Jodi Picoult - Any Fans????

Hi, I've just started reading books by Jodi Picoult, and I was really reluctant at the begininng, as I normally hate these kind of 'what would you do' moral siutation books....but a friend of mine gave me 'my sisters keeper' & 'The Pact' and to my surprise I really enjoyed them, especially my sisters keeper, which I actually cried at near the end.....so my friend (who is now delighted to have won me over!) has given me a few more of her books - The Perfect Match & Nineteen minutes -

Just wondering if anyone else has read them, and are they worth starting to read, I have had a peek at perfect match and I'm not too sure about it.....do they all get a bit 'samey' after you've read a few??? On my other pile I have a book called 'Before I go to Sleep' which I have to say is drawing me in more??? Just wanted to hear any of your reviews on the above. Thanks a mill

MM

Hi there, I am a fan of Jodi Picoult but did make the mistake of reading loads one after the other and did get a weeny bit fed up of them.
My absolute favourite one, which I thouroughly recommend, was 'Plain truth' which is about a girl in an Armish community.

I have read 19 mins which I aslo enjoyed but not sure if I have read 'perfect match'

Let me know how you get on with them.... also, who is 'before I go to sleep' by? I need some new ideas too!

LikeACandleButNotQuite · 17/08/2011 21:09

Love Jodi Picoult, but prefer her earlier stuff (Pact, Plain Truth etc) rather than the newer stuff (tenth circle, 19 mins etc)

Would probably agree wth bubbles to say Plain Truth was the best one

Shanghaidiva · 18/08/2011 14:05

We need to talk about Kevin by Lionel Shriver is considerably better than 19 Minutes.

IndigoBell · 18/08/2011 14:18

I thought Salem Falls was very good.

And House Rules made me cry and cry because my boy has Aspergers too - and she really did capture it.

Also liked Picture Pefect.

sonearsofar · 18/08/2011 20:14

not here.

Had to read one for a book group (something about teenage suicide pacts). Found myself skipping longer and longer chunks just to get through it. Dire.

One of those amazingly popular writers whose appeal totally escapes me.

TheOriginalFAB · 18/08/2011 20:15

I have read 2 or 3 but am bored of the do a chapter from each person writing.

RosieBP · 18/08/2011 20:16

Another vote for Plain Truths here. Loved My Sister's Keeper too - can't bear to watch the film because have been told the ending has changed somehow. There is one where the husband is under suspicion of murder I think which I enjoyed too.

cookielove · 18/08/2011 20:18

I have read them all, and enjoyed them all she also wrote stories of a humpback whale under a different name.

I read sisters keeper first and i still cry reading it now i've re read it loads.

They can get a bit samey but i still like them

cookielove · 18/08/2011 20:19

songs of a humpback whale whoops

MrFranklyShankly · 19/08/2011 14:26

Hi again, thanks for the reviews (its still Madmammy here, i've changed my name to something more sparkly!)

Well I started Perfect Match and I dont think I'll be able to stick with it...its about a case dealing with child abuse...so I think I just need to take a break from Ms Picoult for a while and maybe come back to the other one again, nineteen minutes. I've ready 'we need to talk about Kevin' and loved it Shanghaidiva, is there much point in me reading this one??

Plain truth is actually one of her books that I want, it sounds good, so after hearing your reviews here I'll get it, Salem Falls & House Rules as well...so thanks again for the reviews, I hate when I start to read a book and half way through discover I've been wasting my time!

Bubbles 12 before I go to sleep is by SJ Watson, and it's about a woman who has lost her memory and spends each day trying to figure out how it happend....I think! Might give it a try now and come back the Picoult books after

Thanks again for the replies..

i love reading, and have read a few brilliant ones recently

no time for goodbye by Linwood Barclay

My best friends girl
Goodnight beautiful
Marshmallows for breakfast
The cupid effect
The icecream girls
by Dorothy Koomson

Things i want my daughters to know by Elizabeth Noble

SayCoolNowSayWolef · 19/08/2011 20:47

Love Jodi Picoult, read all of them. Favourite is definitely My Sister's Keeper but don't watch the film! They totally ruin it.

If you like her style OP, I also enjoy Maggie O'Farrell, Audrey Niffenegger and Emily Giffin.

Haribojoe · 21/08/2011 14:58

Plain Truth is my favourite, I agree with other posters that I'm not so keen on her more recent books.

exoticfruits · 22/08/2011 07:20

They all follow a similar formula so I stopped reading her books.

scaryfairy28 · 22/08/2011 08:53

I've read most of them but they are getting pretty samey, all turn into court room drama!

SayCoolNowSayWolef · 22/08/2011 08:55

The older ones are better. Just read Harvesting the Heart which is one of her earlier ones although it's only just been released for UK publication. Not a court room in sight!

scaryfairy28 · 22/08/2011 10:13

I've just started it after finishing the newest one. Everyone I've read seems to have had a court in it apart from...... One whose name I can't remember.

MrFranklyShankly · 22/08/2011 11:44

I've read too that some of the characters reappear in other books....well I've stuck with perfect match and it does seem be holding my interest now....got loads of her books for my birthday at the w/end so I'm going to have to like her now!!! I read 'things I want my daughters to know' too Cookielove, really liked it as well.....will check out your recommendations too SayCool, think I might have a book by Emily Giffin somewhere in my pile (which is growing by the minute!!!)

scaryfairy28 · 22/08/2011 15:47

Never noticed any characters reappearing unless there renamed.

GetOrfMoiCarbsClaire · 22/08/2011 15:50

I think they are completely dire, clunkily written and quite cynical in the manipulation of the characters to suit the designs of the plot. yes, all books to this to some extent but I think it is so obviously done in JP books. Mind you I have only read two (that was enough).

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 22/08/2011 16:18

I like Jodi Picoult but couldnt read one after the other - they get a bit same-y after a while...19 mins was really good though so def read that.

Doroty Koomson is fab, esp Ice Cream girls and I have recently discovered Diane Chamberlain who is brilliant.......I am reading her books in about 2 days as I just cant put the down. So far have read The Bay at Midnight and Midwives Confession and am not reading the Lost Daughter....all brilliant.

Since I dont have you by Louise Candlish is also a brill read!

TheOriginalFAB · 22/08/2011 16:25

I read No time to say goodbye last year and was a bit disappointed with the ending as it seemed a bit flat.

The Missing was good and I wished it had gone on longer as I would have liked to know what happened next.

A Mother's Tale was so different from anything I have ever read before.

I am currently about to start reading What the nanny saw and a Kay Reichts book.

I often buy books on the basis of magazine reviews.

BrightSkye · 23/08/2011 22:42

I like Jodi Picoult but find after reading a few of her books, they get very samey after a while. The same kinds of characters, the same kinds of plots, lots of off-topic detail and always a romance thrown in somewhere.

I have read

My Sisters Keeper - Excellent
House Rules - Excellent
Picture Perfect - Good
Nineteen Minutes - Very Good
Songs of the Humpback Whale - Terrible, didn't even finish it

I will read a few more of hers but I like to read other authors in between otherwise the "Picoult formula" gets a bit boring.

livinonaprayer · 25/08/2011 07:26

I love jodi picoult but would definitely agree with the others who have said you can't read them one after the other. Some are better than others but generally I have not been able to put them down!
Would also agree with those recommending Dorothy koomson, her books are excellent.
I also like Emily Barr but don't find many in agreement!

pamplemousserose · 25/08/2011 07:32

I like them, but get fed up if I read too many in a row. I like plain truth best.
