Right. It seems that most of us are going to be low carbing. However, please join us, even if you're following some other kind of plan!

From tomorrow, there are three clear weeks until the end of January, and the aim is to lose half a stone. Some of us may lose more, especially if we have a lot to lose, but half a stone is a good - and safe - amount of weight to lose in three weeks.

If you're low carbing, there are plenty of different plans around that you can follow. The three that I'm most familiar with are Atkins (of course), Charles Clark and India Knight/Neris Thomas. All of these books are definitely worth a read.

If you're thinking of starting off with two weeks of induction, Atkins-style, I thought the following might be useful, just in case you haven't got the book. This is a list of foods that are allowed during induction. (It's from the original Atkins, apparently, and I think things have changed somewhat, but this will give you a good guide for it; you might find it useful to print off and take with you when you're shopping:

"In addition to your proteins which are the focus of this diet you eat NO MORE THAN 20 GRAMS OF CARBOHYDRATE PER DAY. Your diet will consist of mainly pure proteins and pure fats and limited amounts of vegetables.

Eat liberally during Induction:

All fish
All fowl
All shellfish
All meat
All eggs

Mayo, vegetable and olive oils, butter, lard, dripping, poultry skin and meat fat

*Cheese (more recently limited to 100g per day)
Any full-fat, firm, cream, hard, soft or semisoft aged cheeses

*Fresh Double Cream (more recently limited to 3 tbsp a day)

*Nuts (more recently removed from allowable induction foods)
Almond, brazil, macademia, pistachio, pecan, walnuts.

*Count carbs from nuts, cream and cheese (if applicable) into your daily maximum of 20 carbs a day

Vegetables

You can have two/three cups(1.5lbs) per day of the following

sprouts
mushrooms
bok choy
peppers
celery
radishes
lettuce
romaine lettuce
cucumber
artichoke
celery
pumpkin
rhubarb (no more than 8ozs)
asparagus (no more than 8ozs)
chard
sauerkraut
bamboo shoots
collard greens
spring onions (no more than 8ozs)
snow peas (no more than 8ozs)
bean sprouts
spaghetti squash
eggplant
spinach
broccoli
hearts of palm
string or wax beans
broccoli rabe
kale
summer squash
brussels
kohlrabi
tomato (no more than 8ozs)
bean sprouts
leeks
turnips
cabbage
okra
water chestnuts
cauliflower
onion (no more than 8ozs)
zucchini

If a vegetable, such as spinach, tomato or onion cooks down significantly, it must be measured raw so as not to underestimate its carb count.

Salad Garnishes
crumbled crisp bacon
grated cheese
minced hard-boiled egg
sautéed mushrooms
sour cream
mayo
lemon/lime juice

Spices
All spices to taste, but make sure none contain added sugar.

Herbs
basil
garlic
rosemary
cayenne pepper
ginger
sage
cilantro
oregano
tarragon
dill
pepper
thyme

For salad dressings, use mayo or oil and vinegar (but not balsamic vinegar, which contains sugar) or lemon juice and herbs and spices. Prepared salad dressings without added sugar and no more than two carbs per tablespoon serving are also fine.

Artificial Sweeteners
sucralose (marketed as Splenda?)
saccharin
cyclamate and acesulfame-K
aspartame (in moderation)
certain sugar alcohols, such as maltitol, do not affect blood sugar and are acceptable.

Acceptable Beverages
Be sure to drink a minimum of 3 litres of water each day, including:

Filtered water
Mineral water
Spring water
Tap water

Additionally, you can have the following:

Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
Club soda
Coffee or tea
Diet soda
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories")
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carb per ounce); limit to two to three tablespoons

Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed.
Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in later phases.

Special Category Foods
To add variety, each day you can also eat 10 to 20 olives, an avocado, sour cream or double cream, as well as two to three tablespoons of lemon juice or lime juice. But be aware that these foods occasionally slow down weight loss in some people, and may need to be avoided in the first two weeks. If you seem to be losing slowly, moderate your intake of these foods.

Convenience Foods
Although it is important that you eat primarily unprocessed foods, some controlled carb food products can come in handy when you are unable to find appropriate food, can?t take time for a meal or need a quick snack. More and more companies are creating healthy food products that can be eaten during the Induction phase of Atkins. Just remember two things:

Not all convenience food products are the same, so check labels and carbohydrate content. While any of these foods can make doing Atkins easier, don?t overdo it. Remember, you must always follow The Rules of Induction.

ENSURE YOU EAT LESS THAN 20 GRAMS OF CARBS A DAY ON FOODS LIKE NUTS, SEEDS, AVOCADOS, SOFT CHEESES, CREAM AND SOUR CREAM, LEMON AND LIME JUICES AND LOW CARB DIET FOODS. CAREFULLY MEASURE YOUR PORTIONS!"

Hope this helps, and good luck to us all!

That should say for hubby's birthday treat, although he is a hunny!

BecauseImWorthIt · 24/01/2010 17:01

Sounds like you did well!

Don't cut out the veggies - you need the nutrition that they offer as well as the fibre.

Hi BIWI, good weekend?
Yes I know you're right. I just don't seem to be shifting anything, thought maybe a kick-start of protein only?? might help?? maybe those protein shakes?? as well as maybe a multi vit?? I don't know, just throwing ideas around!!

(I think AF is on the way, I have been craving something chocolately all day, like a mini crunchie, which is not currently like me.)

BecauseImWorthIt · 24/01/2010 20:03

There is always what's called the Three Day Experiment (no idea why it's called that!) which is useful if you've been overdoing it on the carbs. If you haven't, though, it's probably just three difficult days for no apparent benefit!

For three days you only eat lean protein. A maximum of 5gs of carbs each day - so no veg. And keep the fat to a minimum as well. It's hard going but if you've been overdoing the carbs then apparently you can expect to lose 3-5lbs by doing this. When you've finished, though, you have to re-introduce carbs gradually, so you start by adding a small salad to one of your meals.

But if you've been good (cocktails aside) I'm not sure it's really worth it. Just make sure you're following induction rules properly. Maybe look at your portion sizes, and try and cut them down a little?

And drink lots of water. Often when we think we're hungry it's actually because we're thirsty. So try a drink before heading towards the fridge.

Hello! Coming up for weekly weigh-in tomorrow. Had a sneaky peek today and this week hasn't been as successful as last, but am still down (though not by a lot) - so mixed feelings chez moi this morning. Good motivation for being especially good today!

B - ham and cream cheese roll ups, with a sun-dried tomato
L - if I can be bothered to make it, cauliflower soup. Otherwise antipasti.
S - sausages with butternut squash

I've just discovered celeriac mash, and am planning celeriac bravas (from this book) with chorizo later this week.

BecauseImWorthIt · 25/01/2010 08:41

I have that book - I've made the beef korma and the moussaka, and both were lovely. However, as I was making it for the family I doubled the quantities (the recipes say they serve 2) - and they make a massive amount! The other odd thing is that Bee Rawlinson apparently never seasons her food - or perhaps she just takes it for granted that we will use salt/pepper in things.

I'm very interested in the celeriac bravas; I'd forgotten that there was a recipe for them in the book. Let me know if it's good!

Sorry - forgot to weigh in this morning (late up), so will do it tomorrow. Have been good on the food front, but have allowed too much wine this weekend.

hello all,

my internet access went down on Friday , didn't know what to do with myself, but luckily the router mysteriously decided to start working again yesterday.

You all sound as though you've been doing well.

It's been quite good this week, have been getting more into the swing of it. But, have noticed that it really is all about preparation and planning for me, otherwise it will go very pear shaped. Much like my bottom!

Anyway, here we go.

Hi all good to see people still here! Well done on all your commitment.

I'm just popping in to check in as STILL mad with work.

Officially 90.5 this morning - woohoo! So not as much as last week but 2.5lbs (and 9.5 in two weeks) still making me v happy. And I'm on the boundary of a stone so I'm pretty motivated.

I've now done my two weeks induction but I'm going to still take it quite easy, we're introducing berries and Total full fat greek yoghurt (less carby than other types it seems) this week, and perhaps a few carbier veg for variety. But not wine yet, or sugar substitute things - because that will be the downfall of me. I want to lose at least a stone before I take that risk!

WilfSell · 25/01/2010 13:28

Are all you guys with bad cravings doing the following...

  • taking chromium?
  • eating enough protein and fat?

I was the World's Biggest Craver of carbs - cakes, crisps, biscuits, chocolate before starting this diet. I decided not to eat any sugar substitutes because I wanted to get rid of cravings and sweet tooth. I think the all or nothing approach has worked for me. Creme fraiche with a few nuts and a splash of vanilla extract tasted almost cloyingly sweet once I was properly in ketosis. And even cabbage tasted sweet the other day!

I rarely have cravings either. I was VERY surprised by this but perhaps you should try it for a few days. I am liberal with the fat though (cream, creme fraiche, cheese). I'm sure this helps...

Brilliant.

Well done everyone else too - it's great to see us all below 100. And YouLuka - just get back on to it and focus and you'll be fine.

BecauseImWorthIt · 25/01/2010 21:30

Today:

Breakfast - cheese omelette
Lunch - roast chicken quarter with brussels sprounts
Dinner - chilli (made without the kidney beans), cabbage and served with a dollop of yoghurt and some grated cheese

small handful of nuts and 2 sugar free Werthers

OP posts:
WilfSell · 25/01/2010 22:14

For dinner I made stir fry. It was lovely. I just used some straight to wok noodles for the kids with a bit of sauce, which I did after I'd mostly cooked the main stuff, transferred it into a serving dish, then finished off the veg etc back in the wok with some toasted sesame oil and a splash of soy sauce.

Used: pak choi, beansprouts, spring onions, marinated tofu. With garlic, ginger, star anise.

Lovely. And so nice after days of rocket

And for lunch I had a big salad with iceberg lettuce, celery, spring onions, a bit of halloumi and a bit of salami.

I shall be experimenting with fennel, radishes and celeriac next...

brimfull · 26/01/2010 08:06
