Has anyone who already likes Steven king read the dome? I am excited by the blurb, but queues in smiths today put me off....

I liked duma key, but thought the end was a little bit lame. i think i enjoyed the cell, but have since heard that it was also lame! maybe i should give the dark tower another go too.....have ordered my paperback bath copy of under the dome on amazon. if it's half as good as the stand i'll be happy.

OP I bought Under the Dome a couple of weeks ago in Waterstones and it was half price - £4, bargain! Not sure if it is still on offer though.

Went to buy the Bachman books (after reading the mumsnet thread about IT), loved the Long Walk!

Am not very far into Under the Dome but am enjoying it so far. My fave SK classics are probably Cujo, Rose Madder, It, Desperation.... so so many!

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 21/07/2010 20:54

Just finished Under the Dome (like quality says, slightly distracted by the Simpsons movie thing) and thought it was pretty good.

Liked the setup and characters, I just thought that the, er, major event that happens a few chapters from the end was a bit unnecessary.
He had a good psychological us-and-them thing going on, and I felt that the Major Event Thing was over-egging the pudding a bit.

Quality · 21/07/2010 21:08

Heathen, do you mean the Event or the Reason? the first I liked, the second not so much. maybe a new thread needed?

stainesmassif · 21/07/2010 21:27

yes, please no spoilers, i'm far too excited!
I still think about the long walk, quite often, and that's another i don't think i've read since teenage years. have just remembered - hearts in atlantis made me cry!

do you think i need to watch the simpsons movie to fully appreciate under the dome?

OP posts:
ILovePonyo · 21/07/2010 21:31

I'd say no to watching the Simpsons film! It might spoil the book as I do keep thinking of the Simpsons every now and then reading Under the Dome. Watch it after

I also read the Running Man and feel my dp ruined it for me somewhat by telling me it was made into a film with Arnold Schwartzneger (however you spell it in). The image of Arnie on the run instead of the person I had made up whilst reading really ruined for me

ShirleyKnot · 21/07/2010 21:41

Proper laughing at whether you should watch The Simpson in conjunction with reading the Dome. ahahah

Oh Yeah, Hearts in Atlantis was sad. oh oh oh, what about that one where the old guy, Ralph could suddenly see aura's; that was good, damn it what was it called again?

Quality · 21/07/2010 21:48

NO, don't watch the simpsons!
Shirley, Insomnia is that one.

ShirleyKnot · 21/07/2010 21:49

Oooh, yeah Insomnia, I liked that one.

(can anyone detect a running theme here?)

stainesmassif · 21/07/2010 21:55

maybe we should organise a mini quiz for Quality and Shirley on some of the more obscure aspects of Steven's canon of work?

eg, what's the name of the indian hitman who goes after the protagonists of firestarter? fastest finger wins Mumsnet Stephen King ultimate fan 2010.

Sidge · 21/07/2010 21:56

Oh I liked Under the Dome!!

I love Stephen King's books (well most of them).

Have just got Duma Key from the library, about to start that.

My favourites are:

The Long Walk
Misery
Carrie
Dead Zone
Firestarter
The Langoliers
Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption
The Green Mile
Pet Sematary (scared the chuff out of me)

BelligerentGhoul · 21/07/2010 21:58

I loved Insomnia. Bag Of Bones was good too - is that the one with the bit with the bath and child, that really freaked me out for ages after reading it?

I HATED Cell.

Quality · 21/07/2010 22:01

john rain something...um

Quality · 21/07/2010 22:02

stainesmassif · 21/07/2010 22:04

Congraaaaaatulations Quality! i am impressed.

don't think i've read bag of bones.

have just re read the synopsis of the long walk on wiki. why did i do that??!

OP posts:
Quality · 21/07/2010 22:14

Long walk makes me soooooooooooooooooob

stainesmassif · 22/07/2010 07:25

Well I've brought wizard and glass with me to read on the train. It had better not make me cry!

stripeyknickersspottysocks · 22/07/2010 08:01

I've never read a SK book in my life. I've seen the films of It and Carrie.

Can anyone recommend what would be a good book of his to read for the first one?

stainesmassif · 22/07/2010 08:10

I would suggest the collected novellas - different seasons? Good intro to different styles. Tho not his usual horror. Or the shining to start, you can't go wrong.

OP posts:
Quality · 22/07/2010 08:24

staines. yeah. good luck with that

ShirleyKnot · 22/07/2010 09:02

stripey - I'd start with Dead Zone.

Loved Bag of Bones as well.

staines - enjoy W&G,

You are a bunch of pussies. I've never cried at any SK books (apart from Cujo, Pet Semetary and that was because I was a WUSS)

stainesmassif · 22/07/2010 11:33

I just don't know if I'm going to be able to handle it. Am pregnant. Dizzee rascal in concert made me cry the other day. WTF?

OP posts:
ShirleyKnot · 22/07/2010 11:35

Dizzee Rascal has that effect on music lovers.

stainesmassif · 22/07/2010 11:43

it was emotional, man.

OP posts:
ShirleyKnot · 22/07/2010 12:03

Was it the "Some people think I'm bonkers" bit?

Poor the Dizzee
