jeffry? yes thats supposed to be good, thanks www will add that to list

WideWebWitch · 02/01/2006 20:35

Althoguh I didn't find him as riveting as Bourdain. here you are though, The Man who Ate Everything was enjoyable

yoyo · 02/01/2006 21:14

A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby and then We Need to Talk About Kevin. Not sure about either but DH is usually pretty good with books for me so I will persevere.

I also have lots of book tokens but am going to hold back for a while as I have loads unread from last year.
Enid - have a look in WHS as they have some pretty good offers on and you should be able to find something that isn't full price.

Once in a House on Fire is one of my favourite books. She was featured in the Sunday Telegraph before Christmas and is now blissfully happily married.

I also loved Small Island but it did take a while to get into it. Once I got to know the characters I was unable to put it down.

I also have Kitchen Diaries to read but think I might read it monthly for inspiration.

snafu · 02/01/2006 21:20

Oh! Another vote here for David Sedaris. 'The Santaland Diaries' is the one about being an elf and it really is the kind of book you shouldn't read in public - you will snort with laughter in a most unladylike manner.

Bozza · 02/01/2006 21:21

I have read Jamie's Dinners and Trinny and Susannah already and am part way through Fast Food Nation. I am also part way through a cheapy (£1.50 from Asda) novel that I bought on Christmas Eve to help lull me to sleep despite my excitement. . I have also accidentally bought an extra copy of that Nick Hornby book that yoyo mentions so will read that. Then DH has got the latest James Patterson book so will give myself a couple of night's disturbed sleep reading those.

After that it will be back to the library for me.

Fauve · 02/01/2006 21:22

I'm reading Your Blue-Eyed Boy by Helen Dunmore, which my neice gave me - I've loved all Dunmore's books so far, and am enjoying this one, which is a bit different in style.

I'm also reading My Trade by Andrew Marr, which is surprisingly slow going - the first 100 pages are a painstaking study of the history of journalism, and I kept feeling I must be swotting for an exam. I'm onto modern-day politics and media now, though, which is more what I wanted.

NotQuiteCockney · 02/01/2006 21:41

I really liked Steingarten. More than Bourdin.

suedonim · 02/01/2006 21:43

Biography of Dirk Bogarde by John Drinkwater (or a similar name!). V good it is, too.

Posey · 02/01/2006 21:55

Just finishing something called green grass or something, in a bag full mum handed on to me. Then I can get on with some of the great books I got for Christmas.

edgetop · 02/01/2006 22:47

im reading gloria hunnifords book about her daughter caron keating.
its very sad but interesting

tamum · 02/01/2006 22:52

hoxtonchick, am v. of your MIL and her thoughtfulness. I'll be interested to know what you think of the Poisonwood Bible- I love all her others but just couldn't make it past the first hundred pages of that. I should try again really.

Santaland Diaries, that's it snafu- definitely must re-read that

hoxtonchick · 03/01/2006 09:18

she's really excelled herself hasn't she tamum! i think it was a deal from the book people actually, but still...

interesting you think that about b. kingsolver. i've read the beantrees & pigs in heaven both of which i really enjoyed (despite reading them the wrong way round, grrrr), but can't get into TPB. must try harder!

bakedpotato · 03/01/2006 09:38

Tainted Blood by Arnaldur Indridason
Can't get enough of these Scandinavian thrillers... though it's not a patch on Mankell

LadySherlockofLGJ · 03/01/2006 10:11

Just started Larry's Party.

edodgy · 03/01/2006 10:20

I've just bought Strangers by Taichi Yamada and also have Kafka on the shore by Haruki Murakami to read as well as long way round by Ewan mcgregor.

tamum · 03/01/2006 10:22

Hoxtonchick, this is getting spooky- I read the BK books in the wrong order too . Still impressed with your MIL, Book People or no!

acnebride · 03/01/2006 10:28

got The Clinton Wars out of the library just before Christmas, what a mistake, had to keep saying to dh 'oh don't mind me i'm just in a bit of a mood' when what i wanted to say was PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONE SO I CAN READ THIS BOOK. so much for happy family time.

got The Jane Austen Book Club for Christmas, quite good but not what I expected, was hoping for pure chick-lit romp but was both more and less than that.

book club very soon so must read We Need to Talk About Kevin.

clerkKent · 03/01/2006 12:32

Finished Status Anxiety just before Xmas (from dw's bookclub), now started on Never Let Me Go from the booker shortlist (pressie from dw), also have Alan Bennett (SIL).

clerkKent · 03/01/2006 12:37

Never Let Me Go is a bit creepy, but unfortunately I read a Time Out review last night which gave away some of the plot.

Does anyone else have an aversion to huge thick heavy books like Alan Bennnett's which are a pain to carry round?
