I have a new kindle. Yay!

I used to read lots of Stephen King when I was younger (Carrie, Salems Lot, Pet Sematary etc) but haven't read any of his newer stuff (er from 20 yrs or so) so if someone could be so kind and let me know which is a must have, I'd be very grateful.

Lisey's Story was quite good, but rather "other worldly" so not sure if you like those types of his books or not. I am more a straight horror fan myself.

Misery is excellent, if you haven't read that?

I read Cell recently and that was quite compelling, his Night Shift short story collection was good too.

ElectricSoftParade · 12/01/2012 12:40

Read The Stand. Blooming brilliant.

Hathall · 12/01/2012 14:03

I've read The Stand and agree, brilliant. I've read Misery.

I'll look at Lisey's story and Cell.

(I was in Tesco's and 11.22.63 was at £7.99 so I bought it. So much for the Kindle!Smile)

I didn't enjoy Lisey's Story as much as his others, thought it was a bit confusing and not as well-written.

I've really enjoyed Bag of Bones, Hearts in Atlantis, The Girl who Loved Tom Gordan, From a Buick 8, Under the Dome and The Dark Tower series of course!

HTH

LaVengeance · 12/01/2012 16:41

Loved The Stand, Insominia, Cell.

ShirleyKnottage · 12/01/2012 16:43

Bag of Bones was fab tilly

I also like "Duma Key" scared the poop out of me, really good.

I've got only a little bit left of 11.22.63 - I'm making it last.

Chocolategirl3 · 12/01/2012 16:45

Under The Dome, The Regulators, Desperation, Rose Madder all good reads along with Cell and Insomnia

NoMoreMarbles · 12/01/2012 16:45

IT, through the eye of the dragon, rose madder, dark tower series... All brilliant x

Sidge · 12/01/2012 16:46

I liked Insomnia, Thinner, Under The Dome, Different Seasons, Skeleton Crew and Nightmares and Dreamscapes, (the last 3 are short stories collections).

Also Carrie, It, Cujo, The Shining, Firestarter, Dead Zone.

I prefer his older stuff TBH, but I did like Cell recently.

NoMoreMarbles · 12/01/2012 16:47

Sorry about the rogue xHmm Meant to type Smile Durr

Abcinthia · 12/01/2012 17:11

Under The Dome is really good.

MadamTwoSwords · 12/01/2012 17:14

The Stand and IT are great on kindle as no lugging the hefty books about!

The Dark Tower series is good too although the later ones in the series are better.

tillyfernackerpants · 12/01/2012 18:05

Under the Dome would be good on the Kindle as well, that's a bit of a hefty book!!

worley · 12/01/2012 18:07

another Cell fan! loves it, would like to see it as a film.

HollyGoDroopy · 12/01/2012 18:13

Under The Dome and 11.22.63. I adored both.

tillyfernackerpants · 12/01/2012 20:12

Also Nightmares & Dreamscapes is my favourite short story collection.

I have 22.11.63 but haven't started it yet, waiting until I have at least a day to myself to make a good dent into it Grin

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/01/2012 21:28

'The Stand' is his masterpiece imho and I also really, really love 'The Dark Tower' series (though they do require you having some time on your hands to get really stuck into them!) The first one might not entirely grip you but do keep going because they get better and better. 'It' is another of his finest, I think.

I'm not overly fond of his short stories but 'Survivor Type' from 'Skeleton Crew' is magnificent.

I've re-read lots and lots of his recently and the ones that have stood out most have been, 'Dead Zone,' 'The Dark Half,' 'The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon' and two Bachman books - 'Blaze' (which I enjoyed much more on second reading - you need to know 'Of Mice And Men' for it to work properly) and 'The Regulators' (which is a kind of 'twin' of 'Desperation').

Don't read, 'Needful Things' - it's crap.

tillyfernackerpants · 13/01/2012 18:25

Remus, I wasn't as keen on Blaze. I thought it kind of petered out towards the end, almost like he didn't know how to finish. But The Regulators/Desperation are good, haven't read them in a while actually.

One of his novellas that stuck with me is The Long Walk - definitely worth a read. Also The Shawshank Redemption and Apt Pupil.

BenderBendingRodriguez · 13/01/2012 19:04

Do you know, I really didn't rate The Stand that much. And I am a massive SK fan. Loved the first half when everyone dies, but it fell apart towards the end. Finding out he had a massive drink problem during those years explained a lot Grin

I haven't read much past his 'classic' era, so I would say my favourites are Firestarter, Dead Zone, Salem's Lot etc. but I still love the first four Bachman books and The Dark Half. Also, Gerald's Game scared the crap out of me. I still sometimes think of it and shudder.

His short stories, esp the earlier ones, are excellent.

You might also like Joe Hill's stuff. He is another amazing short story writer.

Perhaps I will make the effort to read some more recent SK; I lost interest a bit after Nightmares and Dreamscapes which I thought was pretty wack.

StickyProblem · 13/01/2012 19:07

I can't get into The Dome... I like his early parts where there is some normality, and I can skip through the worst horror parts. The Dome starts with all the awfulness at the beginning! I loved The Cell, and Thinner years ago.

Mrsrobertduvall · 13/01/2012 19:08

11.22.63 is amazing.

bigkidsdidit · 13/01/2012 19:08

The Bachman books - which he wrote when he was 16 - are brilliant. Chilling.

Valpollicella · 13/01/2012 19:08

Have you read Four Past Midnight?

It's a collection... Very good. The Langoliers is frrrrrreaky

PoppadumPreach · 13/01/2012 19:11

i don't read any horror stuff so that rules a lot of his stuff out for me, but i loved

"Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption" and "The Body" (aka stand by me)

ok i loved the films first, but the books are good too

BenderBendingRodriguez · 13/01/2012 19:14

Poppadum you might like The Eyes of the Dragon then - it's more of a fantasy novel, but very satisfying. I seem to recall that he said he wrote it for his daughter as she was always asking him to write something less gory that she could read.
