Jodi Picoult - Any Fans????

Hi, I've just started reading books by Jodi Picoult, and I was really reluctant at the begininng, as I normally hate these kind of 'what would you do' moral siutation books....but a friend of mine gave me 'my sisters keeper' & 'The Pact' and to my surprise I really enjoyed them, especially my sisters keeper, which I actually cried at near the end.....so my friend (who is now delighted to have won me over!) has given me a few more of her books - The Perfect Match & Nineteen minutes -

Just wondering if anyone else has read them, and are they worth starting to read, I have had a peek at perfect match and I'm not too sure about it.....do they all get a bit 'samey' after you've read a few??? On my other pile I have a book called 'Before I go to Sleep' which I have to say is drawing me in more??? Just wanted to hear any of your reviews on the above. Thanks a mill

MM

Well I've completely given up on the Perfect Match, and have now started reading The Radleys, and its just what I needed, light, funny and not a court room in sight (well yet anyway!) think I'll come back to JP after a bit of a break as I do like her stuff, think I'll get Plain Truth as that seems to be getting the best reviews...thanks for all the comments folks.

Another fan here but I like to leave a gap between each one as they are a bit samey. I only go for the courtroom ones. DD started Song of the Humpbacked Whale and thought it dire.

I think Salem Falls and Plain Truth are probably my favourites.

I disagree about the film of My Sisters Keepr - I liked both the book and the film and felt that the change in the film was justified because the end of the book is a bit contrived. She does have a tendency to go too far at the end I think. Giving nothing away except that when DD read Handle With Care recently she couldn't believe how it ended and was almost in tears.

chocoroo · 31/08/2011 20:38

Oooh, I'm a big fan. I think I've read all of them. I do think they can be bit samey though so not consecutive readers.

I loved Plain Truth, definitely the best IMO. Also enjoyed The Pact and Nineteen Minutes. I am not a fan of My Sister's Keeper though and only recently got round to reading it. My first of hers was Salem Falls.

Other stuff I've recently enjoyed....One Day and The Help but I've only recently got back into reading after the birth of DD.

Good to see all your thoughts and recommendations though.

So funny how we all differ, seems she's a bit like marmite, either love or loath her.....well I think I'm going back to reading JP again, I read the Radleys and it was DIRE, such rubbish....the More4 Bookclub review gave it such a glowing report too.....so am now reading a book by Anna Quidlan called Every Last One, a bit like Jodie Picoult, its about a family where something tragic happens....have to say I'm hooked on it so maybe its a phase I'm going through, probably because I can relate to a lot of the things going on with kids and hubby IYKWIM......I've read the help too Chocoroo and I loved it, such good book, very funny and sad too...will check out Salem Falls, recently purchased Plain Truth so looking forward to starting that...I have to say I love books that leave me tears!

porcamiseria · 02/09/2011 11:20

i hate her book, dont know why, but hate hate hate

MrFranklyShankly · 02/09/2011 15:30

c'mon porcamiseria, tell us how you really feel!!!! which book in particular is it that you hate?! Or just all of them!!!

rookiemater · 02/09/2011 15:33

I used to like her but they all follow the same plot line so predictable, apart from The Humpbacked Whale which I think was her first novel but released fairly recently, I liked that because it was a bit different.

OddBoots · 02/09/2011 15:38

I've read one but I can't remember the title, can anyone here help remind me please? It starts with a woman being found in a churchyard having had a head injury and lost her memory.

MrsDBouquetVAMOSRAFA · 02/09/2011 15:49

OddBoots

The book you read was Picture Perfect. Smile

I have read most of Jodi's books, I have found most of them enjoyable, if not a little 'samey' as others say.

I loved Since I Don't Have You, by Louise Candlish, but it gave me nightmares about my DD, let's just say I was very relieved when she turned 7 this year. Blush

Would also second anything by Dorothy Koomson.

OddBoots · 02/09/2011 15:57

Thank you very much MrsDBouquet :)

only read one, something about a faith healer and is he a fraud or something... thought it was sentimental tripe - sorry Jodi and your fans

horseyrider · 21/09/2011 19:55

I've just started on "Nineteen minutes" today. Really enjoying it so far. This is my first Jodi Picoult and I've got about seven of them (grin).

CestTout · 21/09/2011 20:12

Also read a lot but never one after the other, favourite was Plain Truth. Agree about Dorothy Koomson recently finished Goodnight Beautiful which involved sobbing on a ryanair flight of all places!

StopRainingPlease · 21/09/2011 20:23

I've read My Sister's Keeper, the Tenth Circle and something about a tennis star, and maybe another one about a car crash and one about an airline pilot (though maybe I'm confusing those with another writer). I found the 10th circle very annoying due to the girl lying all the way through about such a serious issue. Other than that I enjoyed them but got very fed up of her writing style - "What if he died? What if he didn't?" "What if her brother was the murderer? What if he wasn't?"

CurlyCasper · 21/09/2011 20:29

Agree Plain Truth is the best - but it was my first JP. I really liked 10th Circle because it was a bit different (and because I read it on the beach on honeymoon!). But I have struggled to get into recent ones, and did tire with the formulaic approach. I was also disappointed with the inaccurate cultural references in Mercy, after really enjoying learning about specific cultures in other JP novels I'd read. It made me start to doubt her research.

I have a couple sitting on my bookshelf untouched.

Penelope1980 · 02/10/2011 07:51

I try not to read more than one a year - I am not a massive fan, but still enjoy them enough if I space them out like that or else they do feel the same and the formula bugs me if I read two too close together. I do think they have gotten worse though, but maybe that's just my view as I read Plain Truth and the Pact first and really liked them without being aware of the formula at that stage.

VeryStressedMum · 27/10/2011 20:16

I like Jodi Picoult a lot.

kslatts · 27/10/2011 21:11

I love Jodi Picoult, loved My Sister's Keeper and The Pact. I agree with others that it's best not to reas the one after the other, I always read a couple of other books in between.

flakemum · 27/10/2011 21:18

Love reading Picoult another vote for plain truth here too. Also been reading few of the D Chamberlin too enjoyed bay at midnight and midwifes confession. Now reading forgotten garden by Kate Morton great so far.
