Nonsense. The best way to fail on a diet is to cut out anything you enjoy and restrict yourself completely.

Work out your TDEE. Measure your calories and eat 500 cals less than your TDEE. You'll lose weight. It's literally science.

This is exactly the kind of advice which has led to an epidemic of obesity in the UK and US.

SilenceInside · 20/05/2026 11:24

What do you actually weigh and how much has your weight gone up over what time frame?

RandomMess · 20/05/2026 11:27

@motuhb I do not know any woman on thyroxine that is slim. UK guidelines are appalling and behind the limits of most other countries

FiloPasty · 20/05/2026 11:32

Are you on HRT?

Drinking even one night a week your body just spends time processing that. If you want to lose weight try a few months completely alcohol free.

Im on Levothyroxine, going on HRT and giving up booze have been life changing for me, lost over 2stone.

I think go down to 2 x PT and do a walk hike on one day and 2 days on pilates/yoga. Some bodies hold onto the stress of hard exercise and softer things work better.

Go and have some lymphatic drainage massages to get things moving.

Change up your food, do a tick list and try and hit 30 different fruits & Veg :)

This is what has worked for me.

rabbitwoman · 20/05/2026 11:37

For me, everything changed when I started using Chatgpt to monitor my calorie intake- you can take photos of the nutrition labels and it will work out cals, give advice, keep track for you - you can discuss strategy and it's highly motivating.

Just be sure to double check all the info it gives you!!!

However, I also monitor my step count and I am highly active, clocking up an average of 20000 steps a day - but spread throughout the day, not just in one concentrated burst.

Foodwise, I upped my protein- started on the protein shakes - and fiber.

About three stone came off and stayed off.

I pay for the £20 a month plan, which is much cheaper than some apps, drugs, gym membership etc.

Also, a good fitness smartwatch- i have a Samsung watch7 - which gives all kinds of data.

It's horrible whwn there seems no solution whwn you're trying sooooo hard. But also, surprising how much difference a few changes - big and small - can make and how easy they are

rabbitwoman · 20/05/2026 11:40

Oh, and by the way - I eat chocolate, nearly every day, I like a drink, meals out, pizza, chips, crisps.

I eat cake when it's someone's birthday.

I am 51 and perimenopausal.

I literally have never been fitter, or as slim fir over 20 years.

£20 for what plan?

Disturbia81 · 20/05/2026 11:58

Can you see muscles developing? Is your shape changing? When I work out a lot I put weight on but it’s the muscle gain and water gain from the process. Also blood weighs heavier. I just stay away from the scales and look at my body shape.

rabbitwoman · 20/05/2026 12:01

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain

I pay £20 a month for my chatgpt subscription.

The free version would work fine but your interactions are limited.

Whereas with a £20 package it's pretty unlimited, AND you can use it for loafs of other things too - just take all the advice and information with a pinch of salt....

rabbitwoman · 20/05/2026 12:16

I really do feel your pain. And the advice I used to get just infuriated me because I used to think 'I have tried EVERYTHING. Every exercise, every diet adaptation' - i even started eating meat again after 23 years a vegetarian. It was so frustrating.

I went to the doctors, I went to the gym, I went to trainers and running clubs - my brother is a fitness instructor, as well as obe of my closest friends, there really was nothing I didn't know about the THEORY, and it felt like I was eating like a bird already.....

But what can I say? Obviously a lot of what I was doing was mindless- start monitoring it and my weight loss happened pretty painlessly. I don't even feel hungry most of the time.

With chatgpt, if you have a nutrition panel on your food, great. If not, you can just take a photo of what you're eating and it will guess, and monitor.

Gives me a weekly roundup. Info on how exercise might be effecting my water retention, inflammation levels, glycogen levels which might effect weight. Looks at other indicators like increased Vo2 levels- i am superior for my age group!!!

Oh, and i highly recommend hyaluronic acid. It draws water away from the surface of the skin into your muscles where it's needed and the difference it has made is huge - I have cheekbones, my tummy went down, I even went down a shoe size!!! I was probably inflamed and retaining water for decades!!!

FiloPasty · 20/05/2026 12:18

@rabbitwoman which product do you use and all over?

AlphaApple · 20/05/2026 12:21

Might be worth taking a pregnancy test just in case!

TBH it sounds medical/medication related if you are really not over-eating (is your portion size appropriate?) and you have no thyroid. Can you go back to your GP and ask for a more in-depth review?

If you are short then it's even harder to maintain a healthy weight in menopause.

Don't discount WLIs. With your healthy lifestyle you could probably stay at the lowest dose and benefit significantly.

rabbitwoman · 20/05/2026 12:22

FiloPasty · 20/05/2026 12:18

@rabbitwoman which product do you use and all over?

Hyaluronic acid in everything!! Moisturiser, serum and body lotion!! But that's topical- i take tablets from Holland and Barrett for internal use, 120mg every other day - when you buy them on special offer it's the cheapest way to do it.

Buscake · 20/05/2026 12:22

OP get an electronic tape measure eg amzn.eu/d/0gyY42Ui

motuhb · 20/05/2026 12:23

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 20/05/2026 11:45

Same. I’m on it and not slim.

I cannot go down this route of not being slim. For me, being slim is everything. I will develop an eating disorder at this rate and take it upon myself to increase my levo

Sleep more, drink more water, and eat 1000 a day for a week. You will lose weight.

SerenitySeeker4 · 20/05/2026 12:25

Add Zumba to your routine.

OrsolaRosso · 20/05/2026 12:27

So what actually is your weight and BMI?

DeedlessIndeed · 20/05/2026 12:27

Right, I am not saying this is healthy or right for you. But sometimes my body needs a bit of a shock when I hit a plateau.
I do one or two days of 500 cal (used to be the 5:2 diet) and light exercise - no gym sessions but don't be sedentary.

But also, are you sure you aren't just building muscle? 5 days a week at the gym doing weights seems likely to be that plus water weight from muscle repair.

NotTodayBeyonce · 20/05/2026 13:02

Eat fewer calories. It’s the only answer.

I can’t personally be arsed with calorie counting and don’t want to obsess over what I eat, so I reduce calories by only eating twice a day - around 11am-12pm, and again around 6-7pm.

TuppenceM · 20/05/2026 13:13

What is your BMI @motuhb ?

you say you look like a fat pig but if you’re working out (imo almost excessively) as much as you are AND have an overwhelmingly healthy diet - then you truly can’t actually be fat.

TuppenceM · 20/05/2026 13:13

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 20/05/2026 11:45

Same. I’m on it and not slim.

I am on 125mg and I am unhealthily underweight

Can you expand on that please?

The reason I ask is that I noticed my weight shot up when I started taking Levothyroxine. There was nothing I could do to control it. My appetite also went through the roof. So basically I stopped taking it. I closely monitor my TSH, T4 and T3 levels and whilst they are outside the normal range, they aren’t too bad.

Since stopping, my weight gain also stopped.

I've always done the opposite and eaten a lot more for 2 days!
But if the OP isn't even tracking calories I don't really know how they can complain about not loosing any weight!
