Enjoyed Sister by Rosamund Lupton and am toying with Megan Abbott's book which was mentioned here.

Would like relationships to figure as well as the tension etc.

Not too gory either.

Any suggestions??

I also recommend Out

Louise Douglas, The Secrets Between Us (if you liked Sister)

Lupton has a new one out

Mostly a bit older, but John Harvey's 11 book police detective series - Charlie Resnick - set in Nottingham - is very well written and the characterisation is excellent. Don't read the most recent, Cold in Hand, without having read others. Cutting Edge is one I particularly remember liking, and it's no 3 in the series so won't spoil the rest of the series, it may mention plot from first 2 but that's all

The Flanders Panel is a great read, it centres round art and chess.

Donna Tartt's Secret History was fantastic - but as you've read it alreday you could try The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson (1st of Millenium trilogy) or one brilliant read along the lines of We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver is The House Gun by Nadine Gordimer...do you think your list is long enough yet?

How about Susan Hill's series of Simon Serrailler thrillers? Great writing and human interest too. There are now six in the series; first one is called The various haunts of men

Agree with Restless by William Boyd.

I've just read Robert Harris' new book The Fear Index. It was very good but it's left me with lots of questions and that always makes for a good book club.

PortoTreasonAndPlot · 05/11/2011 09:46

Oh I love Robert Harris. Must take a look at that.

stickylittlefingers · 05/11/2011 11:05

this is such a good list! A lot that I've read (inevitable really if you like this kind of book), but a good number I haven't :). Am waiting for the Robert Harris to come out in paperback/arrive in the library or charity shop. Fatherland was one of my favourite books ever... And the Cicero ones were great too. How does he do it?

I second Child 44.

Also, check out Elliot Pattison's Inspector Shan books, starting with The Skull Mantra. Thee stories take place in contemporary Tibet under Chinese operations. Someone dies, and through the investigation reader learns about Tibetan people's way of thinking and culture.

Jason Goodwin writes crime novels that take place in Istanbul in the time of the Ottoman Empire, with a eunuch as detective. Barbara Nadel writes of crimes that take place in contemporary Istanbul. Both are intriguing and informative.

Sorry but Saturday is not a thriller by any definition of the word or any stretch of the imagination.

CDMforever · 05/11/2011 21:34

Wow, this list really is getting good. Thanx all.

Think I will definitely give The SEcrets Between Us a try as I loved Sister.

Out looks interesting too but a bit too gory for me!

Another vote for Restless, loved it.

Tibet under Chinese occupation. Stupid auto-correct.
