OK, my ds was born a year ago. I didn't get very big whilst I was pregnant but had quite a big baby (8lbs 10oz). I am back to the weight I was before pregnancy but I wasn't happy being this weight in the first place so not satisfied and seriously have no body confidence!

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be a size zero or anything, could never be less than a 12 as my hips and shoulders are broad. I am 5"8 and currently weigh exactly 13 stone which classes me as over weight with a BMI of 28. I'd like to get down to 11 stone which would give me a far healthier BMI of 23.

Trouble is, I have no idea where to begin. This last week i have been cutting out the crao (eg fried stuff, snacks Buger King etc!) and have been eating veg and drinking fruit smoothies. Haven't been weighed yet so not sure if it's working but I do feel better.

The problem is I'm bloody starving!!! I think about food constantly although I don't want to eat it as I really want to look and feel healthier.

Is it true that no diet ever works? If I start eating normal amounts again (minus the burger king and snickers bars) will I just put it all back on again?

I went on a diet 2 years ago with a starting weight of 12lbs 12oz, got down to 11st 4lbs and felt much better, problem is, I got lazy and soon headed back to burger king and ate just for the sake of eating. It's time to STOP!!! I am 24 and my body makes me feel crap sometimes. I don't want to be skinny but surely there is a way to shift the blubber round my legs???? My waist is fine, that's the nnoying thing, my waist is a size 12 but my arse and legs are at least a 16 so i look completely out of proportion and struggle to get clothes to fit well. The waist on all my jeans is massive on me but the legs are bulging at the seams. I just want to be in proportion. Any ideas? Any good excercises or simple diets where I won't fantasise about cooking our dog and eating him as I'm so hungry??!

Well I have been very good today. Only had a small bowl of cereal for breakfast with skimmed milk. Having grilled chicken breast with salad for lunch. Not sure about tea yet but it'll be something healthy!

Doing very well, went and bought only healthy food in this morning so I am sorted for the week! Haven't got weighed since last Friday though, that was the day I started to cut out the rubbish and eat well.

I'll let you all know how it goes when I gt weighed on Monday (I go to the boots instore scales) as I refuse to have scales in the house and also it gives me a little print out slip which I find encourages me as I can SEE the pounds coming off even if I can't feel it straight away!)

I think I miht know who the wedding was, if it's who I think it is then WOW boysarelikedogs, you have well known family members! I could be way off tho!

Off to eat my yummy salad!

well done - start as you mean to go on!

Do you plan treats for your achievements? Something for every 2/7/14 pounds? I don't as I am too impatient.

Not sure how I did today as we had a picnic and grazed a bit. But its Saturday, and I weighed in this morning. I am rather with myself for the weeks weight loss, but I AM still bf and that definately helps.

Stuffed vine leaves are a good snack. They are only 1 WW point each, not sure what that translates to in calories, but it does tell me that its pretty low-fat and a good option.

meandmyjoe · 26/07/2008 21:22

Sounds like all your grazing was healthy grazing so i wouldn't worry! Sounds like you are doing great. Well done on the weight loss! Not sure if this is being rude but would you mind sharing how much you lost please? I know it's personal but I'd just like to know if it is acheivable for me too! Damn it, ds up and crying gotta go!

OP posts:
foxythesnowfox · 26/07/2008 21:27

Oh I don't mind at all, but just want it to be in context - that the bf helps. I'm not sure if it is 'proper' to use breastfeeding as part of a weight-loss programme .

It was 5 pounds.

Normally I would have waited until I finished bf (only fed up to 6 months with the others) and found it incredibly difficult to lose weight. But now LO is not reliant on me nutritionally, I don't have to worry about it so much.

It won't happen again though. I got a delivery of Hotel Chocolate end of season sale goods today.

meandmyjoe · 27/07/2008 08:09

Couldn't get ds back to sleep till 11! He's never like that in the night so hoping it was a one off!

Anyway, wow, 5 lbs, that's incredible, well done!!!! Think it would take me a month to lose that much!! I tend to lose about 3lbs the first week but then it slows down so much that I give up! NOT THIS TIME THOUGH!! I am determined to lose it and tone up no matter how much I crave biscuits and burger king!

The breastfeeding burns a big chunk of calories but don't underestimate how much difference the diet is making! You're doin so well. I want to get weighed now but I'm scared I won't have lost any and I'll feel rubbish.

Ooo you lucky thing foxy, that chocolate sounds amazing! I'm sure the odd bit of chocolate in an otherwise healthy diet won't make too much difference, plus, since it's already been delivered it would be criminal to let it go to waste!

Anyway, making poached egg on wholemeal toast for breakfast so I'm gonna get off!

Morning!

We had a rubbish night here, baby had a soaring temperature all night. So we're a bit knackered. Trouble is, its days like these (after nights like those) where I do the most damage. I've already had two pieces thick white bread toasted with butter and marmalade. Now I feel like a big stodgy, sticky tum thing, which is what it does to me. Should've had the same as you. I hate the way junk makes me feel. But I love the taste.

I have to be really, really careful not to inhale a whole packet of biscuits on days like these

meandmyjoe · 27/07/2008 11:01

Aww how old is your baby? Hope the temperature is down now. I hate it when ds is poorly, even if he sleeps, I can't sleep cos I'm too worried about him!

I know exactly what you mean though, after a crap night, I always tend to be drawn to the choccy digestives. Oh and I so know the stodgy feeling you are referring to! I LOVE unhealthy food, always thinking about it but then the second I've eaten it I feel foul! I just have to remember that and it will hopefully discourage me from eating it.

Also, don't worry, one day of pigging out doesn't mean the whole diet is wasted. Enjoying a bit of toast and marmalade doesn't mean all is lost, tomorrow is a new day and all that!

Sorry you had a crap night, hopefully things will be better tonight.

foxythesnowfox · 27/07/2008 12:33

was it just one egg and one slice of bread?

foxythesnowfox · 27/07/2008 13:39

you could add a grilled tomato, some fry-lighted mushrooms and two lean back bacon rashers... mmm that's what I'm having for lunch I think. Except I don't have toms or mushrooms.

And I am pinned to the sofa.

Have you looked at Weightwatchers? I loved it because you don't feel deprived. Anything goes, in moderation (or not, you could eat a packet of biscuits if you chose to, just nothing else!)

It does cost, but you could register and get the info and not go back. It works on a points system, each food has a 'value'. I suppose its common sense, but makes you very aware of what you are eating.

Are you writing down what you have? Make sure you have enough!

meandmyjoe · 27/07/2008 19:01

Thanks, yeah I am writing down what i have and I find it does make me aware of whether I am actually hungry or whether I just THINK that I'm hungry!

I know today I have eaten very very healthily but I may treat myself to a glass of wine later once dh has put ds to bed!

Yep it was just one scrambled egg with 2 slices of wholemeal toast with flora light spread.

I was well ready for lunch though! We had an enormous salad as a late lunch/ early tea with grilled chicken breast and lots of lettuice, spinach leaves, beetroot and cucumber with a amall table spoon of savoury
rice. It was gorgeous and actually made me realise that I LIKE healthy food!

Just having a bowl of cereal for tea though as we only had dinner at 3:30pm so I'm not hungry. It was a very large salad served on huge square plates but I figured with lettuice and other salad stuff I can just have as much as I want to fill me up right?? Not sure if that's actually the case but I was hungry and fancied an enormous plate full.

I've looked on the weightwatchers website many times bfore, I like the sound of it and followed it loosely last time I lost weight for our wedding in summer 2006. I like the fact that you can eat anything in moderation. I find sometimes just knowing I can have one or two chocolate digestives, stops me from feeling deprived, then caving in and eating half a packet!

So, how was your day then? Did you manage to resist the biscuits?? If not then there's always tomorrow. I think my main problem has been giving up as soon as I have a 'bad' day. I tended to think "oh well,I've eaten half a pack of biscuits, I may as well have the other half and then go to burger king!!!)

Been shopping for ds' birthday presents today, it's his birthday on the 5th so we have kept busy which has stopped me from obsessing over food.

The bacon and mushroom idea sounds fab, I had no idea that I could get away with eating bacon on a diet but I guess what weight watchers say is true, no food is a sin! I will deffinitely try it tomorrow.

Hope your baby is feeling better. I'm guessing by the fact that you were pinned to the sofa then that's not the case , the weather mus be awful if lo has a temperature. It's been so hot here (Lincoln) and we've loved it but ds hasn't been too impressed!

May be double the eggs and have one not two slices of toast for breakfast and then you're less likely to feel hungry before lunch time. Women tend not to eat enough protein.

foxythesnowfox · 27/07/2008 20:42

Yes I agree, more protein, especially at breakfast. I still use butter rather than marg, can't stand spread. What's the saying? Eat like a king at breakfast, a prince at lunch and a pauper at dinner?

My day was going to test me, and test me it did.

I failed the test!

Still I can redeem myself.

Yes, do NOT give up if a day doesn't go so well. Every day it does go well counts. And thats why we are here after all!

meandmyjoe · 28/07/2008 08:08

Damn! DS up from 3:45am- 5am then up to start the day at 6 so I'm knackered, wanting to snack but I will resist!!!!!

Had a bowl of cereal for breakfast with skimmed milk, was too tired to cook the bacon, egg and mushrooms but now I wish I had! I think I'll have it for lunch instead.

Well, I've got a heck of a lot of gardening and fence painting to get done today as we are having a few family/ friends round on Joseph's birthday in the garden (weather permitting!) That should keep me active and my mind off food.

Sorry you failed the test yeterday! Hope you had a better night and a better day today. x

I sometimes think the best way to feel good (and to lose weight) is to sleep enough, something it's almost impossible to do. None of our 5 slept through the night even once in the first 12 months. When you sleep your body heals, fights germs, relaxes.

I just automatically put my eggs or bacon or whatever on at breakfast time and it only takes a few minutes. It becomes a habit after a while like anything,. I think it takes 4 weeks to break a habit of any type whether that's chocolate biscuits in tea or eating chocolate in the afternoon or drinking water not coffee or whatever.

foxythesnowfox · 01/08/2008 16:35

took me ages to find this thread again!

I'm still here! One of my children was hospitalised with an infection for 4 days, hence my absence.

Back now, a few pounds lighter thanks to the hospital food

Oh, and baby is fine

foxythesnowfox · 03/08/2008 16:13

meandmyjoe - how is it going?

meandmyjoe · 04/08/2008 18:43

Mmmm, not so well I'm afraid Foxy! It's ds' 1st birthday tomorrow and we had a little party for him on Saturday so bought lots of party food in for the guests. Obviously, we over bought thinking it's better to have too much than run out but now I have been pigging out on birthday cake, crisps and apple pies ever since!

I keep thinking that it's his birthday tomorrow, after that I can get back to dieting. I know, I know, just making excuses but I couldn't NOT have a peice of my first child's first birthday cake could I??? (Ahem, perhaps I could have done without the following 4 slices though??!)

Anyway, I'll be back on track on Wednesday, fingers crossed! Daren't even get weiged after the week I've had.

So glad your baby is OK. Must have been awful having them in hospital. i go to peices when ds is ill, I'm useless!

How's your diet going since back to proper food? Hospital food is enough to make anyone lose weight . Hope it's going well for you and you haven't fallen off the wagon as spectacularly as I have.

x

Can I join in?

I'm 5'2" and just over 11stone. I need to lose 2 stone but havent been that weight in about 8 years .

I have 2 DDs - 4 and 1 1/2. I constantly snack with them during the day, often have a rubbish breakfast of toast and marmalade which doesnt fill me up, and dont eat my evening meal until about 8.30pm when the kids are in bed.

Xenia's point about taking 4 weeks to break a habit is a very interesting one.....
