I just read a few chapters of this book and it has me upset and angry for suzie who does not seem all that happy in heaven watching her destroyed family and her killer walking around. Tell me it gets more hopeful. I am not enjoying reading it because it is making me so mad and sad for her. I know alot on this thread have read it, dare I read on???? What are your thoughts on this book?

it gets better. i didn't think i'd like it but i carried on past the first few chapters. certainly it gets less stressful to read, not more.

I liked it. But then I don't think the function of reading is necessarily to give you the warm and fuzzies.

I liked the book but cried on the bus and had to pretend to have an eyelash or something.

bundle · 17/11/2005 15:33

haven't read it as FIL described it at mawkish and I value his opinion. definitely don't have to get fuzzies out of a book: We Need to Talk About Kevin one of the best I've read this year (about fictional American school massacre) and provoked v stimulating discussion at my book group.

Jackstini · 17/11/2005 15:34

I have read it and the second half is certainly better than the first. If you give up now you won't see how she copes with things later....!

i found it a bit cheesy, but i would rather read a cheesy account of such a grim subject than a realist account (i.e. compared to "Henry - portrait of a serial killer" - a grimly realist film on a similar topic which gave me nightmares)

JessicaandRebeccasmummy · 17/11/2005 15:37

i was griped by it, but if u arent enjoying it dont continue.

christie1 · 17/11/2005 15:55

thanks, good variety of opinions. I don't mind reading darker subjects but this one is bothering me (have daughters) so I think I will put it aside as it doesn't seem worth the emotional investment.

i have read it and thought it 3was really good!

crumpet · 17/11/2005 16:47

I didn't think it was worth the bother. Concidentally (in that the book is about someone who has just died) very soon after I read 5 people you meet in heaven, which was so much better written. I loved it.

Arabica · 17/11/2005 19:42

I felt manipulated by it, but I quite like that in a book sometimes; thought the ending was a bit weak, though, so there's one reason not to finish it.

Avalon · 17/11/2005 19:50

I decided not to read this book. A friend of mine did read it and wished she hadn't.

beautiful and moving book although a challenging read due to ghastly attack - am happy I read this and will re-read in future , I found it life affirming.

Rhubarb · 17/11/2005 21:19

I think I read this, but now I've forgotten what the plot was about. Outstanding books stay in my head, mediocre books fade away to make room for new ones. So I guess that makes Lovely Bones a mediocre read by my standards!

albosmum · 17/11/2005 21:37

worth finishing but a rubbish ending agree with bundle about "talk about kevin" best book this year

MrsSpoon · 17/11/2005 23:45

IMO Lovely Bones was pants.

My actual name is christine but everyone calls me christie and when I signed up I assumed there already was a christie so I signed as christie1 (not very original I know), nice to meet the other christie.

Well I was going to say don't start unless you think you can really handle it. I cried all the way through and wished I'd never started it but you have to read it to the end or it will haunt you, you've got to have closure like the characters. For me it firmed up the decision not to go near books like this, I like them shallow and funny.

triceratops · 19/11/2005 16:04

mawkish is a good way to describe it. it does get more cheerful but I found the ending trite.

Chandra · 19/11/2005 16:04

I found the book rather bad to be honest but I continued reading just to see if it will improve, in answer to your original post, it will get more hopeful for Suzie but definitively not for the quality of the book. Ridiculously teenage cheap film like ending IMO.
