Suggestions for a series of books for me to read?

I've just finished reading a series of books and really enjoyed the excitement of starting the next one to find out what happens. Please can I have some suggestions of any good ones I could try next? I think this is going to be the year I can really get back into reading again Grin

So hard. Didn't DD always say Colin Firth for Niccolo when he was younger?

Mytholmroyd · 12/02/2012 09:47

ooooh did she? That would have been worth watching...

DamnDeDoubtance · 12/02/2012 09:57

K...so he would have to dye his hair and change his accent, but...

Those eyes, those cheekbones...sigh...

Mytholmroyd · 12/02/2012 10:22

and just enough menace and edgyness ... I can see that might work

mimbleandlittlemy · 12/02/2012 12:28

Apparently DD always said Peter O'Toole as Lawrence of Arabia was her idea of Lymond though he doesn't look much like a Della Robia angel to me. He sits a camel well but that's the wrong set of books Grin. Nowadays perhaps we need a blond Eddie Redmayne.

I'm not sure Colin Firth would do it for me, and he's getting a bit long in the tooth now for Nicholas, isn't he? Who else is out there? Someone young and edgy with caterpillar eyebrows.

DamnDeDoubtance · 12/02/2012 15:23

Colin isn't big enough for Nicholas. Claes is tall and broad.

The True Blood series by Charlaine Harris.

Bought the whole box set, took it to bed and did not rise until I'd finished it. Saw me through an entire house sale and purchase!

IAmSherlocked · 14/02/2012 21:11

I would second the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris, and the Stephanie Plum ones by Janet Evanovich.

SimoneD · 15/02/2012 10:12

Would second the Louis de Bernieres South American trilogy. Loved all of them, especially the last one, The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman,
which was brilliant.

If you like historical fiction the Boudica series by Manda Scott is amazing, couldnt put any of them down. Also enjoyed the Alexander series by Manfredo Massimo and the CJ Sansom series.

jobnockey · 15/02/2012 13:51

Jasper Fforde's 'Thursday Next' books are ace

DamnDeDoubtance · 19/02/2012 09:58

Second, or third the Sookie Stackhouse novels, also could not put them down.

KatharineClifton · 22/02/2012 00:59

I'm reading through the Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage which are good.

NaturesEnd · 22/02/2012 01:13

Dennis Lehane's Kenzie and Gennaro series are marvellous.

Mike Carey's Felix Castor novels are also brilliant.

I also enjoy Christopher Brookmyre, although not all of his books are brilliant. His latest one is apparently not good, hence my non buying.

So I'm reading this thread, and I've gone off to Amazon to get into Dorothy Dunnet, and I ask you this - why are they so expensive? Have I stumbled into the duluxe editions by mistake? The paperbacks are £17! Are they large / thick / heavily illustrated?

For a series of books, I'd recommend the Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin novels by Patrick O'Brien about the navy in the early 19th century. The first one is "Master and Commander". I first found out about them when I came across a cookbook that some American women had written which treid to recreate all of the meals that Jack and Stephen eat in the 20 novels. I thought that if they were worth writing a cookbook about, they must be worth reading! As a series, the pace really pushes on through, some of them end in real cliff-hangers. The only bum note in 20 books is the incident in which Stephen falls off the back of the boat somewhere in the Pacific, Jack dives in to save him and they both get left behind only to be picked up by lesbian warriors in a canoe Hmm.

jd Robb - Lt Eve Dallas. Hundreds of them - same formula. But very funny. Easy and quick to read which is great for me as I can only get a snatched few minutes each day Grin

Quenelle · 24/02/2012 15:37

mixedmamameansbusiness you beat me to it. I was going to suggest Louis de Berniere's trilogy too.

hugglymugly · 24/02/2012 16:10

Nevada Barr - series about Anna Pigeon who's a National Park Ranger. Murders take place in different National Parks, there are some descriptions of the history/ecology/weather.

Simon Brett - both his Charles Paris and Mrs Pargeter series are good.

More lighthearted are:

Joanne Fluke - Hannah Swenson stories - murder mysteries plus cookie recipes.

Susan Wittig Albert - China Bayles stories - murder mysteries but with herbs.

I use the Kindle App on my netbook as I find that easier to use than my Sony e-Reader.

prettymum · 26/02/2012 20:00

If you like urban fantasy the Kate Daniel series by Ilona Andrews, a husband/wife duo, are brilliant. It has magic, shapeshifters, vampires and the romance is gradual and not in your face and all the characters are great and very witty
! There are 5 books at the moment and 2 more left, and another one coming out in Jully based on another character from the book.

DamnDeDoubtance · 26/02/2012 20:18

TheSurgeonsMate- No idea why they are so expensive, you can get them cheaper on Ebay or at any bookshop.

Start with The Game of Kings.

mimbleandlittlemy · 27/02/2012 12:13

SurgeonsMate - shockingly, given what a wonderful author she is, Dorothy Dunnet is now mostly out of print which is why they are so expensive, I think. You can often pick them up in second hand bookshops or on Amazon's Used section or they are available on Kindle, though it's actually cheaper to buy used. I love them all so much I am in the slow, slow process of putting one on the Kindle each month but there's 6 in one series and 8 in the other and a stand-alone about Macbeth so I'm not rushing!

DamnDeDoubtance · 28/02/2012 11:05

I still have the ones my mum gave me from the 70s. Worn through I might add and tear streaked in certain chapters!

theonewiththenoisychild · 28/02/2012 12:50

I will read anything by diane chamberlain at the moment not a series but all of her books that i have read so far i have really enjoyed Smile
