Has anyone tried this?

Those ten pounds I've needed to lose for so long have become more like 20, or 30 if I wanted to be slim rather than just not overweight. But I am useless at dieting.

Just got his book and wondered if anyone wanted to give it a go with me. I want to lose at least 20lbs.

gailforce1 · 02/04/2010 16:31

I will certainly give it a go. Have managed to lose 2.5 stone in just under a year. I know that would seem very slow progress for some people but my GP said that I was more likely to keep it off if it was slowly lost!
I could certainly do with losing another 21 lbs! I thought that he had done a CD as well?

meandjoe · 02/04/2010 21:10

I did it, it does work. I then got pregnant with ds though and spent the 18 months after he was born eating junk! Am now using some of his techniques to help me shed the weight again. I found the tv programme he did for it really motivating and ell worth a watch if you see it on youtube!

ZZMum · 03/04/2010 16:44

I will do this with you - started yesterday with the 90 day diary so would be be really happy to buddy up! I find the rules make sense to me and given I have gotten nowhere using my own diet plan, think this could help - would rather not join SW or WW so putting all my faith and lard in PAul...

I need to lose 20lb to so lets do it!!

realitychick · 03/04/2010 17:02

Brilliant.

I want to lose 20lb as well. Need to borrow a bathroom scale to get the real figure .

I've already noticed since reading the book that i do a lot of eating when I'm thirsty instead of drinking water, so have changed that, and that the biggest challenge is the late night sofa munchies, downed 700 extra calories without even realsing the other day. Last night I just told myself I wasn't actually hungry and the urge went away really quickly, because I knew if I had been truly hungry I could have one of the chocolate caramel bars my OH so thoughtfully bought in bulk yesterday and it wouldn't be against the rules. It is interestingly different!

OP posts:
ZZMum · 03/04/2010 17:05

excellent - I am finding the water so good for curbing my urge just to eat for the sake of it - quite often now find self in kitchen about to eat something when not hungry and now am making sure I have water instead - so hopefully we shall be slimmer and will glowing skin!

Out for dinner tonight - am going to use the rules to make sure I do not over eat but not sure what impact wine will have on memory of them!!

ZZMum · 06/04/2010 20:25

Reality ..So how is it going - I am finding it a bit easier than I thought but am not sure I am eating too much by justifying it under the "eat what I want" banner... but do feel a bit more in control - am following SW rough guidelines in what I eat and using this to modereate it - with a lot of exercise .. not going to weigh myself as that way lies madness for a few days - just feeling stomach flattening slowly ...

How you doing?!

BouncingTurtle · 07/04/2010 08:58

Can I join? Started this plan on Monday, so far it seems to be working as I do think I am eating less.
I am definitely a fully paid up member of the -clear-your-plate-don't-you-know-there-are-starving-orphans-in-Ethiopia-club! Plus I tend to eat when I am bored.
I want to lose 3 stone, I did manage to lose 3 stone about 3 years ago, doing Slimming World, but piled it all back on again when I fell pregnant, and didn't lose it (breastfeeding does NOT make you lose weight lol), in fact now weigh more than I did when I started Slimming World! Did try SW again but could not get into it.
I like this plan of Paul McKenna's because I already feel more relaxed about food because nothing is forbidden, it is more of a re-education about food. DH is doing it as well and he says that he notices food taste better (I guess because you are able to taste it more when you are not bolting it down!).
DH's brother introduced us to the plan, he has lost quite a bit of weight on it and he has managed to keep it off too, and wholeheartedly recommends it!

realitychick · 09/04/2010 19:56

Hi - just got back from holiday so am starting this properly tomorrow (heard that before?) But even while I was away, it was interesting that I didn't nick the kids' easter eggs, or eat crisps which I normally would, because I just didn't fancy them. Maybe it's starting to work.

I need to get weighed though, as no scales in the house and it would be good to start out with a start weight and target weight.

ZZ - one thing I did think when I first read the book is that it's too short. He doesn't repeat himself enough for it to hypnotise you in one go. (I read the Alan Carr years ago and gave up smoking for good.) I'm going to keep rereading it until it sinks right in. I tried the aversion visualisation on bread, and it put me right off.

Hi BouncingTurtles. It's great to hear it worked for your DH's brother. I do that thing of eating so fast I didn't know I'd eaten, too.

Good luck everyone.

I did think that you do need to keep reading it over and over.
Also, have you listened to the CD yet? I must admit I haven't!
So far I think it is going well, it has made me aware of how much I was eating when I wasn't hungry!
Took DS to the park and bought him a minimilk, normally would buy myself an icecream too, but I didn't as I thought about it and realised I wasn't hungry or thirsty so what was the point!
Food always taste better when you are hungry, I think!

realitychick · 10/04/2010 18:00

Hi

No I haven't listened to the CD yet either. But just reading the book made me realise how often I was stuffing food in my mouth without even tasting it, and when. Seems to have helped with the killer TV sofa munchies I get, and several times I've been about to guzzle something then realised it was what he calls emotional eating. Just now I was going to eat a bar of chocolate because it was there then realised I wasn't hungry. It's interesting that I didn't miss it because I know when I am truly hungry I could eat it, rather than it being forbidden and a constant willpower battle.

Good stuff on the ice cream at the park Bouncing turtle. You're so right about food tasting better when you're hungry.

I lost weight last year more or less using this method - 40 lbs and have kept it off. I think it is the only sensible approach to eating/dieting.

BouncingTurtle · 10/04/2010 19:27

Wow, amothersplace, that is amazing! I think that is the keen thing, keeping it off isn't it. Many people do the yo-yo dieting thing. My cousin is very very obese, but 3 times she has managed to slim right down (she was in Slimming Magazine many years ago) only to pile it all back on again, following one diet plan or another. Now I've started the following the same trend, but I am determined to break it.
Basically it is just common sense but we have years of bad eating habits and food guilt ingrained into us.

noshouting · 11/04/2010 08:04

Oh ladies just ordered the book and would love a support thread.
Have 2 stone to loose and really want to feel and look better, am 40 in May and would like MY body back.
Am fed up with this lumpy one

realitychick · 11/04/2010 11:53

Bouncing - that's what I'm hoping is different about this plan. There's no dieting involved, no banned foods, just a readjustment to a sensible, healthy approach to food. Eat what you want, stop when you're full, don't use food as diversion from emotional problems or boredom. Exercise more. it's based totally on enjoyment and long term healthy mental and physical attitude.

Hi Noshouting and welcome. I know what you mean about wanting your body back. There's a weight - not skinny - not fat - right in the middle - that feels right, that just 'is' my weight. I want to get back there and stay there.

Went well yesterday. I ate only when hungry. Went babysitting and didn't even want the crisps and chocs my friend left out. I'm starting to think I don't like them as much as I thought I did - they are craving foods, not foods I genuinely appreciate.

How's everyone else doing?

OP posts:
realitychick · 12/04/2010 18:11

Hi,

Finally listened to the CD. I guess that's why the book is short - because you're supposed to listen to the CD every day. I felt wiped out afterwards though and ended up napping so not quite the vital energy he promised. Early days. Lots of stuff comes floating into your mind about why you overeat, (or did to me) which I found a bit uncomfortable as I didn't want it to put me off losing weight.

But again, felt in control and only ate when hungry. Also bought scales today and according to them, to get to my 'normal' rather than stupidly thin ideal weight, I need to lose 17lbs. Seems like quite a lot.

Anyone else?

No I still haven't listen to the CD!
I probably won't until next week, when DH is getting me a netbook for my birthday, I figured we could both listen to it before bed!

Reality - it says don't listen to the CD while driving, now we know why Do you think it'll work on my 2yo who barely naps

realitychick · 13/04/2010 08:26

Worth a try!

OP posts:
ZZMum · 13/04/2010 13:24

I am not reading the book or doing the CD as I seem to be doing OK solo at the moment! I have already seen a new attitude to my eating and am thinking like slim people must I guess!

Love how I don't have to change what i eat - just how much so the kids get a better role model as well .. so far so good!

BouncingTurtle · 14/04/2010 15:12

Think DH and I are still doing okay though we bolted our dinner yesterday, we realised halfway through, though as soon as we did we slowed right down!

How are you all doing?

realitychick · 14/04/2010 23:48

Hi BT,

It does take a while to remember, doesn't it? Old habits die slowly but it's good that they're on their way out.

Was doing absolutely fine, until I got some bad news during dinner and realised I'd just stuffed down a plate of food I didn't want without thinking. Emotional eating again. But until then, things have been good - recognising when 'hunger' is actually thirst or feeling chilly or tired - all those sensations which I used to automatically try to put right through scoffing.

OP posts:
BouncingTurtle · 15/04/2010 08:47

'Old habits die hard' - ain't that the truth

Exactly what I told DH!

Loujalou · 15/04/2010 09:17

His mum was a cookery teacher at my school - not when I was there though.

Might invest in the CD though.

GinSlinger · 15/04/2010 09:37

I've been tempted into this as well - thanks. My book and CD arrived today and I want to try and ditch about 18 - 20 lbs. I suppose i ought to weigh myself and get some accuracy.

NicknameTaken · 19/04/2010 14:29

Hello all, can I join? I read the book and started listening to the CD this week, and I was very impressed by it. I've eaten less than usual (including a lovely no-guilt cookie today - one was enough!) and I'm delighted at the lack of obsessing over food. I found the CD really relaxing, I enjoy the lovely visions of my future self - I think I could get pretty evangelical about this!
