about different fairies - some are Jewel Fairies and others are weather faires. Absolutely brilliant books to read at bedtime - usually a chapter a night. She also likes them as she recognises a lot of the words and can read them to herself (with help). She is in Year 1 at school. Apart from that she likes anything. Joined the library and she picks up to about 10 books at a time and read a different one every night. I get really bored reading the same stories over and over at bedtime - so it's nice to get something completely different.

I am a Children's Librarian and am fascinated to see what people actually read. There is an excellent website at the moment that has lots of great activities for the Rainbow Fairies. Type world books day into google and you'll find it. Also a lovely Little Red Hen book to make. Also try stories from the web and the roald dahl website.

I would be very interested what you would like to see in libraries and what activities you would like us to run

robinpud · 18/02/2006 16:02

lots of the same.. in fact have had a lovely time in Waterstones buying lots more.

i HAVE TO SHOUT NOW BUT HATE HATE HATE THE RAINBOW FAIRIES. THey are so rubbish and had to resist the temptation to destroy the promotional table crammed with them in Waterstones.

I've been waiting since ds1 was born to read him the wolves of willoughby chase by joan aiken! He's 8 now and i started it the other night. I was loving it, then i found he has secretly read on and nearly finished it. She was such a wonderful author.
I like to try and find all the books I read as a child. There aren't many 'new' writers that I have liked. Oh except the brilliant Philip Pullman!

Miaou · 18/02/2006 22:52

Sorry if I'm repeating - Just finished reading Wolf Brother (Michelle Paver) to my dds aged 7 and 8. It's the first book in a series called Chronicles of Ancient Darkness. We got the second one, Spirit Walker, out of the library today - looks like it will be just as good!
