I have tried (religiously) ww and rosemary conley with limited success. Has anyone done slimming world and can summarize the rules or recommend another diet please

cut out cheese, bread, biscuits, wine, choccy and any processed foods and it will drop off, boring but it works

brimfull · 27/12/2009 13:47

yes cut out processed carbs ie all white pasta/ bread chips etc.
To do it quickly cut out carbs and stick to protein and veg .

gingernutlover · 28/12/2009 08:05

hiya bishboschone

I too have a stone to lose (maybe a little more but a stone would be fab) I was thinking of doing what skymoo and ggirl suggest, do you think we can still have potatoes?

Also, any ideas for lunches and breakfasts? Dinners are easy enough, meat and veg with brown rice or brown pasta I guess.

Is cereal okay with skimmed milk?

I have a really bad sweet tooth and think it would be a very good thing fr me to cut out sweet crap for a while.

ladytophamhat · 28/12/2009 08:36

i have at least that to lose - have to cut out wine - drinking far too much over this time of year and am just spreading...

ChristmasTreeTrunkThighs · 28/12/2009 08:46

I lost a stone and a half on slimming world.

It worked for me because you really can eat and eat and eat. I can honestly say I ate more on SW than I do usually, just because I could and consistently lost weight.

Once I reached target weight I have managed to stay at it for 6 months by 'doing' SW from Monday to Friday and letting it all hang out at the weekend.

The bit I found hard, but soon got into the habit, was planning in advance and changing the stuff I bought.

Hard to summarise the rules so if I were you I'd make an effort to join - even if you just go the once you'll have the book which tells you all about it.

TheTwelveDAISYofChristmas · 28/12/2009 09:05

SW is good. there is a monthly magazine whixh will give you a taster diet and the rules.

there is also a slimming world thread on here which will be helpful.

The basic premise is that you have either green days or original days. On green days you can have unlimited veg and carbs with small amounts of meat and bread/cereal and on original days you can have unlimited amounts of meat and veg with small amounts of carbs and bread/cereal. Fruits and deserts are counted for their "syn" value and you can have up to 15 syns a day.

It's worth going to a meeting and getting the book though as it has all the syn values and free foods, and shows you how you can mix and match your green/original at each meal in a day and now there is an extra easy where you have less healthy extras, but can have unlimited green and original choices. Sounds bonkers but it works. My sisters have lost 6.5 stone between them in the last year on the extra easy option and they have galvanised me to join again (did it years ago pre DC)

gingernutlover · 28/12/2009 09:56

the thing that puts me off slimming world is the fact that you are able to overeat and still lose weight - I think for me this is a very unhealthy habit to continue over eating is overeating whether it be choclate or mullerlights.

But it obviously works for some people and I know from friends that the loss is quite quick.

Cybilshoeboots · 28/12/2009 09:59

Higher protein ,lower carbs, more exercise more water.

Do not do Rosemary Conley, Slimming world or Weight watchers, they are not sustainable ways of eating for long term life long weight loss.

UndomesticHousewife · 28/12/2009 10:10

Unfortunately the only way is to eat less than your body needs and exercise more - especially if you have less to lose - it becmes harder than if you have more to lose (I think anyway), unfortunately I don't take my own advice hence I still have that stone to lose.

ronshar · 28/12/2009 10:13

A very simple way to lose weight, and more importantly keep it off, is to slowly teach yourself to eat less and do alot more exercise.

Keep a food diary and it will horrify you into taking a hard look at your diet.

Make time each day to walk at least a mile. Only takes 15 mins.
Within a month you should be able to walk at least 2 miles a day without even noticing.

bishboschone · 28/12/2009 14:50

thanks everyone.. I am very active and understand eating well. Its weird cause I turned 35 in November and just seemed to get fatter overnight. I am size 10 but all my clothes are size 8 so its not major but being short it shows. I have been wearing dresses over xmas because all my clothes are too tight

watching thread with interest, i live on pasta and bread. Can manage without pasta but what can I have instead of bread, I have a lot of sandwiches - good for taking to work. Ideas please?

gingernutlover · 29/12/2009 08:56

singlemum, what type of bread?

Granary is lower GI than white, ie keeps you fuller for longer so wouldnt be a problem especially if the sandwich is packed out with lots of lettuce/cucumber.

Other ideas for lunch are cous cous (very quick to prepare) ryvita's, pasta salad ( i freeze mine in lunch size portions) or what about homemade soup?

BalloonSlayer · 29/12/2009 09:02

I found that focusing on the evening meal, and cutting carbs there worked brilliantly.

Eg instead of having say pasta bake or spag bol with quite a bit of bread to go with it, I'd have chicken breast in sauce, no rice, pasta, potatoes or bread and a large salad.

The weight just fell off and most went from my stomach and waist. Am planning on starting again next week when DH is back at work and I am in control of meals again.

HerBeatitude · 29/12/2009 09:41

I have lost a lot of fat this year by following Paul McKenna's system.

It's easy. Eat whatever you like, whenever you are hungry and STOP WHEN YOU ARE FULL.

The latter is the bit which most people fail on. I was shocked by how much I had educated myself to override my body's "full" signals and still keep putting food in my mouth when my body was telling me I didn't need it.

Now I eat whatever I like, there's none of this faddy cutting out of food groups or of any food you like. I've just learned to eat less of everything. Have definitely put on weight over the holiday, because I have been ignoring my body's "full" signals again, it being Christmas, but I know I'll lose it all again in January as I go back to eating normally.

ilovemydogandmrobama · 29/12/2009 09:44

That's really good advice HerBeatitude.

Cybilshoeboots · 29/12/2009 09:49

Single Mum I too am a bradaholic and have been having soup for lunch (must get back on the soup rain now after Xmas excess) with oatcakes. I don;t have toast at breakfast anyomre, and have half the amount of pasta i used to eat.

this has ideas, they call it a 'diet' but its a way of eating for good

if you have low GI stuff with High GI food it balances it out somehow

Cybilshoeboots · 29/12/2009 09:49

By BRADAHOLIC I of course mean, breadoholic

Ohforfoxsake · 29/12/2009 09:50

I'm a big fan of the Harcombe diet because it sorted my candida imbalance which was causing my cravings for processed, fatty foods, bloatedness, and made me feel fabulous. It's a low carb diet, the first phase is a detox, but it worked wonders.

gingernutlover · 29/12/2009 09:57

herbeautitude I also have the paul mckenna CD but have never really got into it enough to lose wieght

i find it hard to stop emotional eating and I too have numbed my full signals so much over the years I find it really hard, theres also a little voice inside my head that tells me i'm not worth it which is the main reason why i think i find it hard to lose wieght.

Any ideas how to switch off my little voice and switch on the full signals?

lisasimpson · 29/12/2009 10:11

And don't forget on PM there's the other rule about eating consciously - i.e. eating slowly, enjoying each mouthful and putting your knife and fork down between mouthfuls. Bet you don't eat as much!

Cybilshoeboots · 29/12/2009 10:12

eat off a side plate not a dinner plate.

lisasimpson · 29/12/2009 10:14

and if you are having trouble with your 'feeling full' signals try eating with a blindfold on - apparantly it works because you are eating what you feel you can not what you see.

Cybilshoeboots · 29/12/2009 10:17

Ha! Blindfold, love it

HerBeatitude · 29/12/2009 11:10

gingernut - I found that keeping a diary of what I ate and continuing to listen to the CD helped focus me and made me bear in mind that I was trying to not overeat. It's now become a habit.
