Can anyone recommend a diet pill that works?

I'm on a diet and have managed to lose 10lbs! Woo Hoo!

But I've reached a plateau and have been looking on the web at some of the diet pills available to help break this 1lb on, 1lb off thing I'm caught up in.

Does anyone know of one which actually works?!?

I'm especially interested in Acai berry or natural things, I'm not keen on ones that contain stimulants as I have trouble sleeping at the best of times.

Do any of them actually work?!?

Here's hoping ...

Oo er, I forget to check thread for a few days and it all kicks off!

OK. Where do I start?

  1. I walk for 2 hours per day with the pram- school runs.
  1. I'm eating strictlyish 1500 calories per day- I'm using Food Focus to track my calories per day. I think I'm meant to be eating 1566 or something per day. Although did eat a twirl today.

So I am eating less and exercising more. I was losing 1lb per week, but for a month now one week I lose a lb, the next week I gain it back. I've just started back on the pill, so it may be that. Don't know what's causing it really.

I was thinking that if I could have something to boost my metabolism for a week or so, it might start the ball rolling again, so to speak.

I would start running, but I have spd left over from my pregnancy and have been advised by physio that it's not suitable, and I'm in pain from the walking as it is tbh. I ran before DS2, and loved it and lost loads, which sucks!

Will investigate kelp. I could do with help with my hair, as it's started falling out since I finished bf.

I think it's unfair to judge people when you don't know the full story and also, I was asking for a diet pill that works (if one exists) not for criticism.

Oh and I've tried Adios Max before and found it worked for about 1 week, and then stopped workign, for the person who was interested in that.

OK. I'll stop now!

Feel free to flame me if you want anyone- I'm having such a great day- no one can make me feel down today!!!

Do you know why these fat poo-ing drugs work? Because YOU STOP EATING AS MUCH FAT.

There is NO magic pill or do you think the NHS are just keeping it top secret as they prefer treating obesity related diseases?

All diet pills come with the adage - must be taken in conjuction with a calorie controlled diet, I wonder why that is?

Most of the things that actually boost your metabolism rather than just claim to are illegal in this country.

sleepysox · 20/05/2010 20:24

I totally agree Libra, which is why, as I said in my post, I am following a calorie controlled diet.

I think the point of diet pills isn't to see them as a magic bullet, just another tool to help you along. I was chatting to my sister about them- she says they curb her appetite, but she is aware of what she puts into her mouth. She has reduced her portion size (no longer eating same amounts as DH) and checks calorie content of foods when out & about etc. If she was troffing cakes all day then it wouldn't work. She just doesn't have the same feelings of hunger. I have studied nutrition- fat blocking pills can be detrimental as they cannot differentiate between "good" unsaturated fats (omega 3etc) & saturated "bad" fats.
HCA is another supplement that limits the conversion of excess carbs into fat by blocking an enzymatic process. You can read more on this in patrick holfords "the holford diet" book.
5HTP another supplement is a precursor to seratonin and can be used to help lift mood, improve sleep & reduce carbohydrate cravings.
Konjac fibre pills make you feel really full. Kelp pills support the thyroid gland (metabolism) but have no impact on appetite. I could go on. (but won't!)

There are lots of different products but they can't stop you stuffing cakes into your mouth unless you make the switch over in your head re sensible food choices. They can help though if you just need a bit of an extra boost. Please research and or check with an appropriate professional / nutritionist before taking supplements though to make sure there will be no interactions with medications etc

I think the point of diet pills is to make money for whoever manufactures/sells them.

sleepysox · 21/05/2010 08:43

Beast- you've put it really well. I wish I could express myself as eloquently as you.

BTW- I lost 2lbs, so maybe I've moved on from my plateau.

For those that are interested, I've just ordered 'appesat'a natural appetite suppressant, that works by fliing you stomach with a seaweed like substance to make you feel fuller for longer.

Will let you know how I get on (for those that are interested). For the purists- I am still following a calorie controlled diet + exercising, I just want to give my weightloss a boost. DS (7.5 months old) has just reached the top of the waiting list for this round of hydrotherapy (he has special needs) and soon those thin physios with the long flicky hair will be aghast at the site of me in a swimsuit- so I must take more action!!!!

Read this as well
I have put it on another thread as it is blinking long, but it is quite intersting, just ebcause your weight loss 'appears' to have stalled doesn't mean it has.

toucancancan · 21/05/2010 14:18

It could well be the pill. I was on one that immediately made me gain a few pounds. As soon as i came off it I lost that weight. Commiserations on the weight plateau - it is so disheartening when you are trying so hard.

Is it possible for you to exercise in the morning before you eat? This should help you burn fat rather than calories that you've just eaten.

sleepysox · 21/05/2010 21:38

Thanks Jack- that makes me feel so much better. I have copied and pasted it to show my friend whose also dieting!

Thanks Toucan. I hadn't thought about exercising 1st thing- but it would make sense. I'd be able to do it in the school hols, but I'm always in a mad rush and walk to school as it is, so it wouldn't be possible during term time.

Thanks for being so helpful ladies

Hi Ladies, not sure of you're still looking at this thread, but I just wanted to say to sleepysox, that if your weightloss has plateaued and you hair is falling out you might have a thyroid slow down.

Goto your GP and have all your thyroid function checked.

The weight you mention could be water retention, so I would take a multivitamin (Solgar female multiple is good) and drink and extra litre of water a day.

Good luck to all.

ppeatfruit · 31/07/2010 14:10

I have taken nettle supplements which as well as speeding up the metabolism are actually GOOD for you (you do need to be near a loo when you first start though).

sophieandbelly · 31/07/2010 14:19

capsiplex is ment to be very good, i havnt tried it but will be ordering some to go with my slimming world return after dc arrives.

i have tried reductil which the dr precribed me they were great. again like u i try and get to a certain point on my own then need a push, which is what iam hoping this capsiplex will do. good luck let me no how u get on xx

ShinyAndNew · 31/07/2010 14:22

Ephedrine works. But it is illegal and very dangerous. None that they sell over the counter work and unless you want possible heart failure, palpitations, hot sweats, dry mouth, paranoia and many other things that ephedrine brings I'd steer clear and stick with exercise and healthy eating.

ppeatfruit · 01/08/2010 08:55

I know this isn't a pill but 2 things you can do to move your weight sleepysox is the Hay Diet (not mixing protein and carbs) and eating fruit on an empty stomach ; also good for health!

Chianna · 01/08/2010 09:11

There is only one way to permanently lose weight and that is too eat less (or better) and exercise more. Diet p;ills and fad diets only work in the short term because they do not fundamentally change your eating habits. Therefore often when you stop taking diet pills or end your diet the weight goes back on or worse you add more than you lost in the first place. Sometimes you do hit a plateau and it gets harder to lose weight as you get closer to your ideal weight (I know its always those last few pounds that really hurt). The best thing to do is honestly evaluate what you are eating and how much exercise you are doing and see if you can add more exercise in either by going to the gym (yuck) or for example walking places faster or walking further. A pedometer is a good way of judging whether you are getting anywhere near your 10000 paces a day. If this really isn't working a trip to your GP or treat yourself to a consultation with a dietician will probably be more effective in the long term than diet pills.

Whatever you do don't give up as you are obviously on the right track as you are losing weight.

uggmum · 01/08/2010 09:21

I was obese and was given orlistat by my gp. This was effective and I did lose weight. However, I put it back on and more after about a year.

I then went on the Dukan Diet and have consistently lost weight every week. ( I have started a separate thread on this). I also exercise 3 times a week.

I have lost a total of 38.28 pounds so far and I am officially overweight. I aim on losing a further stone.

Losing weight is hard and you have done really well to lose 10lbs. Alli or Orlistat may give you a bit of a kickstart to your weight loss.

ppeatfruit · 03/08/2010 10:52

No Jack nothing works long term if you go back to eating badly the same as usual! BUT a pill or diet can get you started and then if you continue healthily you can stay slim IMO

GetOrfMoiLand · 03/08/2010 11:02

Be careful with slimming pills - i went on a diet kick years ago and bought some off the internet, they were ephedrine (which effectively is speed).

Not nice. Yes I lost weight, but I also lost all sense of perspective.

I think the ones they sell in health food shops don't have an active ingredient really, they may 'help' as part if a cal controlled diet, but that's it. Becasue, frankly, anything that does work is not legal to sell.

The exception is Alli, however how much of the succesful weight loss is due to people eating less anyway, in order to avoid the nasty side effect of greasy poos.

If I were you i would try teh Dukan diet - it is very successful and easy once you get used to it.

For diet loss, I would suggest don't remain dependent on medicines only. Try to introduce some kind of exercise or activity in your life. I myself suffer from obesity. My BMI is high and my doctor recommend Orlistat( www.pharmica.co.uk/weight-loss/orlistat ) to me. With orlistat, I join gym & start noticing the things that I am having. I wish you the best.

anna781 · 28/11/2019 07:29

There are lots of weight loss pills that may harm your health. Don't take any diet pills if you are expecting a child/breastfeeding.

There is a good thread about "diet pills" on Quora:
www.quora.com/What-are-diet-pills-that-work-fast-without-exercise-Is-it-possible

ageingdisgracefully · 01/12/2019 10:38

Did you say you were eating 1500cals per day?

I'd reduce to 1200 and see how you get on.
