I need a book or film to utterly sweep me away in romance

I want to swoon over the hero and get completely lost in a desparately romantic book or film.

What can you recommend?

OP posts:

If you have a literary turn you could try "Possession" by A S Byatt (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Possession_(novel) here]] but avoid the film at all costs as it's pretty bad.

Or some Jane Austen? I like Persuasion...

For a film which is romantic and a real "feel good" I love Don Juan De Marco (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Juan_de_Marco here]] or Moulin Rouge if you like it really sappy (I love it but it's hardly to everyone's taste).

I suspect these choices reveal more about me than any of my posts ever have!!

BelleDameSansMerci · 29/08/2010 15:46

What the hell is going on with my links?

Sorry about that. They shoud be:

Possession - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Possession_(novel)

Don Juan de Marco - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Juan_de_Marco

Tippychoocks · 29/08/2010 15:48

Pride and Prejudice every time.

I await other posts with interest cos I like a bit of romance without the Bills and Moony aspect or lots of modern nonsense about Jimmy Choos and Rabbits.

Georgette Heyer is supposed to be the business but I never see any in the library. Maybe that's a good sign and all the old ladies are swooning over them?

onimolap · 29/08/2010 15:52

I love Georgette Heyer books - both the murders and the romances. Devil's Cub is my favourite.

BelleDameSansMerci · 29/08/2010 15:59

I think a lot of Heyer books are out of print (may be wrong about that). I love The Peacock Fan...

LadyPeterWimsey · 29/08/2010 15:59

Georgette Heyer is in fact the business. And funny as well, which is a wonderful thing if you've ever read any M & B ghastly melodrama.

tillyfernackerpants · 29/08/2010 16:21

My go-to book for moments like this is Daphne Du Maurier's Frenchman's Creek, in fact might just go and read it again now Grin

CornishKK · 29/08/2010 16:31

And if Daphne floats your boat then try the King's General, although Frenchman's Creek is my favourite.

Or how about The Far Pavilions by MM Kaye?

IsItMeOr · 29/08/2010 16:37

BelleDame - was just coming on to suggest Possession Grin.

The Pride and Prejudice mini-series with Colin Firth [swoon].

There's loads of Georgette Heyer on Amazon, so think it might be back in print. IIRC national treasure Stephen Fry enjoys her books, although I've not tried them. Sounds like I should.

A bit less classy, but I love The Wedding Singer.

amateurmum · 29/08/2010 16:44

I capture the castle by Dodie Smith - so romantic and nostalgic.

BelleDameSansMerci · 29/08/2010 16:52

IsItMeOr, I love The Wedding Singer too... And 50 First Dates. Grin

CornishKK have you also read Shadow Of The Moon by MM Kaye? It's one of my favourite books although I don't think it's technically as good as The Far Pavilions.

IsItMeOr · 29/08/2010 19:42

Haha, I also like 50 First Dates, but was a bit shy of admitting it Grin.

LittleCheesyPineappleOne · 29/08/2010 19:44

Mariana by Monica Dickens

SparklyJules · 29/08/2010 19:46

I got caught up in An Officer And A Gentleman last night! HOW gorgeous was Richard Gere in 1982? swoons

Tillyscoutsmum · 29/08/2010 19:48

Frenchman's Creek is my romantic classic.

The Notebook is my modern favourite and is in fact, one of the few where I actually prefer the film to the book. It is a romantic sob fest

IsItMeOr · 29/08/2010 19:57

Ooh, just spotted that The Wedding Singer is on GOLD at 9pm!

And yes, An Officer And A Gentleman is v. romantic.

Notebook film was a bit meh for me. Not sure if I was missing something.

Time Traveller's Wife is romantic, although in a grown up way.

CornishKK · 29/08/2010 22:13

BelleDame I've just ordered Shadow of the Moon from Amazon, perfect timing for my holiday. Thank you.

BelleDameSansMerci · 29/08/2010 22:52

Cornish, I really hope you like it. It's more obviously romantic than Far Pavilions but I love it.

CornishKK · 29/08/2010 22:54

I'm sure I will, a rainy week in the Lake District needs obvious romance. Smile

BelleDameSansMerci · 29/08/2010 22:56

Are you going away this week? I've got a rainy week "glamping" in North Yorkshire ahead of me...

LauraNorder · 29/08/2010 22:57

Just watched the Wedding Singer - it was great! Grin

ZZMum · 29/08/2010 23:00

just read "the last letter from your lover" -totally gorgeous romance which I found really engaging despite nornally hating this sort of thing

CornishKK · 29/08/2010 23:24

Belle, we're away in two weeks time, self catering which means doing the same shit but in slightly more inconvenient surroundings Grin

You'll definitely need romance for glamping too, Gone With the Wind or The Thorn Birds. Or something more Northern with miners or farmers?

BTW, we did a week in Nunnington on July and it was lovely.

BelleDameSansMerci · 30/08/2010 20:16

I hope you have a fantastic time. I share your view on self catering Grin

Fortune's Rock (s?) Anita Shreve.
Love this!
