I'm going to offer Brooklyn as a suggestion but does anyone else have anything that was really enjoyed by their bookgroup?

The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Its been one our most enjoyed reads ever. Also The Reader Bernhard Schlink and The Book Thief (cant remember who wrote that one). Funnily enough i was going to choose Brookyn but ended up choosing The Help instead.

How about 'The Accidental' by Ali Smith. We read it in my book club and everyone really enjoyed it, and there's plenty to discuss!

Slubberdegullion · 24/10/2011 10:10

Madame Bovary provoked the longest book club evening to date here.

mrswoodentop · 24/10/2011 13:23

Would second The Help,we also enjoyed The Hand That First Held Mine,we have also just read Sarah's Key which went down OK

PosiesOfPoison · 08/11/2011 10:28

A means to Escape. Joanna Price. Brilliant.

I belong to a book group and we get sets of books from our local library. We get a long list to choose from and most of the titles are contemporary. It saves a lot of indecision. Its worth talking to your library to see service they can offer.

We've done Brooklyn - went down quite well. Our best discussions have been:
A Fine Balance - Rohiton Mistry(if you haven't read that one, it's absolutely wonderful, but v long)
Barbara Kingsolver's Poisonwood Bible
Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Thousand Years of Solitude
Madame Bovary
& Rebecca

JiltedJohnsJulie · 20/01/2012 18:09

The Sense of an Ending has proved our longest discussion to date.

DuchessofMalfi · 21/01/2012 17:40

A Gathering Light - Jennifer Donnelly
The Reader - Bernhard Schlink

skrumle · 21/01/2012 17:46

the help
how to be a woman
sacred hearts
a thousand splendid suns

have prompted the best discussion (and generally been read by everyone - if a book is too heavy we end up with half the folk not having finished it!)

A Dicovery of witches by Debirah Harkness, could not put it down. Great chilled holiday read

JiltedJohnsJulie · 08/02/2012 10:52

Me before you, which is on the Richard & Judy Booklist, is very good as well.

My book club are reading 'Snow Flower and the Secret Fan' by Lisa See at the moment.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 08/02/2012 18:54

happy is it any good? I've seen some reviews on Goodreads and quite fancy reading it.

CheesyWellingtons · 16/02/2012 13:09

We enjoyed The Help too.

ElmGrove · 02/03/2012 18:23

With the Olympics coming up you may want to read a very funny book - Dreams of Gold by Jonathan Chamberlain. It has been well reviewed on Amazon. Besides being funny, there are a lot of interesting - some even bizarre - characters. There's lots to talk about as it raises a lot of issues in passing - and it will appeal to teenagers too.

AJH01 · 11/03/2012 16:19

I guessing most people have read it by now, but We Need To Talk About Kevin is a great BC option. Nearly everyone has a really strong opinion on this book which makes makes for great discussion. It's really provocative.

babybouncer · 27/04/2012 11:32

Lionel Shriver's other books, especially The Post Birthday World a 'what if?' story, are also good to provoke discussions.

joanofarchitrave · 28/04/2012 22:14

We discussed The Memory of Love by Aminatta Forna for a long time.

A Fine Balance was my favourite of all the book club books I've read.

bluethimble · 28/04/2012 22:35

I've just finished reading "The Five People you meet in Heaven" by Mitch Albon and lent it to my mum, who does belong to a reading group. She thought it was great and so different that she's going to suggest it to her group.
