Which one please? I'm really hoping this can be a new love of mine, I fancy something genuinely enjoyable...

Thanks

I adore Georgette Heyer, its been my secret vice for years.

I love Lord Damerel, the Duke of Avon, The Marquis of Vidal, Sir Anthony, Max Ravenscar, the Earl of Worth, Sir Richard Wyndham, the Duke of Salford etc etc etc.

I now have my teenage daughter hooked on them as well, which is just such a pleasure to observe her reading and enjoying them. Plus it means her and I can have really 'sad' discussions about the plots/hero/heroine/language in depth, because most of my friends wouldn't even consider reading such 'chick lit'.

Mrs Danverclone
Ah, Sir Anthony - the thinking mumsnetter's crumpet (sadly I realise I am too old for the wonderful Dominic Marquis of Vidal....) and Lord Damerel...

Who would you all have as actors if the BBC were to take the plunge and televise any of these gems?

Alan Rickman as Damerel?
Richard Armitage (ok showing a preference here) as Vidal
Not sure who would do the lovely Sir Anthony justice. But I am sure David Tennant would do a fantastic Robin from the Masqueraders....

Wish I had the ear of the DG of the BBC and they had a budget for this.

Sigh.

LadyDamerel · 26/01/2011 20:01

No, no no, Alan Rickman is too mumbly to be Damerel. Richard Armitage is the only man I'd accept for the role [bgrin]. He isn't wicked enough to be Vidal, imo.

We were musing over this last night on one of the Regency threads in Chat.

James Purefoy was suggested but can't remember which hero.

Unfortunately Colin Firth will always be Darcy for me because he'd fit the bill for several of GH's heroes.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 26/01/2011 20:41

On the Georgette Heyer thread I started a couple of months ago someone posted that they will never be dramatized as GH specified in her will they they couldn't be - something to do with a dramatisation where she didn't approve of the casting.

Not sure how long such a ban would last after her death. Probably too long for us lot!

SilverBrumby · 26/01/2011 21:20

Thanks BBIWA - that's interesting and a shame....
Lady D - will pop over to Chat now to see who you have all suggested!!!!Smile

LadyDamerel · 26/01/2011 21:23

One here, Brumby

then there's a link to another within it!

SilverBrumby · 26/01/2011 21:52

Thanks Lady D - I have just read it - it's great. Hopefully fellow fans from the BBC are lurking and the commissioning of suggested mini series is merely a season or two away.....
We can live in hope!
I read a very interesting biography of GH by Jane Aitken Hodge year ago- it showed how meticulous her research into the details was.
There is also room I am sure for a (loving) and fan led hypotheses as to who of the heroines lived happily ever after....I loved hearing what had happened to Mary Challoner and Vidal when they appeared as older in, I think, An Infamous Army (though wish GH hadn't let Mary become stout!).....
What a great thread!

You are so right, David Tennant as Robin.

I always think of Rufus Sewell as Miles Calverleigh.
Benedict Cumberbatch ( in Sherlock, all haughty and pasty looking) as Lord Avon.
Richard Armitage as Damarel, Hugo, Vidal, Earl of Worth, Charles Rivenhall, Robert Beaumaris etc
He just needs a few different wigs and it works for me.

mrsshackleton · 27/01/2011 13:21

I tried one the other day and gave up after a page

Shall I give it another go? Love chick lit so I am sure it is meant to be but I just tried the wrong one at the wrong time

Sprig Muslin is also good fun

SilverBrumby · 29/01/2011 09:10

Mrs Shackleton
Please persevere. It depends which one you tried. The classic faves mentioned here are all good though personally I have gone off Regency Buck.
You can't go wrong with:

These Old Shades
Devil's Cub
Arabella
Frederica
The Grand Sophy
Faro's Daughter
The Convenient Marriage
False Colours
The Masqueraders
Slyvester
Venetia
The Talisman Ring

To my surprise I have gone off Lady of Quality which I once loved.
Hope it gets better.

SilverBrumby · 29/01/2011 09:13

PS
Mrs Danverlove
BC as Avon - inspired! I couldn't think of who should play him but your idea is fab!
It's time BC donned some breaches!

GrannyMo · 29/01/2011 13:46

DH got some Georgette Heyer books for me and I did try reading them. Not really me but then it would be an awfully boring world if we all liked the same thing.

Best wishes to all book fans, whatever you read. :)
