i have just left ww after losing a few pouinds before xmas and putting them back on again. I couldnt stand the leader and found the meetings very boring. I find counting points etc simply makes me obsess and think about food so much it messes with my brain.

So, my new plan is to stop eating snacks, try to do a bit more exercise and lose a little bit at a time until I am happier with my wieght/appearance.

Has anyone tried this, did it work?

Anyone fancy doing the same thing and buddying me?

Hi GNL - that sounds like good plan - I'm a weight watchers and slimming world failure who is still keen to lose at least a stone! Why should we have to pay about £5 a week when we could be sensible by ourselves & save the money to buy new clothes for our new figures!!!!
Your plan sounds a good idea and if we could support each other hopefully would be good!

moshie · 18/01/2009 14:04

Yes I did this last year and lost over a stone. Put a bit on over Christmas so ready to get back to eating sensibly again.

Three healthy, filling but balanced meals a day and no picking. Wine on the weekend only, and a long walk or bike ride every week.

Niecie · 18/01/2009 14:12

Can I join in?

I desperately need to lose quite a lot of weight but I really don't want to join any of those slimming groups as I don't want to 'diet'. I want to change my lifestlye and for it to be a permanent thing, not calorie/point/sin count. I don't believe that is really sustainable for life.

I think it can work, but I don't think it is a quick fix and I don't think it is without pain at the beginning. It takes a long time for habits to change.

Sorry, got to go - lunchtime.

I will be back.

MrsMattie · 18/01/2009 14:18

Hi ginger.

I have been doing the following since Jan 3rd and have lost 10lbs already.

Walking at least 60 mins a day Mon-Fri
Doing 1 x exercise class a week
Eating at least 5 portions fruit & veg a day
Limiting sugar, wheat, caffeine, cooking fats (oil, butter, plus marg on bread etc) and alcohol (limiting, not banning completely).
3 healthy meals a day (not huge portions) plus 2 low fat snacks.
Drinking loads of water.

I have loads more energy, fewer cravings (although do still crave chocolate at night!) and don't feel too deprived. I'm never going to stick to a calorie-counting diet, so a healthier lifestyle that's realistic (I will be eating cake / drinking wine now and again, sorry!) is the only way forward for me.

Very pleased with rapid weight loss/. I know it will slow down (inevitable) but I'm OPK with that. I want to keep it off, so willing to do it sensibly.

MrsMattie · 18/01/2009 14:19

ok = opk

JackBauer · 18/01/2009 14:21

HI there, can I come in?
I was thinking about ww/sw until I found they were all either at night or at about 4-5ish, and I would have to take DD's, and they eat at 5 so prob not a good idea!
I have been doing a carb curfew, so no potatoes/pasta/bread after 5. SO with my tea I have a massive p[late of stirfried/roast/steamed veg and some protein. It actually doesn't feel like I am missing out and means I can cook teh same for the rest of the family.
Can't go for walks for various reasons but am doing at least 10 mins a day excercise video and dh and I are lookign at getting a cross trainer too.

not sure about weight as have period but feel less like snacking which helps.

mogs0 · 18/01/2009 22:37

Can I join too? I finally kicked myself up the backside on Thursday and banned myself from snacking between meals. This is my fourth day and so far I haven't crumbled (although, I am really hungry at the moment).

I have been overweight all my life but it has got a lot worse since having ds (he's 6) and I'm now trying to shift the baby weight .

Ds' school is a 30 minute walk uphill and even my fittest friends have trouble walking up there. I do it approx 6 times a week and often pushing a pushchair (I'm a CMer).

I have a terribly sweet tooth and night time picking has been my downfall.

I don't own a weighing scales and the last time I was weighed was when I was pg and it claimed I was 95kg (I'm sure it was faulty!). I've no idea what I am now I'd just like to drop a few dress sizes before I turn 30 later this year.

Goodness, this has turned into an essay, sorry !! Please don't throw me out for talking too much!!

One more thing......does anyone have any evening meal ideas? It's only ds and I here and he could do with fattening up so would be helpful if recipe could be adapted for us both.

AussieSim · 18/01/2009 22:42

Can I join? DC3 is 8mths old and I still have 9kg (roughly 18lb I guess) more than pre-pregnancy and I want to get rid of it before the big 40 in April.

I joined a gym, paid for a 10pack of personal training sessions and stopped eating sugary treats, substituting for fruit and veg.

I think giving up 'bad'snacks is a good idea but better to substitute with good snacks, otherwise the tendency is to over eat at the main meals. I am trying to remember the old - 'Eat like a king at breakfast, a prince at lunch and a pauper at dinner'.

Niecie · 19/01/2009 13:36

Can I give this a bit of a bump - gingernutlover hasn't come back?

Shall we start without her?

SpinningEm · 19/01/2009 19:25

I'd love to get started Niecie

mogs0 · 19/01/2009 19:50

Today is my 5th day of no snacking and I have felt hungry since about 10.30am. Also, I have been craving biscuits since about the same time!! I think the initial enthusiasm has worn off.

peasholme · 19/01/2009 19:57

Hello, is it too late for me to join? I need to lose at least a stone, ideally two. My problem is grazing all day, and a love of bread. I am also trying to knock the snacking on the head and face the gym. What on earth can I have when ravenous at 10.30? Mogs0 did you resist the lure of the biscuit?

mogs0 · 19/01/2009 20:12

I did resist until I'd had my lunch (which I'm allowing myself to do!). I have the same problem of picking all day long so I'm trying to only eat at meal-times. I also love bread and have ordered some rice cakes in my food delivery to try and substitute it. I hadn't felt hungry at all until today. My head is hurting now so I'm off to get a satsuma and a glass of water!

peasholme · 19/01/2009 20:29

good on you! Good luck with the rice cakes. I did quite well on them until my friend introduced me to the delights of eating them buttered... I have just eaten some trifle, so off to a cracking start as you can see! Tomorrow will be a different story.

Niecie · 19/01/2009 23:00

Oh dear, I had forgotten I bumped this and here's me, eating Jelly Dinosaurs too.

Right, if you haven't all done a runner and left me by myself, I shall start properly tomorrow. I have had a very sedantary 10 days as my DS has been ill, chaining me to the house in the process. Tomorrow, I shall go out and walk somewhere......and not eat Jelly Dinosaurs.

mogs0 · 20/01/2009 19:11

I've been in a total daze today. Fell asleep on the sofa last night and when I finally went to bed I couldn't go back to sleep and was awake until 4, then overslept!

I tried having porridge this morning for breakfast and replaced the heaped spoons of sugar with a frozen cube of fruit puree. It was vile!!! I'll go back to porridge with sugar tomorrow and just use less!

I've felt hungry again for most of today and I still have a dull headache.

I haven't done any walking today either but will make sure I do both school runs on foot tomorrow!!

How's everyone else doing?

mogs0 · 21/01/2009 21:04

Have you all deserted me?!!

Managed another day with no snacking but think I'm getting a bit obsessed by it now! Hopefully, I'll get used to the new eating routine and won't have to think about it so much!!

Niecie · 22/01/2009 15:04

I'm still here. Sorry, domestic dramas - broken central heating and now DS2 is home with a temperature again (he was off last week too).

No routine or anything at the moment and certainly no extra exercise. I can't wait until the end of January - hopefully spring will be on the way and everything and everybody will slowly begin to feel better.

Well done for continuing with this. Do you have a weigh in day?

This is the hardest bit isn't it - just changing habits that have been part of your life for ages - well for me anyway.

I haven't actually eaten anything today. Didn't fancy anything when DS had some toast earlier and now he is feeling ropey again he doesn't like me leaving the room and I don't like to eat in front of him.

I will hopefully get something in a minute. He is watching Duck Dodgers which is a bit of a favourite!

MarkPT · 22/01/2009 15:32

Great post!

Mrs Mattie, that is exactly the plan I give to my PT clients, and if you can stick to it for at least 4 weeks, you will be on a winner!

mogs0 · 22/01/2009 16:50

Niecie - I hope your ds is feeling a bit better and that your central heating has been fixed. I can't imagine getting to 3 o'clock without eating anything - I'd have definitely passed out by now - my stomached rumbles the second I get out of bed (especially at the moment with it being on rations!)!

I don't have a weighing scales so won't be having a weigh day. I'm going to measure any weightloss by the fit of my clothes!! I'd like to get down to a size 14 (am an 18/20 atm).

I feel rubbish today. I think my body is rebelling against my new eating habits. I still have a dull head-ache so might have to re-think my approach to this. We're having fish pie for tea when I can gather the energy to go and make it. I almost got a lift up to school today but forced myself to walk, I'm sure it'll all be worth it in the end!! I just wish food wasn't such a big thing in my life.

Niecie · 22/01/2009 22:00

MagSo - Your headache does sound like you are having withdrawal symptoms over something, doesn't it? I hope you are feeling a bit better now. At the risk of sounding like your mum, are you drinking enough water?

I have eaten at last although I am not very hungry. I think I can get passed wanting to eat in the end. Sadly it doesn't happen very much!

I am also an 18/20 hoping to get to a 14. I don't really aspire to being a 12 as even at my lightest, with a size 10 waist and top half, my pear-shaped butt wouldn't fit into a size 12 easily. I wasn't born to be skinny and I doubt that has improved with age!!

DS2 is in quite a bad way - he has had a temperature despite Calpol and Iburprofen and obviously feels rough. We got off lightly last week I think when he was fine in between doses of medicine. He must have had way too much fun being off school and it has caught up with him, poor little thing.

Thankfully the heating is fixed too. Thanks for asking.

Hope you have a good day tomorrow.

gingernutlover · 23/01/2009 20:34

hi all

sorry been a rubbish week at work and been doing paperwork all evening, every evening when i get in

i do still want to do this.

To be honest I was thinking of just having 3 decent meals a day and only having fruit in between

my worst time of day is evenings, where i snack on stuipid things

we had chicken pie, potatoes and carrots with gravy tonight so not super healthy but i havent eaten since

would like to aim to get down to 11 stone, am about 11,10 at the moment.

My "healthy wieght" according to ww is less than that (10,6) but i havent been that since i was about 15

Niecie · 25/01/2009 19:34

Hi Gingernut. Sorry you have had a bad week. I hope the next one is better.

Evenings are my weak point too. I can be sensible all day and then just blow it all in the evening. I suppose the trick is not to buy anything that I shouldn't eat but that is not easy. It becomes a bit of a habit just to put a bit of chocolate (or jelly dinosaurs ) in the trolley.

I just hope we all stay well this week as I am becoming a bit stir-crazy not being able to go out because a poorly child. DH is very busy at work until the end of the month and isn't home much to help out. I am looking forward to the end of January. I kind think I will start properly in February but I am going to try to get out a bit more next week and have some exercise even if it is only walking to the post office instead of getting in the car.

We shall see how it goes.

mogs0 · 25/01/2009 21:12

I've been away for the weekend so mealtimes have been all over the place but hardly any snacking! We had quite a long delay on Friday and ended up not having lunch because we were unexpectedly stuck on a coach for 6 hours!! Whilst my friends were all suffering from hunger I wasn't too bad!

I did loads of walking yesterday and climbed up and down lots of steps so feel that the vodka over-load last night was kind-of cancelled out by all the exercise!

Does anyone plan their meals for the week? I keep trying to do this but never get to the point where I have a plan to follow. I think I need to get more organised!

Much to my suprise, I'm enjoying the ryvita / rice cakes for lunch. I'm also having soup to keep warm while the weather is so cold!!

Going to walk to school tomorrow - morning and afternoon.

Niecie · 28/01/2009 09:42

Hi Mogs0 - sounds like you are doing well.

I have had a mixed week so far. Monday was good - no snacking but yesterday was not so good. However, I did a lot of walking yesterday so maybe there will be a trade off.

I don't menu plan, not properly anyway. I have a rough idea what we will have. Not sure it is helping though as that is what I have always done and it doesn't stop me buying crap I don't need!

I am trying to implement a small change in habit to save a few calories. At the moment I put the boys to bed and then just crash on the sofa and leave sandwich making until bedtime as I can't be bothered with it. Unfortunately, by then I am peckish and tend to eat something whilst I am making the sandwiches. I am trying now to do the sandwiches before collapsing on the sofa as I will not long since had dinner and won't feel like picking. Thats the plan. However, collapsing on the sofa usually coincides with something good on the telly so it will be a little difficult to give that up.

As with all aspects of weight loss, I need more will power!!!!!!
