For me I think it is The Passage -although I am still reading it.
Another favourite was The Help.

Liked the first three quarters of The Help a lot but then thought it got really stupid.

Finally read The Woman In White and loved it.

I liked White Tiger and Mr Pip.

Oh I read and loved this.

Will try and remember what else!

I have also read a lot of crap and a lot of mediocre stuff. Eg: loathed American Wife.

comewhinewithme · 18/12/2010 18:41

Oh White Tiger looks good will add that to my wishlist.

I did think the whole secret about the pie in The Help was very silly. But apart from that a good read.

The pie thing, the boyfriend thing (irrelevant and boring) and the ending all annoyed me.

purpleduck · 18/12/2010 18:46

I loved The Help
and just read The Red Tent - very good

Loved 'The Book of Negroes'
Enjoyed 'The Help'
Liked 'Room'(mostly)
Adored 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society'

sparklyjewlz · 19/12/2010 07:06

'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society' was a totally enjoyable read!
I also liked "One Day".

LostArt · 19/12/2010 15:44

I liked 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society' and 'White Tiger' too. I also enjoyed Paul Tordays 'Salmon Fishing in the Yemen' and 'Girl on the Landing'.

But my favourite read this year was 'Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox'.

I keep picking up 'The Help', but worry it may be a bit too Oprah for me.

sparklyjewlz · 19/12/2010 21:55

LostArt: I just finished Esme Lennox and I loved it! We must have similar tastes so I will look at your other recommends too.

VivaLeBeaver · 19/12/2010 21:58

Was going to say The Passage as well.

Loved The Help and One Day.

MurkyTurkey · 20/12/2010 14:14

My favorite read all year was I shall wear Midnight by Terry Pratchett. Yep, I know its for kids but its still great book.

I am also enjoying the true blood books far more than I should. Xmas Blush

Longstocking2 · 20/12/2010 14:56

Blackwater Lightship by Colm Toibin.

best book I've read in a long time.

Now reading 'the master' by the same author -awesomely brilliant

solongandthanksfor · 21/12/2010 18:04

The Children's Book by AS Byatt - loved it, so rich & compelling.

Have not heard of this Guernsey Literary & Potato Pie book at all - intriguing title.

allnightlong · 22/12/2010 21:32

Another for The Childrens Book, I loved it, so rich and layered loved the vast list of characters and plots within plots.

allnightlong · 22/12/2010 21:33

Actually might add The Passage to that too and I'm only half way through.

CDMforever · 22/12/2010 22:29

All very interesting, amongst others am going to read The Help and The Childrens' Book for my book group. All sounds good. Liked One Day BTW.

lalalonglegs · 22/12/2010 22:30

Loved "The Slap" [controversial]

Wheelybug · 22/12/2010 22:35

One of the first books I read this year was Molok'ai by ALan Brennert. Was fantastic. Not much has come close - The Help was close.

neolara · 22/12/2010 22:39

One Day.

PercyPigPie · 22/12/2010 22:47

I finished The Help yesterday and was devestated by the ending (also thought 'poo-pie' was a bit silly though.

tethersjinglebellend · 22/12/2010 22:49

Man's search for meaning by Viktor Frankl.

LutyensInTinsel · 22/12/2010 23:30

The Uncommon Reader. It was a great feel-good book and made me laugh out loud several times.

Woman In Black is a very close second. Very atmospheric, very creepy. I couldn't put it down even though I had to prop my eyelids open with matchsticks!

Hmm..what else? Great Gatsby (a re-read), and Heartstone...but then I'm a diehard Shardlake fan Xmas Grin

OMaLittle · 22/12/2010 23:38

Ooh I've read lots this year... but can I remember any?

Then We Came To The End - Joshua Ferris
Cancer Ward - Soltzenitsyn
Chronic City - Jonathan Lethem
Behind the Scenes at the Museum - Kate Atkinson
Wise Children - Angela Carter

ALL brilliant. There are definitely more, my subconscious will reunite me with the memories overnight.

Penelope1980 · 23/12/2010 07:29

Mine would be:

  • Moonstone by Wilkie Collins
  • The Help
  • The Passage
  • The Lee Child released earlier in the year set in New York (can't remember the name)
biryani · 23/12/2010 17:43

The Slap (sorry can't spell the author). Reviews were mediocre, but I couldn't put it down.
