New weightwatchers Smartpoints plan...

CharleyDavidson · 03/12/2015 18:22

...coming to a meeting near you as of next week.

I wonder what changes they will bring. I have spotted by scrolling forwards on the tracker that I will get slightly more daily points, but fewer weekly points. It also doesn't let you track if you get to that point yet, because the way that points are calculated seems to be changing.

I know that there's been a clear 'Sugar is bad for you' message in the meeting a few weeks ago. I've read that items higher in sugar will go up in value so that ww (in their own words) will 'give you a budget of points to stick to, and a nudge in the direction of eating more healthily'.

I'm sort of interested to see what they new plan will be like, I don't really like propoints too much. I got to goal on vintage points so I prefer them. BUT I'm not impressed that I'll have to re-buy all the point books and calculator as the whole thing will be different.

I'd guess that the 30 is the average daily amount of spts, and that the +6 are your maintanence allowance. 36 smart points plus 28 weeklies looks like the standard maintenance points.

I think the increase n points to sugar is good in terms off added sugars, but the increase for natural sugars such as in dairy products has been over done, and shouldn't be scored so highly. Mind you, been on major sugar binge this week and too tired to fight it, so may skive meeting this coming week so can get rid of it all again before next weigh in Sad

pigsDOfly · 13/12/2015 13:09

Ah yes of course, that makes perfect sense Charley thank you.

For most things, as far as I can see, nothing much has changed. When I first saw all the stuff they'd given us at the meeting I was a bit thrown, as I thought it was probably going to be a whole different system but it's pretty much the same, just the change with the sugars.

I hope they reinstate showing filling and healthy foods in app etc again...they now seem to be called no count again too. Trying to get my head around values and some things I would normally have are significantly more points heavy. It is not a bad thing to shake it up and think about what and how I am eating. Smoothies for me will be a treat rather than a regular...I always add greens and more protein but they can swallow points v quickly. I had a filet o fish and a plain regular latte after dog walking with friends ...I rarely eat any form of fast food. These two items took 16 of my daily 30 points. I love milky coffees and this is clearly going to be harder for me with a pint of skimmed milk 8 of my daily allowance... However, in our modern culture we have conditioned ourselves and been conditioned by advertising and suppliers to have what we want when we want it...this is not healthy. I have already for some time been mindful of eating as many whole foods as possible...reduce sugar intake...re meat and cancer links...meat free days are possible...fish is great and white chicken and turkey fine...red and processed meats can be eaten in moderation within the plan. I will find it harder as I like texture, flavour and health benefits from foods like nuts, seeds and avacados all v high in points. I ate one date then found it was 2 smart points. The inclusion of calories over fibre is going to scare a lot of people as ww was never about calorie counting as such...but presumably eating our fruit and vegetables will help our fibre intake...but many will be more scared off higher points wholemeal pasta, wholegrain rice and cereals. I find it odd that 30g oats raw is 3 sp but when cooked with water it becomes 4sp. Awaiting feedback from my leader on that one. I think the people who will find changes to the plan hardest are those that have been kidding themselves with too many treats and I have been guilty of this most my adult life. I am willing to give it a try and judge how I feel in myself ...my health and energy, my mood...as well as what the scales say.

CharleyDavidson · 13/12/2015 19:11

I agree that they've overdone the pointing of dairy. It's not going to encourage you to get plenty of dairy and calcium into your diet if the points are so high.

At one point, all filling and healthy (no count) foods were showing up just as green circles on the app and tracker online, so I think they will have a way of showing them again soon.

The tracker's not loading for me at the moment - again. I did complain on fb and got a 'we understand everyone's frustrated with the changes and problems' reply.

I'm going to find the fact that sugar is so penalised quite tricky from time to time. Having a little sweet treat occasionally keeps me on track and stops me feeling deprived. I've just had a tiny pack of jelly tots - from the multipack, so 28g of sweets. It's cost me TEN smartpoints. That's ridiculous. It's 99 cals for that pack. The same calorie count as a Special K chewy bar, which comes in at only 4 smart points. I know that all calories are not equal, but that amount of difference seems ridiculous.

I'm not sure how well I will have done this week as I've found it difficult to break the habit of sweet treats and I've gone over on points. I shall be happy to lose anything at this rate. Then I will weigh in tomorrow and then start again - hopefully with a better week!

So I wondered how everyones done on their first week on the new plan, I've lost 1 3/4 this week earned 75 fit points when they projected 17 and I found theyve rewarded me by dropping my weekly points from 35 to 28 Hmm

29PaddingtonSt · 14/12/2015 13:31

Weekly points drop in increments of seven so your loss has probably just knocked you down into the next bracket. Well done on losing!

pigsDOfly · 14/12/2015 19:32

I'm not sure this system is going to work for a lot of people.

Like you Charley I find that having a sweet treat, in the form of one of the Weight Watchers' bars in my case, actually kept me on course, but at 4 points on the new plan, it's a hell of a lot of points out of a basic 30. I know that's against 2 points out of 26 on the old systems so it balances out, but when basics, such a milk have gone up in points the overall points will get used up more quickly.

I'm sure the crackdown on sugar is all very commendable, but I could see it putting some people off and making it all seem too much like hard work to follow a system that allows little in the way of the odd treat.

CharleyDavidson · 14/12/2015 21:22

Last week I was half pro points and half smart points and I lost 2.5lb.

This week I ate all my daily points, all my weeklies and most, if not all of my fitpoints (even though you aren't supposed to) and I lost 3lb.

I have a kellogs chewy bar as part of my weekday lunch everyday. I have it with either homemade zero points soup or a tin of the ww 1 point chicken noodle soup if I've got no soup made. (Salad in the summer). It's 4pts. It satisfies my sweet tooth and isn't as overly sweet as I find the ww bars. And they are bigger too.

I don't like skimmed milk, but do buy the 1% and it's 5 spts for half a pint.

What I don't like is that there are so many errors on the trackers. I had a tiny bag of jelly tots to satisfy a sweet craving the other day. It came out as 10 pts. But if you work it out yourself from the NVs on the packet, it's only 3 pts after all. Disappointing that you can't trust their values.

I'm just most frustrated at the moment in the lack of communication. As an online member, I feel a bit abandoned by the new system, the rubbish IT issues and the inconsistencies on the site (I still see pp on some of the pages - not the tracker, but recipes and articles).

I'm only 5 weeks in (but it ain't my first time at the rodeo!) and haven't yet had a bad week. In trying not to do it this week, I think I've mainly been eating chicken and fish. All I had for lunch today was chicken! I haven't got my head round how to menu plan smartpoints whilst still cooking for the family and not denying DH his carbohydrates,

Any good recipe ideas that I can feed to the family but won't kill my SPs?

CharleyDavidson · 15/12/2015 23:23

Anything that's based around protein and veg with a small amount of carbs should be fine.

Tonight we had 'make your own pizza' with Warburton thins for the bases. They came out ok.

Roast dinner. Casserole (not sausage as they aren't good on points).

StarryStarryElf · 16/12/2015 06:34

Blankiefan I cook a chilli con carne for everyone, it's a slimming world recipe that a a friend gave me, the DC's all eat it with cheese, sour cream and wraps. I have it with cauliflower rice. Lately I have been making a meat free version which has been really tasty but much lower in points.

There is also a chicken and chickpea recipe in one of the WW cook books that I have done for everyone before. There are a few more that I'd like to try.

I also batch cook some of my meals and put them in the freezer, that way I can do sausage and mash or similar for everyone else and just do a re-heat for myself.

29PaddingtonSt · 16/12/2015 13:43

Charley- Heck Chicken Italian sausages taste lovely and are just 1sp for two or 3sp for five!

CharleyDavidson · 16/12/2015 13:45

Ooo, thanks. I will try them in a casserole then.

I knew I was eating less with Smart Points - I've lost 5.5lbs and I'm not that far from goal. My WW leader was amazed and I think relieved as I heard a lot of other people complaining about them ahead of me.

I've got used to my daily allowance now. My lattes have gone right up so will be a once weekly treat I think. Would love to lose another 3lbs this week and then stay the same Christmas week ideally.

newcamper · 17/12/2015 15:04

Lager on my cereal from now on!!!

loopsylala · 20/12/2015 13:11

have the message boards gone from the website?

CharleyDavidson · 20/12/2015 16:38

They're there. Just buried a bit.

You have to click on community, then scroll down right to the bottom and to the right there's the link.

CharleyDavidson · 21/12/2015 14:43

On a computer or tablet/phone? I find I can only occasionally get on via my tablet but usually manage on my laptop.

OP posts:
CharleyDavidson · 21/12/2015 14:44

No, they won't load on my tablet for me with that link either.

just started ww again, just bought some ww packed meals, now I need to convert pppoints to smart points ,not liking this much.anyone know how many smart points is in 7 pro points?

cocochanel12 · 06/01/2016 13:50

I hope they bring in ready meals with smart points

29PaddingtonSt · 06/01/2016 14:12

Coco, a Smartpoint is calculated differently from a ProPoint so there is not a direct "exchange rate". SmartPoints packaging will start to filter through to the shops. The speed will depend upon the individual supermarkets. In your meeting you can pick up a leaflet which lists every item of WW food sold and the SP value.

gemini0788 · 12/02/2016 12:42

I have now been on the new Smart Points Weight Watchers plan for 5 weeks and very disappointed that although I have stuck to it I've only lost around 4lbs. I have followed the Weight Watchers plan on and off for years now and found that on the Pro Points Plan I easily lost around 1 1/2 stone within 6 months and even had a good supply of treats at weekends such as MacDonalds Quarterpounder with Cheese meal quite often. I know they are trying to make it more healthy now but I have a sweet tooth and I'm seriously missing the odd sweet treat as they are sooooo high in points now. For example, my regular treat used to be a curly wurly at 3 points, they are now 6 points (or was it 7?)! I'm not even having my full extra weekly points and still hardly losing. Thinking of seriously going back to Pro Points and have found an app which has this. I'd actually save money by going back to Pro Points as I wouldn't be paying my online membership any more. It's a real shame ..... :(
