Right. It seems that most of us are going to be low carbing. However, please join us, even if you're following some other kind of plan!

From tomorrow, there are three clear weeks until the end of January, and the aim is to lose half a stone. Some of us may lose more, especially if we have a lot to lose, but half a stone is a good - and safe - amount of weight to lose in three weeks.

If you're low carbing, there are plenty of different plans around that you can follow. The three that I'm most familiar with are Atkins (of course), Charles Clark and India Knight/Neris Thomas. All of these books are definitely worth a read.

If you're thinking of starting off with two weeks of induction, Atkins-style, I thought the following might be useful, just in case you haven't got the book. This is a list of foods that are allowed during induction. (It's from the original Atkins, apparently, and I think things have changed somewhat, but this will give you a good guide for it; you might find it useful to print off and take with you when you're shopping:

"In addition to your proteins which are the focus of this diet you eat NO MORE THAN 20 GRAMS OF CARBOHYDRATE PER DAY. Your diet will consist of mainly pure proteins and pure fats and limited amounts of vegetables.

Eat liberally during Induction:

All fish
All fowl
All shellfish
All meat
All eggs

Mayo, vegetable and olive oils, butter, lard, dripping, poultry skin and meat fat

*Cheese (more recently limited to 100g per day)
Any full-fat, firm, cream, hard, soft or semisoft aged cheeses

*Fresh Double Cream (more recently limited to 3 tbsp a day)

*Nuts (more recently removed from allowable induction foods)
Almond, brazil, macademia, pistachio, pecan, walnuts.

*Count carbs from nuts, cream and cheese (if applicable) into your daily maximum of 20 carbs a day

Vegetables

You can have two/three cups(1.5lbs) per day of the following

sprouts
mushrooms
bok choy
peppers
celery
radishes
lettuce
romaine lettuce
cucumber
artichoke
celery
pumpkin
rhubarb (no more than 8ozs)
asparagus (no more than 8ozs)
chard
sauerkraut
bamboo shoots
collard greens
spring onions (no more than 8ozs)
snow peas (no more than 8ozs)
bean sprouts
spaghetti squash
eggplant
spinach
broccoli
hearts of palm
string or wax beans
broccoli rabe
kale
summer squash
brussels
kohlrabi
tomato (no more than 8ozs)
bean sprouts
leeks
turnips
cabbage
okra
water chestnuts
cauliflower
onion (no more than 8ozs)
zucchini

If a vegetable, such as spinach, tomato or onion cooks down significantly, it must be measured raw so as not to underestimate its carb count.

Salad Garnishes
crumbled crisp bacon
grated cheese
minced hard-boiled egg
sautéed mushrooms
sour cream
mayo
lemon/lime juice

Spices
All spices to taste, but make sure none contain added sugar.

Herbs
basil
garlic
rosemary
cayenne pepper
ginger
sage
cilantro
oregano
tarragon
dill
pepper
thyme

For salad dressings, use mayo or oil and vinegar (but not balsamic vinegar, which contains sugar) or lemon juice and herbs and spices. Prepared salad dressings without added sugar and no more than two carbs per tablespoon serving are also fine.

Artificial Sweeteners
sucralose (marketed as Splenda?)
saccharin
cyclamate and acesulfame-K
aspartame (in moderation)
certain sugar alcohols, such as maltitol, do not affect blood sugar and are acceptable.

Acceptable Beverages
Be sure to drink a minimum of 3 litres of water each day, including:

Filtered water
Mineral water
Spring water
Tap water

Additionally, you can have the following:

Clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
Club soda
Coffee or tea
Diet soda
Essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories")
Herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
Lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carb per ounce); limit to two to three tablespoons

Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed.
Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in later phases.

Special Category Foods
To add variety, each day you can also eat 10 to 20 olives, an avocado, sour cream or double cream, as well as two to three tablespoons of lemon juice or lime juice. But be aware that these foods occasionally slow down weight loss in some people, and may need to be avoided in the first two weeks. If you seem to be losing slowly, moderate your intake of these foods.

Convenience Foods
Although it is important that you eat primarily unprocessed foods, some controlled carb food products can come in handy when you are unable to find appropriate food, can?t take time for a meal or need a quick snack. More and more companies are creating healthy food products that can be eaten during the Induction phase of Atkins. Just remember two things:

Not all convenience food products are the same, so check labels and carbohydrate content. While any of these foods can make doing Atkins easier, don?t overdo it. Remember, you must always follow The Rules of Induction.

ENSURE YOU EAT LESS THAN 20 GRAMS OF CARBS A DAY ON FOODS LIKE NUTS, SEEDS, AVOCADOS, SOFT CHEESES, CREAM AND SOUR CREAM, LEMON AND LIME JUICES AND LOW CARB DIET FOODS. CAREFULLY MEASURE YOUR PORTIONS!"

Hope this helps, and good luck to us all!

Welcome, thereistheball! I'm, apparently the boss leader here, so sit up straight and pay attention.

Sorry your ttc hasn't worked this month, and quite understand the illegal alcohol. I'm having a bit of a struggle in my own mind as to whether or not to have a drink this weekend, but as the scales are still telling me 94, I don't think it's really a good idea.

Well done to everyone so far - I'm wondering if half a stone in three weeks was too easy a target!

Thanks everyone. I had forgotten how rubbish wine makes you feel on this way of eating, so am struggling a bit today. On the other hand, now that I remember I suppose there will be fewer lapses in future. Have to hope I haven't derailed things to badly in the meantime.

Today for breakfast I had nurofen, egg-fried tofu with soy and chilli sauce, some nuts, and I've just had some ham and cream cheese. I am still hungry - pesky hangover - so am slugging back the water in the hope that helps.

Lunch will be smoked mackerel pate with cucumber and celery, and supper will be fish with salsa verde and fried courgettes. If I can get myself up off the sofa.

Hope you all have lovely plans for the weekend. I am going to be busier than I'd like but am making up for that by being supremely lazy today

BecauseImWorthIt · 22/01/2010 20:21

I will confess right now that I am drinking champagne. No special reason (other than I've gone a couple of weeks without having a drink, and I just fancied some).

Food wise has been good today - so far!

Breakfast - scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, on the train to Manchester
Lunch - chicken, tuna, cheese and salad
Snack - slices of smoked pork loin, on the train back home

Dinner - tonight is curry night; I don't know what the carbs will be in my chicken curry, but I'm not having rice and haven't ordered a naan bread, so I'm not tempted to snaffle any of that; a spinach bhaji to go with it.

Yes it would be bad! It would set you back by days! You have done So well! Don't give in now. Treat yourself to a low carb cheat, berries and fresh cream for instance, Mmmm delicious! And much better for you than all those nasty carbs

My AF is almost here too but I am pleased to say I haven't had my usual cravings, phew! I have felt more hungry though so have eaten more protein which has done the trick. I've had loads of cheese!

I'm a lurker by the way, keeping an eye on you from afar but seeing as no one has popped on to keep you on the straight and narrow I thought I would jump in

Keep up the good work!

Hello timeforme. Good name, wish I had some.

When I have cravings I beat them into submission with hot soya milk, a splash of double cream, a pinch of Splenda and a drop or two of vanilla essence. Works every time.

BecauseImWorthIt · 23/01/2010 17:35

nOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! Don't do it Sal - you know it will undo all your good work so far.

Well Done supersalstrawberry you will feel great for not having given in. It shows you are in charge of your cravings, not them in charge of you.

Thank you thereistheball. I used to wish exactly the same, hence the name but these days I make sure I have 'time for me', even if it's just half an hour locked in the bathroom with a magazine (and yes, in the early days of this diet is was due to constipation! )

This is a great thread BIWI and I'm so glad you started it. I'm not weighing religiously, I'm going more by how I feel for now but I can tell you I feel fabulous!! I have a flat stomach, no bloating, no cravings and I have more energy than I know what to do with. I am also sleeping like a dream! Not only that but my skin is glowing and the skin on my hands has changed appearance dramatically, they were really showing signs of ageing, wrinkly skin, but since I started this plan the skin seems to have plumped out. I don't know if that's because I'm eating fat in abundance of because of all the water I am drinking. Another plus is that I am now over the initial constipation and am going to the toilet more regular than ever before. I feel this plan really is a way of life for me now and I can't believe I have spent so many years depriving myself of full fat foods in order to lose weight when I feel as good as I do eating cheese, cream and butter!

Apologies for the essay but I'm on a bit of a high!

BecauseImWorthIt · 24/01/2010 11:30

Not surprised! at flat stomach.

Glad to report 94 again here.

Yesterday:

breakfast - no time before I rushed off to my Chinese class, so bought a large latte en route (probably a bit too carby)

lunch - green salad, pancetta and left over roast veg (peppers, courgettes, leeks and green beans)

dinner - roast chicken, roast swede and brussels sprouts.

Enjoyed some Prosecco as well

I'm not surprised you've dropped a dress size if you've lost 10lbs!

Hope the hangover doesn't spoil your Sunday too much.

Welcome, SingleMum01! But just so you know, you shouldn't be going to no carbs, just low carbs. The aim is to get your carbs from salads leaves and vegetables, rather than from anywhere else. This means unprocessed meat and fish. You should cut out all pasta, rice, bread, potatoes, sugar and most fruit - apart from berries and rhubarb, all of which are lower carb.

Have a read through the thread and it will give you some ideas for meals, as many of us have been listing out what we've been eating.

It's definitely worth getting hold of a copy of Dr Atkins 'The New Diet Revolution', so you can understand the thinking behind low carbing.

Thanks will have a look at book and start at beginning of Feb when I've been paid and shopped and not eating left overs! Please keep posting easy to make meals.

HinnyPet · 24/01/2010 16:06

Well have just got back from Amsterdam ofr hunny's birthday treat, I think all I had that was "carby" was a hot chocolate.
Had no bread, pasta, rice, nothing like that, loads of veggies and meat from the buffet, bacon, sausage, eggs and grilled tomato for breakfast, a ham and cheese omellete for lunch and a lovely steak and salad for evening meal.
I was SO good, I was so really good! (apart from 8 cocktails, bugger!)
I really don't think I've lost anything more, maybe I need to cut out veggies now?
