I am reading Julian Barnes The Sense of an Ending. Loving it.
Also Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I have never read them before Blush but am in the process of reading them to/with ds and thoroughly enjoying them.
Have got so many books piled up to read it is really quite exciting!

I loved Wolf Hall and The Childrens Book too - desperately seeking something like them ...
This year I have read latest Shardlake (good, but not as good as some others by him - reliable), My Sister lives on the Mantelpiece (brilliant first novel everyone should read), Netherland (not getting on with it - think its weird - and I love cricket), Pigeon English (devastating and good too - preferred it to the Julian Barnes), started Jamrach's Menagerie but wanted something easier (had flu so needed trash) but looking forward to going back to it. Had a good voice. And a couple of Georgette Heyer's as trash ...

I'm about half way through A.L.Kennedy's The Blue Book.

I chose it because it has a lovely blue cover with a golden hand and the very edge of all the pages are dyed blue.

Like it a lot so far and it's quite different to what I usually read.
Wish I had more time to read. Have compiled a list from this thread.

I'm reading The Buccaneers by Edith Wharton which is good fun; that's on my kindle. Also reading Memories, Dreams & Reflections by Carl Jung. It's tough to get into and a bit weird but I really want to read it, especially as my mum bought it for me for Xmas. It's a nice old version too!

notnowImreading · 17/01/2012 19:12

I've just finished 'The Gate at the Stairs', which was good - not one I'd have picked up normally. Sad, though, about little kids, so not for everyone.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/01/2012 21:08

'Dorian Grey' and 'Northanger Abbey' both excellent - v Envy of you reading them for the first time!

Plutothatpresentdown · 17/01/2012 21:40

I've read Middlesex by Eugenides (brilliant) The Snowman by Nesbo (ace) and The Emperor of Lies by Steven Sem Sanberg (very hard work) since Christmas. I'm tempted to download another Eugenides but will probably do a Shardlake as a quickie before then.

pharmgirl · 17/01/2012 21:49

Can someone convince me to stick with JFK? Not really gripping me, but have heard great comments. It's so BIG!

pharmgirl · 17/01/2012 21:52

Sorry, i mean 11.22.63 by Stephen King. (i think of it as the JFK book)

LHBW · 19/01/2012 14:48

I have managed to get my hands on a proof copy of "The Mother of All Journeys: Coming to terms with having a baby" by Helen Bells. It is excellent reading and I can totally empathise with the author about how hard she found it to adapt to being a mum. Took about 1 1/2 hours to read and I think it would be particularly helpful to those who have had or think they have PND. Not sure when it is going to be released but this is the website for it: www.themotherofalljourneys.co.uk Highly recommended!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/01/2012 17:21

The King is worth sticking with but by no means one of his best.

nursenic · 20/01/2012 09:50

I think recent King novels would benefit from some editorial pruning. Stick with it but skim selectively.

Abcinthia · 20/01/2012 12:43

I am currently reading If Walls Could Talk - Lucy Worsley and Hidden Child - Camilla Lackberg.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 20/01/2012 18:14

Witness the Night by Kishwar Desai.

kikidee · 20/01/2012 20:00

I've just started The Rules of Civility and think it will be very good. Just finished Eleven by Mark Watson as recommended by a friend. An easy read but not great.

DuchessofMalfi · 22/01/2012 09:47

The Girl Who Played With Fire by Stieg Larsson.

Dillydaydreaming · 22/01/2012 12:09

Room by Emma Donaghue was just brilliant.
Death at Pemberley - not the greatest of PD James work but was still okay.
The Litigators by John Grisham was good too.

Abcinthia · 22/01/2012 18:43

Jude The Obscure - Hardy and The Boys From Brazil - Ira Levin.

howdoo · 22/01/2012 22:26

Have just finished Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay which I really liked - have read a lot of Auschwitz books but this was the first novel as opposed to memoir. Galloped through it - very easy read.
Before that I read State of Wonder by Ann Patchett - it's interesting but a bit of a slow burn, until the last 30 pages or so. Would recommend it.
Is Jo Nesbo worth a go - I hear he's like Stieg Larsson?
Dilly, why was Room so good?

ramblinrose · 23/01/2012 22:12

Jonathan Strange and Mr.Norrell. I'm hooked.

liktoread · 25/01/2012 12:27

Am currently reading Marley and Me By John Grogan. I have not yet seen the film. It is a true life heart-warming tale about a great big boisterous lab and how he affects the day to day lives of the Grogan's. I think it is a veritable must for dog lovers.

DuchessofMalfi · 25/01/2012 13:01

I saw the film of Marley and Me. It was ok. I'm guessing the book is much better.

lolajane2009 · 26/01/2012 12:10

just finishing book 2 of the IOD series by Kresley Cole. read 1, 2 and 12 (lothaire, that started it all) so far.

BumgrapesofWrath · 26/01/2012 12:12

I'm reading When God Was a Rabbit - I'm really hooked.

Abcinthia · 26/01/2012 18:59

I'm reading Courtiers by Lucy Worsley and 9th Judgement by James Patterson

I'm really Courtiers. It's been a great read so far.

gailforce1 · 26/01/2012 21:34

I have nearly finished Snowdrops for MN bookclub and it is not living up to the hype! Would not recommend.
Next on my pile is Greenbanks by Dorothy Whipple which had a mention on this thread.
Did enjoy That Woman:The Life of Wallis Simpson by Anne Sebba it put across another view of the Duchess of Windsor and No Fond Return of Love by Barbara Pym, not a lot happens but beautifully written.

I also listern to audio books in the car and The Long Song and The Childrens Book were particularly good also The True History of the Kelly Gang.
