Has anyone who already likes Steven king read the dome? I am excited by the blurb, but queues in smiths today put me off....

I hoped that it looked stand-esque. I will just have to get it on the way home, I really can't wait now.

Oh yes, it's very good.*

(Is it new out in paperback then?)

*I have loved every single SK book so my views are not to be taken particularly seriously.

Icantbelieveitsnotbitter · 21/07/2010 13:29

Can't wait to start it - bought it for my holiday (actually bought 8 books and hoping that's going to be enough but may be deluding myself and I have 4 children, including a 9 month old baby !!)

ShirleyKnot · 21/07/2010 13:33

It's not as good as The Stand though

Quality · 21/07/2010 13:41

Is this 'Under the Dome' new in paperback, cos I've read it and am confused

It's good, and the ending wasn;t what I was expecting at all as well!

BUT have you seen the SImpsons Movie? DD1 was obsessed with it whiel I was reading the book and it got a leetle confusing

stainesmassif · 21/07/2010 13:43

Nooooo! Don't say that, Shirley, I was so excited. How about needful things? Or the tommyknockers? Did you like them? I have to establish a benchmark here!

I also have to admit that I gave up on the dark tower series because I was afraid it would make me cry!

OP posts:
stainesmassif · 21/07/2010 13:47

Sorry - hardback books are effectively invisible to me...too heavy and can't read them in the bath!

OP posts:
Quality · 21/07/2010 13:49

I agree not as good as the Stand, or Tommyknockers, probably better than Needful things and IT. Better than Cell for sure.

To me, the ending didn't seem to match the rest of the book, it was good, but really, um, unexpected. (trying to think of right word)

Quality · 21/07/2010 13:49

Ah but staines, I got it from teh library months ago....for free, no queues....

ShirleyKnot · 21/07/2010 13:50

To repeat: I HAVE LOVED EVERY SINGLE SK BOOK EVER EVER EVER (except Danse Macabre, which I haven't read)

The only Stephen King book I have been unable to re-read was Gerald's Game. (I've not read Cujo since having children either though )

So, The Dome is...TommyKnocker-ISH I suppose. V character lead. It is good - I like the monstrosity of the main "villains"

(Nothing will ever be as good as The Stand. It is his best work)

Dark Tower series? How far did you get?

Quality - hahaha!

stainesmassif · 21/07/2010 13:56

Erm, i think it got to the point that Roland was a young man with his best friends and was falling in love..... I thought 'i know where this is going' and bailed! Agreed, I could not read cujo now. Quality - bath reading though!

ShirleyKnot · 21/07/2010 13:59

Wizard and Glass then, yeah, that was a bit rough...

I enjoyed the whole series though.

Quality · 21/07/2010 14:11

Oh I never read books I haven't read before in teh bath, I have a shelf in teh spare room of trash books, chick lit and short stories specially for bath reading I am that sad.
New books I have been waiting for get the armchair I have had since I was 5 downstairs with some hot choc and dvds for dds.
Rereads are read anywhere, hence the reason I had to apologise for tomato splatters on the cover of a library book after I read it while cooking bolognese

ShirleyKnot · 21/07/2010 14:12

I don't like reading in the bath.

There, I said it.

Quality · 21/07/2010 14:14

Oh yeah, susan was it? I skip that bit.

I still have to say oen of my favourite SK's was The Eye of The Dragon. Incomparable to any other imo. Oh, and Talisman makes me weep now.

can't reread Cujo or Pet Semetary since having children.

ComeWhineWithMe · 21/07/2010 14:15

I am reading Desperation by him ATM and I just don't know if I like it or now .

My favourites are The Stand and IT.

ComeWhineWithMe · 21/07/2010 14:16

If I like it or not .

ShirleyKnot · 21/07/2010 14:26

hmm - CWWM, good point, Desperation and The Regulators were a bit...weird.

Desperation was very very dark. Didn't it just get straight into the horribleness from the first chapter?

Quality · 21/07/2010 14:27

yes, desperation, I read it backwards as I read Regulators first (which is a Bachman book with the same characters and similarish theme) so I really enjoyed it!

ComeWhineWithMe · 21/07/2010 15:57

It does get into the violence straight away but tis all very odd.

Am going to add Under the dome to my list, thanks OP.

stainesmassif · 21/07/2010 19:44

ooh, i'm enjoying this thread - i bet i kill it..Quality - i love your hieararchy of reading material. i show my books very little respect. and am shocked that you could just miss a bit out! i have never considered that as an option!
shirley my favourites were (though i haven't re read) the stand, the dead zone, firestarter, the shining, and it. i know that i've read the talisman, but i was a teenager and that is two decades ago! maybe i'll have to revisit everything.

BelligerentGhoul · 21/07/2010 19:44

Under The Dome was okay but not a patch on The Stand. I just thought he tried to cover too many characters and then got a bit casual about getting rid of them. Didn't much like the 'reason' behind the dome.

The Dark tower series is my absolute favourite - I so fancy Roland. And it does make me cry.

Quality · 21/07/2010 19:50

I do have some books where I have read the same section a good 10 times mroe often than the rest of the book...

I won't read good books in the bath, in fact, I feel another thread coming on.

ShirleyKnot · 21/07/2010 19:59

staines - my favourites are:

The Stand (read about oooh 40 times I guess)
The Dead Zone (40 again)
Carrie (what a dark little book)
Dolores Claibone
The Shining
Firestarter

OH ALL OF THEM...

Re-read Talisman, it's a lovely read.

Duma Key scared me most from his recent ones, and the short story Room 1408. Jesus, and the FILM of that was scary as well.
