what lovely pictures to go with the stories, my two boys love her books. I have just looked on amazon and am pleased to see that she has written lots and lots of stories, if you have read any, which ones can you recommend?

Dogger is one of my all time favourites.

It turns out ok in the end though!!!

I love dogger too.
There are two Alfie and Annie Rose Sotry books called something like 'Stories for Outdoors' and then 'Stories for Indoors'.

Angel May is a cracker too. Especially around Christmas. Or you could by 'Tales from Trotter Street' which includes Angel May and three other great ones.

There's one called The Snow Lady, which is set at christmas.
The Birthday Surprise. The Trouble with Jack.

There are so many. She has written a few for older kids too like 'Abel's Moon'

We love Shirley Hughs. Can you tell.

tiredemma · 27/10/2005 20:55

Have you seen the big handback compendium? It's got lots of the best stories in it and covers most ages, really. Hmm, must get it back out

Hulababy · 27/10/2005 21:00

Love Shirley Hughes books They are so lovely.

tamum · 27/10/2005 21:01

Here it is . The version of Dogger doesn't have quite as many pictures but it's almost worth getting anyway just to get a taste of the whole range

tiredemma · 27/10/2005 21:04

thanks tamum. that has a few of her stories in i take it?

tamum · 27/10/2005 21:08

Yes, loads and loads. I think most of the ones that spidermama mentioned, and lots more. It's really worth getting- if you can get to a bookshop you could have a flick through and then buy it on Amazon.

flamebat · 27/10/2005 21:12

Added to the wishlist for DD for christmas!

Wordsmith · 27/10/2005 21:14

I saw the title of this thread and assumed my mum must have joined mumsnet! She loves Dogger and has just bought it for DS1 (5). She used to read it to her kids (schoolkids - she was a teacher) in the 70's.

Can't remember it myself but it is lovely.

JanH · 27/10/2005 21:27

The Lucy and Tom books are very sweet and old-fashioned - Lucy & Tom's Christmas, Lucy & Tom Go to School etc - several on Amazon.

Who knew that Shirley Hughes is the daughter of TJ Hughes?

JanH · 27/10/2005 21:30

I can't read Dogger either btw - it's not the losing so much as the ending

I just searched on amazon for her and was amazed at all her books I've never heard of!

moondog · 27/10/2005 21:32

Love her.So tender and full of humour.

We read her in Welsh.

flamebat · 27/10/2005 21:32

Not Shirley Hughes... but how about Molly Brett? Lovely pictures again, and The Forgotten Bear has got such a nice story.

JanH · 27/10/2005 21:32

And there is one where a child goes to a birthday party which takes place in somebody's back garden and she doesn't know anybody - which one is that, please?

gingerbear · 27/10/2005 21:33

Alfie and Annie-Rose are big hits with my DD. She loves when Alfie locks himself in, when he buys new boots, goes to a party and when he is a pageboy at Lynn's wedding.

RottenRhubarbWitch · 27/10/2005 21:34

LOVE HER LOVE HER! As do both my kids from 5 to 22 months, she is the favourite with them both!

moondog · 27/10/2005 21:34

I know it well Jan! Don't know what it's called exactly in English though.

alittlebitscary · 27/10/2005 21:35

kate100 · 27/10/2005 21:40

I LOVE Shirley Hughes!!! I've read her in all my classes and the children have loved them. Now reading them to ds1. He had the anthology for his christening and it's great, not as many pictures, but very good value. I love dogger, but my favourtie is Alfie Gets in First.

JanH · 27/10/2005 21:41

Oh it's Alfie who goes to the party? Wonder why I thought it was a girl!
