I've just finished reading a series of books and really enjoyed the excitement of starting the next one to find out what happens. Please can I have some suggestions of any good ones I could try next? I think this is going to be the year I can really get back into reading again Grin

Phil Rickman, his series about Merrily Watkins is excellent.

mimbleandlittlemy · 01/02/2012 14:08

Oooh, DamndeDoubtance, you aren't a fellow Dorothy Dunnett reader are you?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/02/2012 18:17

I didn't like a lot of the ones mentioned here (eg I think Kate Atkinson is appalling, the Steig Larson unreadable and The Game Of Thrones v badly written) but I would totally recommend -

Harry Potter
The CJ Sansom ones somebody elese mentioned
The Philip Pullman His Dark materials series
Lian Hearne's Tales of the Otori series (teenage)
Stephen King's Dark Tower series
The Lord Of The Rings trilogy
The Knife Of Never Letting Go trilogy (teenage)
The Ladies Detective ones are a bit samey but v sweet for an easy bathtime read
Terry Pratchet's Sam Vines series
Yes to Sherlock Holmes stories
There's a guy called Frank Tallis who writes a series set in Vienna and featuring Freud - again they get a bit samey but the first few are pretty good.

Susan Howatch wrote a great series of novels based around a fictional cathedral town of Starbridge - highly recommended. First one is Glittering Images and there are six in the series, I think.

Penny Vincenzi's trilogy about a publishing house - the Spoils of Time series, starting with No Angel.

Second Sue Grafton detective series. Really sharp and witty.

mimbleandlittlemy indeed I am, best...books...ever...

I reread them every couple of years or so and still get bits I missed.

I see you are also a Moomin fan. Smile

Wishiwasarestaurantcritic · 04/02/2012 20:10

M C Beaton Hamish Macbeth, Agatha Raisen and Travelling Matchmaker...great, funny, light hearted murder mysteries, not deep or meaningful and no need to concentrate hard, but very entertaining, a little predictable and always a happy ending!

pinkhebe · 04/02/2012 20:16

Elizabeth Peters - Amelia Peabody series (egyptologist murder mysteries set in 1910 -1930ish)

Cynthia Harrod Eagles - Morland dynasty - follows a family from the war of the roses to modern day

mimbleandlittlemy · 07/02/2012 10:15

Yes, Damnde, Moomins are Top Notch but Dunnett is Top Notchier!

Currently rereading Queen's Play on the DD front. Haven't read it for ages and I'd forgotten just how good it is.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/02/2012 19:04

Amelia Peabody gets very samey, very quickly - but I thoroughly enjoyed the first few I read: they are like The Famous Five set in Egypy and with Ann transformed into an eccentric lady instead of chief cook and bottle washer.

redrubyshoes · 07/02/2012 19:17

Antonia White, start with Frost in May and then you will be desperate to find out what happens next.

MissLofPubia · 08/02/2012 13:01

I love the Rebus novels. There are about 17 of them I think, going from the 80's to the 00's x

DamnDeDoubtance · 08/02/2012 18:52

I am currently re reading the Niccolos Mimble. There is nothing like the emotional ride that Dorothy Dunnett takes you on.

I adore the Lymond series but after reading I find it really hard to read anything else as all other books seem pale in comparison.

KindleAddict · 08/02/2012 21:30

I'm currently devouring The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and MockingJay. I loved the first book, liked the 2nd and have just started the 3rd. The film comes out in March and I can't wait to see it in action.

Also love the Jackson Brodie books and Girl with Dragon Tattoo series (just have to scan quickly through the boring parts).

pointythings · 09/02/2012 22:16

Seconding Merrily Watkins, brilliant psychological/supernatural fiction.

If you're into crime, try J.D Robb's 'In Death' series - kind of a cross between police procedural, romance and sci-fi, very addictive.

NoOnesGoingToEatYourEyes · 10/02/2012 15:03

Agree with the suggestion of The Dark Tower Series (new one out soon!)

Camilla Lackberg is a Scandinavian crime writer whose crime series features a husband and wife team (he's a police officer, she's a writer) and I've enjoyed the ones I've read of hers.

Mytholmroyd · 10/02/2012 16:20

Not wandered into this topic before ... and never met anyone else who reveres Dorothy Dunnett like I do!

They were a revelation as they were the first books I had read where I could not guess what was coming - ever. Such prose and elegant convoluted plotting ...

Do love GH too though.

saoifre · 10/02/2012 22:12

the Smiley books (John le Carre), specifically Tinker, Tailor, the Honourable School Boy and Smiley's People. Oh the treat if you've still to read them!

Cloudminnow · 11/02/2012 10:28

Susan Hill's Serrailler books, if you like detective fiction.
Elizabeth Jane Howard's Cazalet Chronicles for family theme set around WW2

ptangyangkipperbang · 11/02/2012 10:33

Yes to Jo Nesbo. Far better written than Millennium Trilogy.

mixedmamameansbusiness · 11/02/2012 10:52

I am going to suggest the Louis de Bernieres South American trilogy. It isnt exactly one following on from the other, but they do contain the same characters and threads do run through.

He is a love him or hate him kind of writer though.

The War of Don Emmanuels Nether Regions
Senor Vivo and the Coco Lord (this contains huge amounts of violence and is the only book I was ever a bit [shocked] about with LDB)
The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman

Should you happen to love him, you will be hooked.

DamnDeDoubtance · 11/02/2012 13:03

Waves back at Mytholmroyd

They really are amazing books aren't they. I loved the way she tied the entire series together.

There are some chapters that break your heart, Pawn in Frankincense I am looking at you. Others are just hilarious or just so goddamn clever it makes your head fall off.

post · 11/02/2012 13:25

Grinning to see other Dorothy Dunnett lovers! God, they're just the best, aren't they?

VJayazzle · 11/02/2012 20:55

I'm currently reading the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon as recommended on here, there are 7 books in the series, I think, and you can get them on a kindle. I'm loving them, so thanks whoever recommended them Smile

HeavensNetIsWide · 11/02/2012 21:05

I'm another vote for Game of Thrones, but bear in mind the last books of the series aren't written yet. Other fantasy series I love are Robin Hobb, particularly the Farseer Trilogy starting with The Assassins Apprentice, and Lian Hearn's 'Tales of the Otori' series.

On the girlier side, I love LM Alcott's Little Women/Good Wives/Little Men!

Mytholmroyd · 11/02/2012 21:08

Yes, wonderfully clever - why are they not better known? Or have I just missed it? Will they do a TV series one day? Who would play Lymond?
