New weightwatchers Smartpoints plan...

CharleyDavidson · 03/12/2015 18:22

...coming to a meeting near you as of next week.

I wonder what changes they will bring. I have spotted by scrolling forwards on the tracker that I will get slightly more daily points, but fewer weekly points. It also doesn't let you track if you get to that point yet, because the way that points are calculated seems to be changing.

I know that there's been a clear 'Sugar is bad for you' message in the meeting a few weeks ago. I've read that items higher in sugar will go up in value so that ww (in their own words) will 'give you a budget of points to stick to, and a nudge in the direction of eating more healthily'.

I'm sort of interested to see what they new plan will be like, I don't really like propoints too much. I got to goal on vintage points so I prefer them. BUT I'm not impressed that I'll have to re-buy all the point books and calculator as the whole thing will be different.

I tried to restart WW a couple of weeks ago having fared well on ProPoints until I went off track over summer. I find I get on best if I have a small treat built into my day but chocolate that was previously a manageable 4PP is now 8SP which makes it impossible and I've ended up going wildly off track (in that very grown up 'well I'm over my points now, I might as well eat cake' kind of way).

Anyway, two things that may help others not keen on the new system. The first is that the advice on FitPoints seems to be changing to suggest that they are to be eaten if you need them. That helps make it possible for me to stay in points (but my target of two FPs a day remains baffling: I earn that before I leave the house, I think).

Secondly, for those like me who found ProPoints just worked, there's a tracking app called Ultimate Food Value Diary (or something) that allows you to track using various different options including an equivalent of PPs. It will take steps from FitBit (or similar sources) and has it's own discussion area. I'm only a few days in and am tracking SPs on the WW app in parallel but so far I'm liking the Ultimate Food Value Diary app a lot.

Thanks very much for that information NannyNelly. I was smiling reading your post as I have been EXACTLY the same. I went off track during summer last year too after losing quite a bit of weight and loved my regular chocolate treat which we now cannot realistic have at all. I'm going to check out that app you mention and probably end up going with that. If this is happening to a lot of people like us then weight watchers could have made a big mistake as people simply won't stay with them due to the diet being unrealistic to stick to.

gemini0788 · 12/02/2016 22:35

So I've now cancelled my weight watchers and decided to go back to Pro Points. Going to download the Ultimate Food Value Diary and hopefully start losing some weight again. Even if I don't lose it fast still, at least I'll be allowed more treats and it will give me more incentive to keep to it! Thanks again NannyNelly for pointing me towards the app.

NannyNelly · 12/02/2016 23:28

Hope it works out for you! I'm signed up to WW til the end of the month but I think that'll it for me; the app seems to be working perfectly so far.

CormoranStrike · 13/02/2016 19:31

Two pounds off for me today, happy days.

mollkat · 14/02/2016 11:58

Have downloaded as recommended nannynelly - thanks for the tip.0

gemini0788 · 15/02/2016 11:05

I've now downloaded the Ultimate Food Diary which is great EXCEPT for the fact that it is American and the food database is American foods and measurements so it's not so easy to find what I need. For example it didn't even have Weetabix in there which I've had for my breakfast. I know we can still work it out on the calculator and we can also convert the weights but if there is a UK database online for Pro Points could somebody please let me know as I'd rather use that, although still happy to use the Ultimate Food Diary for the rest .... Thanks.

CadburysTastesVileNow · 17/02/2016 10:13

I've cancelled. It's not just the loss of ProPoints, its the fact that the whole system is just not as quick and easy to use / see where you are at a glance.

Will try Ultimate Food Diary, thanks NanaNelly.

NannyNelly · 19/02/2016 19:02

I'm finding the food database okay so far; did you try scanning the barcode for Weetabix, gemini? That might work (I think there have been things that haven't hit up on a search but have shown up that way; people don't always put the names in correctly but may well have input the numbers accurately).

gemini0788 · 22/02/2016 00:06

Hi NannyNelly, well after looking at the app properly I see that there are a lot of UK foods on there now too and gradually I'm adding all of my own favourites so I don't need to use it that much anyway. Well so far I've lost nearly 3lbs already in the first week of being back on ProPoints and I've been able to have my odd treats too so feel much happier and settled again. I am so so grateful for the Value Diary app as although it took a little getting used to I quickly got used to it and can't believe how I was paying £12.95 a month for weight watchers when all this has cost me is US$3.50 which probably only equates to around £2.50! I'm actually glad now that Weight Watchers changed their plan as it's made me look for an alternative which has turned out to be much cheaper. If they hadn't I would have been paying the monthly fee continuously! They've only got themselves to blame and I wouldn't be surprised if they were losing customers in their droves in the last few weeks and in the coming months!

CadburysTastesVileNow · 22/02/2016 08:41

When I cancelled they offered me a free period, Gemini. I wasn't tempted, but I imagine they are losing lots of people

gemini0788 · 22/02/2016 16:28

Hi CadburysTastesVileNow - Well they didn't offer me a free period and I would definitely have turned them down anyway. Absolutely thrilled with my new app and no more payments!

Sorry to hear some of you are having such a rough time on smart points. Im really getting on well with it compared to propoints which I never really got on with and gave up on 9 months ago.
The fact sat fat puts points up is quite like vintage points which I did very well on so I suppose this works for me as it is similar to that.
I do think they really need to sort out the app and website. Its very unclear what a 'portion' is ie 3 pts for one glass of wine... But no indication of how big the glass is. Then you go to select it and its suddenly 6pt for a not clearly sized glass of wine! I have to put everything in in mls and grams.
It is also inaccurate, for example it claims a medium pitta bread is 4sp, but when you actually weigh a very standard sized pitta they are obviously 8sp.
Considering pointing is supposed to be easier than calorie counting I don't understand why these bugs havent been sorted yet.

Thank you for the ultimate food diary app tip Grin

I lover pro points, they worked perfectly for me allowing me to loose 3st before my wedding. I maintained for 18 months, then went on an all inclusive honeymoon and haven't stopped eating since.

My 2nd wedding anniversary is in a month, and baby DD is now 5 months so it's time to get back on it.

I can't believe how cheap the app is compared to WW, anD I can use my Fitbit with it - happy days!

Bringiton2016 · 25/02/2016 18:50

I'm thrilled I've just read this thread. I'd lost a stone the week they changed to smart points, and haven't lost anything since! I feel set up to fail. I miss my sweet treats. I've just purchased the food diary app and will be cancelling my WW membership. I feel renewed hope!

gemini0788 · 01/03/2016 21:36

Good luck to all those who are back on the Pro Points (and even more luck to those on Smart Points as to me it's so so hard!). I've lost 5lbs in 2 weeks and I've had my lovely treats within my 49 extra weeks so I don't feel like I'm been deprived much and therefore won't fall off the wagon easily. It took me a whole month to just lose less than 3lbs on the new system so I'm now feeling much happier being back to what I know. And the only pounds I'm keeping now are the ones in my purse from not having to pay weight watchers monthly fee! Win win if you ask me :)

ChrissieMitch · 28/06/2016 17:56

I bought an app off Amazon does smart points pro points etc can keep a food diary and log activities, lets you give weight age abd activity level to calculate daily and weekly allowance only £2 cheaper and more reliable than we app itrackbites.com

TwentyOneGuns · 12/07/2016 07:26

I'm losing OK on SP but I know I'm going to fall off the wagon at some point. It's all very well for them to try and address health issues but tbh that's not what I go to WW for. I just need to lose weight and if I can build in a few treats that aren't stupidly high, as you could with PP, then I'm more likely to succeed. I'll definitely be checking out those suggested apps.
