Starting WW tomorrow! Does it actually work?

takeawayandwine · 19/03/2023 17:00

So I've been trying (and failing) to stick to 1200 calories a day so I've signed up for WW and start tomorrow.

I've planned out my food for tomorrow and have used 19 points so far but it still seems like a lot of food if you factor in zero foods like fruit/veg/protein etc.

Has anyone had good losses with WW? Does it actually work? 😬

I'd love to hear your stories!

I would like to join you on this hut know nothing. How many lbs are you supposed to lose per week on 1200 cals?

Viviennemary · 19/03/2023 18:44

Tried it years ago. I was starving all the time. I think SW is better but not perfect either. As to how much you lose. Depends on how overweight you are and how much exercise you do and other things.

Poppins17 · 20/03/2023 18:11

Yes back in 2019 I lost 4 stone in 8 months. Unfortunately lockdown happened and during that time I completely went off plan and since then I’ve put that weight back on, but I’ve re-joined now. I started on 1st March and have lost 9lbs so far.

Good luck!

Floralfancy2 · 04/04/2023 14:54

I lost more than five stone on WW and that was partly through lockdown two so yes it does work. I’ve gone from being plus size to a single digit size. It takes a bit of time to get used to it but I like it and I think it teaches healthy eating habits in terms of fruit and veg and lean protein. Your points will reduce as you lose weight.

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 13/04/2023 12:30

Yes - I find it easy to use and I like the fact they've removed the weight restrictions on whole fruits and vegetables instead of imposing a limit (I used it years back for the first time when you had to weigh out grapes, an apple was half a point, etc). It stops me eating bread/pastries and has some nice recipes, including bean-based recipes which I love. The points are just another way of calorie counting but I like them as a neat tool. The cute encouragement from the app when you log in/track/hit goals is nice, too! You could do the same thing via myFitnessPal or other free apps but I like the group feeling and the cheerleading.

Floralfancy2 · 16/04/2023 00:28

@takeawayandwine feel free to Pm me! If you are an Aldi shopper then there are some really, imo, nice and good options that are very low point friendly buys!

floraflo · 16/04/2023 10:47

Good luck! I've successfully used WW in the past although clearly didn't keep it off as I'm back Blush
Im going to start tomorrow too so happy to support each other Smile

Theordinary · 18/04/2023 20:20

I've just signed up this evening. Have used it on and off over the last 20 odd years with great success. Kept most of the weight off for years too. Doing it again to lose 10 pounds ish

h3ll0o · 18/04/2023 20:22

It didn’t work for me but I went on to discover I had ADHD and need medication to stop me eating impulsively.

Sweetsweets · 09/05/2023 07:30

I tried it a few months ago I found it didn’t work for me however I’m in my 40s so it’s probably age related! Good luck 🤞 everyone is different

GeneralFerret · 09/05/2023 07:48

WW works for me, but you have to use critical thinking. If you have 0 point meals all day (which is perfectly possible) and then use all your daily and weekly points on treats or ,for example, bread. You probably aren't going to lose any weight.

In a day, I could eat eggs mushrooms and tomatoes for breakfast, a prawn salad with no dressing for lunch and chicken, cauliflower rice and other veg for dinner, followed by fat free yoghurt and fruit for dessert. That would total 0 points, if I then ate my 23 daily points on top of that say 2 slices of bread each meal (6-9 points depending on which bread), say I had some cheese on my salad (6 points) I've still got 8 points left so maybe I'll have a crumpet (3 points) and butter it (2 points a teaspoon). Ooh still got three plus my weeklies left I'll have a few biscuits before bed.

Well, you can see nobody is going to lose much weight like that but it is technically within the plan.

But, if you spread your points and have balanced meals bulked out with 0 foods then it works well.

Sweetsweets · 09/05/2023 11:03

So really it doesn’t actually work? If as you say it’s in the plan then it would? My way of thinking is calorie counting if you count the calories from all your meals as listed you will find them probably coming close to a dieting daily intake….. meaning all these alleged points for this that and everything else are false?
I think WW is just a bit of waste of time

Floralfancy2 · 09/05/2023 20:16

@GeneralFerret points are points. They are for spending. If you want to have 0 point foods then use all the points on treats then you have still have spent your days’ points. That is kind of the point in terms of enjoying foods you like but knowing that you have to balance it out with low point foods which are often healthier options.

MrsBooks · 28/05/2023 11:16

How are you all getting on? I started about 10 days ago and lost 6lbs on my first weigh in! Have another 2st 1lb to go!

I have breakfast and lunch sorted but am struggling for dinner ideas that fall within my allowance. Luckily I’m very active so clocking up a lot of weeklies and dipping into those most days.

Caplin · 29/05/2023 16:35

I find it the easiest to follow for me, and when I stick to it, it works. Thing is, I couldn't do what GeneralFerret is describing. A prawn salad no dressing wouldn't fill me at all, so I do tend to eat my points each day across all meals plus some weeklies. It means it is more balanced, I'm not tempted to stuff my face at the end of the day because I'm starving. I don't have time to think about ways to play the system, so the app is helpful, as are the recipes.

Basically, be sensible and don't try and save all your points so you can binge (but save some so weekends can be a treat).

I've tried other things, but this is just straightforward.

nocoolnamesleft · 29/05/2023 16:49

I do sometimes save up my points for say a chocolate brownie. It slows things down, but helps me to stick with it at all. 2 stone down since January.

Gintime74 · 04/06/2023 19:53

I’ve just joined. Still trying to work out how it works, there seems a lot that’s 0 points. I will play around with it over the next week , try recipes etc then get serious the following week. I am menopausal so expecting slow progress.

Floralfancy2 · 05/06/2023 18:15

Feel free to pm me @Gintime74 as I have been doing it for around three years or so and I would be happy to answer any questions.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 05/06/2023 18:25

I joined at the start of the year mostly to support two other friends who are very overweight.

Tracking is a pain but I did do it and do also do it when I remember. I actually had more success when I tracked and didn’t track over a month and lost almost a stone.

The one thing I do like is the meetings and other people at the meetings as you do think about what’s said there and also ideas.

One thing which helped was the fact that zero fat yoghurt is zero points. I actually had some today with 2 plums and considering doing the same for breakfast tomorrow. I don’t like eggs for a snack idea though…

One of the great things I do like is the recipes because often they’re things you’d never think of, Turkey mince was one suggestion last week and Turkey mince quesadillas. The thing is I hate eg Nimble bread and not keen on Fry Light either but it does help re weightloss. A lot of WW is common sense too, eg if you exercise a lot you can offset against food or if you eat more or less one day you can offset another day, eg for a meal out. Other common sense ideas is wine, Prosecco and cocktails are more calorie laden then eg vodka or gin with slimline tonic, a bar tender on Saturday tried to persuade me soda water was better as less calories but I didn’t have it!

TruthRevolution · 05/06/2023 19:21

Hi Folks, I joined today. Just using the app. I have 1 stone and 3/4 to lose that has crept up with a more sedentary job, more work responsibility that leaves me knackered by the end of the day and (I think) hormone changes. Also too much cava drinking!

Enough is enough and I'm determined to lose it. Any tips and hints appreciated!

Soda water is zero calories! It's fizzy water..

Floralfancy2 · 05/06/2023 22:04

@TruthRevolution get to grips with the 0 points list and then base as many meals around those so you can still enjoy the things you like. Aldi do protein ice cream lollies, ice cream and mousse that are pretty low in terms of points if you have a sweet tooth. M and S do a pizza that is around the 15 points mark ( it’s not the round ones) which means you can enjoy a pizza still!

TruthRevolution · 05/06/2023 22:30

@Floralfancy2 thanks for the tips. I'm surprised by how many of the foods are 0 points. I'll check out the M&S pizza. Not got much of a sweet tooth but love savoury, especially cheese!!

OhcantthInkofaname · 06/06/2023 01:56

Yes - it works if you realize it's not a start and stop process. You have to change lifestyle. But it's something that fits you. You control your points.
