A thread for all us GI diet followers (and anyone interested in it).

If you have any yum recipes or tips to share, please do .

If you have any questions about following a GI diet, there's bound to be a Mumsnetter who knows the answer .

I'll be posting my progress on the thread weekly - if anyone else wants to - great!

Here are some useful links (some posted on other threads, but I thought I'd bring them together here):

I've just bought some Fruisana today and they've changed the GI number on their packaging, from 19 to 23. Still very low, but interesting that it's happened. I suppose lots of things are being re-tested now that the diet is growing in popularity.

pinksofa · 09/02/2005 15:55

i am off the track too at the moment need to refocus have ordered the foster, blair and fooddoctor book not sure if this is gi but bit desperate, got a huge ulcer in my mouth, cold sore think i am getting bug as well and in danger of falling of diet (well i have but not getting back on again) as feeling sorry for myself

Caribbeanqueen · 09/02/2005 16:04

I know what you mean pinksofa, I am feeling sorry for myself too at the moment, tired, feel a cold coming on, dd has cold.

I got on the scales this morning and have put back on 4 lbs, so that annoyed me, although I'm not really surprised.

I'm going into town tomorrow so will try and get the Helen Foster book and I'm also going to make the fruit cake from the Sunday Times. I mad it before and it's very nice and filling.

Desperately need to refocus too.

piffle · 09/02/2005 20:07

Been busy bee today!
From the Sunday times blue berry pancakes recipe I did the blueberries fruisana and cinnamon and added raspberries, cooked it down and use to to flavour fat free natural bio yoghurt. Superb!
Also made oatcakes and the bara brith fruit cake again as I am running to the bikkie tin for snacks after being angelical about meals, also have to ditch the booze, I know that will cause dramatic weight loss if I'm honest!
Tonight we had wraps

Rinse and drain tin of red kidney or pinto beans
Dice onion
heat olive oil soften onion add plenty of cumin, season to taste, add kidney beans and fry/mash them as they soften.
Heat your wraps
Add your own Choice of other fillings, we made guacamole, lettuce, tomato, fat free creme fraiche and chili and tabasco sauce.
delish!!!!!!!!!

Caribbeanqueen · 09/02/2005 20:13

Piffle, that's amazing! I just about managed to make porridge for breakfast today!

The recipe sounds lovely.

You have given me some motivation - I'm off to soak the fruit for the bara brith cake now!

piffle · 11/02/2005 12:21

Did anyone listen to The Food Programme on Radio 4 today? It was all about GI and quite interesting. Might be worth a listen on the website.

Distracted · 13/02/2005 21:56

Am going to try to listen to that on the website - was it good?

By the way, does anyone know if ready brek is just as good as porridge? It is just oats, so should be - but then potatoes vary according to how you cook them so maybe porridge and ready brek are different?

Piffle - I like the sound of your soup - does your recipe book also tell you the calories, or does it just give GI (I assume recipe is low GI)?

Have stayed the same weight this week. Not surprised as from Friday to Sunday, I was eating food from buffets or motorway service stations, plus a very non-gi meal last night.

I have put on 1 lb but have been a bit depressed (comfort eating) and also had people round for dinner on Saturday and still eating leftover cake!

I was all set to try and get back on track this week but dp came home with a bottle of champagne and some chocolate truffle ice cream last night. First time he ever got something for Valentine's and he does it when I'm trying to lose weight!

I'm going to town in a minute to get the books others on here have been talking about, so hopefully will be full of inspiration to start again tomorrow!

piffle · 15/02/2005 16:44

we did the chicken and lentil on friday too, it was superb!

piffle · 15/02/2005 16:46

full of beans soup is
172 kcal
3 gm (1.6 sat fat )
10 gms protein
29% carbohydrate
dh and ds gave in and had mcdonalds on saturday I was not interested and came home and had my bean soup and pita bread!
I was very happy it is really nice!

piffle · 15/02/2005 16:47

the best porridge oats are the scotts porage ones
they are gorgeous
And a porridge question again?

is is ok to have with couple of teaspoons of fruisana and semi skimmed milk?

Caribbeanqueen · 15/02/2005 18:54

The first week when I lost 6 lbs I was having porridge with semi-skimmed milk. I don't use sugar/fruisana, but I put in some sultanas and a sliced banana, that makes it quite sweet.

Distracted · 16/02/2005 14:02

Piffle - thanks for the calories etc. for the soup and the porridge oats tip.

I've been having fruit with my porridge (or ready brek - will switch back to porridge now though). Unfortunately the fruit has been frozen (berries) and it really is VERY sour, so have been putting a teaspoon of fruit sugar on it. But am using half skimmed milk and half water as half a pint of milk does seem like a lot on a diet.

Just looked on my milk cartons and 1/2 pint skimmed has approx. 102 kcal and 0.3g fat, whereas 1/2 pink semi skim has 148 kcal and 4.8g fat.

Still waiting for my GI books from Amazon...

piffle · 16/02/2005 16:32

I make the porridge with mostly water and fully skimmed milk, I could stew some fruit I guess. I detest bananas unless they are mashed on toast. Amd dried fruit is only nice in cakes!
i prefer the berries in yoghurt altough it does make your lips pucker with being so sour!

yoyo · 16/02/2005 20:23

Having a dreadful week as DH is off for the week and likes nothing better than to cook. Unfortunately he is not following low GI guidelines. May have to abandon until I resume preparation of evening meal. I think I overdid the bean-based meals with him last week! Do allright until supper but then.. He made a fantastic lamb curry tonight with all the accompaniments and beer - how could I resist?

Glad to see the rest of you are faring better. I must admit that although I am enjoying having a break from cooking I do find myself feeling quite bloated after a "regular" meal. Anyone else find the same?

PuffTheMagicDragon · 17/02/2005 22:53

Yes, if I'm not roughly sticking to low/med GI foods I feel yuk after a day or so (after last weekend, my stomach and bowels were not best pleased ).

OP posts:
Distracted · 19/02/2005 09:26

I had a bad day yesterday - was starving all afternoon and evening and lots of cravings. Presume my lunch must have been high GI as I've been doing well up until now (haven't got the books yet so not entirely sure about all the high/low stuff yet). I had a Morrisons ready meal, a diet one that I picked up from the reduced counter as it was only 323 calories, which I thought was good for lunch, and I'd feel like I'd eaten more than a sandwich. It was chicken with sweet chilli sauce and noodles - doesn't sound too bad does it?

Of course, now I'm worried that I've eaten this sudan 1 as the meal contained chilli powder and the bl**dy food standards agency website is permanently down so I can't check Isn't that just the way - I NEVER eat ready meals, I can't remember the last time I did and now there's a food scare...

Distracted · 19/02/2005 09:33

Piffle - how many does your bean soup serve? (Finally got round to printing it out and next time I get to the shops will get the tomatoes and canned beans)

piffle · 19/02/2005 10:47

bean soup serves 4, it is dead filling, cracking with a toasted pita too and a bit of creme fraiche!

piffle · 19/02/2005 10:49

a sweet chili sauce is not that great as it contains all the sugars - ready meals are a pretty big no no on GI I suspect! After that food list that came out yesterday too, would not touch one with a barge pole now!
