Enjoyed Sister by Rosamund Lupton and am toying with Megan Abbott's book which was mentioned here.

Would like relationships to figure as well as the tension etc.

Not too gory either.

Any suggestions??

The Exception by Christisn Jungersen would be my recommendation. It doesn't really start as a thriller as it builds up slowly, but I found it a real page turner.

The Name of the Rose? By Umberto Eco.

Also a pretty decent film, but the book's better.

The City and the City by China Mieville is fantastic and his new one, Embassytown, is supposed to be very good as well. Great writer. Don't be put off by the genre label he's getting stuck with: very talented man.

Stone's Fall, by Iain Pears, is quite fun - a Victorian mystery with mistaken identities and skulduggery on an international scale. I didn't think I'd like it from the cover but it bore reading well and has enough twists and turns and interesting characters to give plenty to talk about.

Greedygirl · 26/10/2011 21:44

Restless by William Boyd? I loved this first time around but reading that review back I can't remember half of it so it must be time to read it again! I have a shocking memory.

LaPruneDeMaTante · 26/10/2011 21:49

"An Instance of the Fingerpost" also by Iain Pears - historical thriller.
"What a Carve Up!" by Jonathan Coe is also a thriller of sorts - I mean it's a whodunit with a lot else going on (also v timely as the NHS is slowly hived off to private companies)

stickylittlefingers · 26/10/2011 21:51

I just read Spies of Warsaw, which I loved. It's set just pre WWII. It's a wonderfully evocative book, tense without being silly or gory, and I fell in love with the main character Blush.

LaPruneDeMaTante · 26/10/2011 21:53

"Case Histories" kate Atkinson v v good (subsequent Jackson Brodie ones not v good at all).

Agree with Restless, it's a total page-turner too.

LaPruneDeMaTante · 26/10/2011 21:54

Ignore me, I've confused thriller and whodunit.
Blush

Try Elizabeth/Liz Rigbey, "Summertime" or "The Hunting Season", absorbing plots and well developed characters

fivegomadindorset · 26/10/2011 22:59

Child 44, Tom Robb Smith.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/10/2011 23:04

I really enjoyed The American Boy but haven't liked any of Andrew Taylor's others thus far. Have just started An Anatomy Of Ghosts though, which looks promising.

Alone In Berlin is quite interesting, although it's probably not what you'd call a thriller.

I enjoyed The Death Instinct by Jed Rubenfeld (who also wrote The Interpretation Of Murder, which I didn't like).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/10/2011 23:05

Also The Brutal Art by Jesse Kellerman isn't bad.

CDMforever · 26/10/2011 23:11

Am reading the Death Instinct at the moment, enjoying it I think.

The Blackhouse?

doughnutty · 27/10/2011 13:36

What about Snow Falling on Cedars by David Gutterson. It's a thriller of sorts with great relationships between characters and a great setting.

One of my favourite books ever!! (therefore, too scared to choose it for my book group in case of a mauling)

fivegomadindorset · 27/10/2011 17:14

The Whaleboat House.

Second The Blackhouse

PointyBlackHat · 29/10/2011 21:07

Smilla's sense of snow?

Blackwater by Kerstin Ekman. I loved this when I read it a few years ago.

exexpat · 31/10/2011 11:05

Probably a bit late, but how about Out by Natsuo Kirino? Lots to talk about for a book group...

HeadlessLamAAARRRGHHHH · 31/10/2011 11:42

John Connolly is a writer of cracking thrillers.
