When I am fed up, tired or just need something non-challenging, I comfort read books that I know may be nonsense, but make me feel good. My favourites are anything by Elinor M Brent-Dyer, LM Alcott, Terry Pratchett or Lord of the Rings. Anyone else have comfort books?

Chalet School and Discworld here too. Also Jane Austen, Rudyard Kipling, Bill Bryson, anything I can nick off my sisters bookshelves.

SardineQueen · 28/03/2011 14:08

PG Wodehouse is my top cheerer-upper
Also Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams

SardineQueen · 28/03/2011 14:10

I don't think they're nonsense though!

LawrieMarlow · 28/03/2011 14:12

Chalet School here too!

Peter Hamilton and Sophia Kinsella as well - limited selection of books here :(

BoattoBolivia · 28/03/2011 14:17

Oooh, forgot Douglas Adams! Looks like we need a Chalet School addicts support thread!

SnapFrakkleAndPop · 28/03/2011 14:25

Nah there's a whole forum for that.

BoattoBolivia · 28/03/2011 14:52

Ok Snap, fair point! Always steered clear of those as I know I would get totally addicted!

OP posts:
SnapFrakkleAndPop · 28/03/2011 15:02

What's the problem being addicted?! There's some seriously good fanfic on there though - a couple of people have even had fill ins published. It's like a whole world of extra CS comfort reading.

Carrotsandcelery · 28/03/2011 15:05

I don't think they are rubbish but when I just want to relax into a book the James Herriot ones always do the trick for me and take me right back to my childhood. Grin

BoattoBolivia · 28/03/2011 15:08

Iknow none of them are nonsense, but other people often don't understand me! Obviously on here, amongst friends, ignore the nonsense comment!

Elizabeth Jane Howard's Cazalet Chronicles

LawrieMarlow · 28/03/2011 16:11

Why is there a tube of canesten here?

BoattoBolivia · 28/03/2011 17:06

I have no idea, but if you stick it in advanced search, it seems to be spreading itself around everywhere!!!

Was wondering about the thrush....

I read Bridget Jones, early Marian Keyes, Stuart Maconie and Bill Bryson.

Also oddly, gory homicides. Slaughter/Kava/Cornwell etc.

FreeButtonBee · 28/03/2011 17:10

Georgette Heyer are my go-to re-read. I love them. I now restrict myself to buying new ones for when I go on holiday. I will be really sad when I have read them all. I also made DH move them to the front row of the bookshelves for easier access when I'm sad/unwell/down/in the mood for a bit of Regency fluff

quirrelquarrel · 28/03/2011 18:26

Yay for Enid Blyton, Chalet School, Trebizon, Drina books, Judy Blume...'comfort reads' since I was young, still hold the same for me now.

Otherwise, I like maps.
:)

NorthernGobshite · 28/03/2011 18:30

Armistead Maupin and Kate Atkinson are always my go to authors.

LunarRose · 28/03/2011 18:35

Twilight series Blush

Batteryhuman · 28/03/2011 18:48

Crime novels/thrillers, preferably formula ones where you pretty much know how it is going to pan out like the Jack Reacher ones or Dick Francis.

For nostalgia I can't beat re-reading Nevil Shute, A Town Like Alice or In the Wet.

mumtoxii · 28/03/2011 19:30

All the Little House on the Prairie books for me!!
