Calorie counting takeaway choices from KFC, Indian, Chinese etc. What would your order be?

For those of you who are calorie counting

What would your takeaway order be?

Particularly interested in what you'd order from the following:

KFC
Indian takeaway
Chinese takeaway
McDonald's
Burger king

Thanks in advance to any advice/feedback

KFC I would have the chicken but rip the coating off, corn on the cob and gravy. Indian, maybe plain rice, and just whatever chicken curry I fancied (wouldn't worry too much about this as a one off as likely to go straight through you). Chnese, maybe plain rice and a dish with black bean sauce. Mcdonalds, er.. maybe a wrap/chicken nuggets or if low calorie just a hamburger and coffee won't be many calories. Burger King I would just have a spicy bean burger, if they still do them.

Why would a chicken curry go straight through the OP?! I eat a lot of Indian food and I digest it in the normal way…

worcesterpear · 17/05/2026 21:36

Probably just me then! Just seems to happen when I have a curry.

MJFEB2026 · 17/05/2026 21:51

I’d have:

Kfc - 5 hot wings and baked beans, chicken rice box or the twister which is 500
calories.

Indian - quarter tandoori chicken with half portion of boiled rice and salad, chicken shashlick (which is chicken, peppers and onion cooked on a skewer) or the mixed grill which is various meats cooked in the tandoor.

Chinese - plain boiled rice and some sort of chicken stir fried with Pak Choi on the side

McDonalds - hamburger happy meal

Burger King - junior whopper

all with a Diet Coke of course 😂😁

My evening meal usually allows me to have around 700 cals. So I think I'd be able to have something a bit more than that from McDonald's perhaps.

Yes, play around with the options on the app. I always remove the cheese slice (-50cals), and often remove the bun / butter / sauce.

I really love the kid-size thick shakes, but that is about 370 cals vs the 130 cals of a mini mcflurry.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 18/05/2026 07:16

I do think you need to tell yourself these foods are something you will have maybe 3 or 4 times a year if you are serious. But if you are around other people having them, then it’s going to be hard to not join in.

for burger /fried chicken type places, I’d go for a kids meal or a burger without chips, or fried chicken without chips. If they have any veggie sides (corn on the cob, beans etc) I’d order that to bulk up.

Chinese and Indian should be easy as long as you go for non-creamy sauces and veg heavy meals.

But generally, takeaways need to be limited.

Tandoori chicken and boiled rice and salad from the Indian is quite healthy.

I hate KFC but I guess you can get that little burger with one filet in so that's probably only about 250 cals.

McDonald's 6 nuggets is ok. Or hamburger and small fries.

Burger king I guess a hamburger. I loved their spicy bean burger but they discontinued it!

Nothing from the Chinese is healthy really. I don't like the slimy sauces.

Noo, I really liked their spicy bean burger.

We don't have them often.
But if the opportunity arises, I'm not going to sit there with a calorie controlled micro meal while ev everyone else tucks in.

If you're serious about weight loss, you need to figure out how to make normal life events work for you.

Figure out what your order is from these kinda places in advance. Plan accordingly. That kinda thing

Indian food is empty nutritionally? And Chinese food? All the people from those countries must be in very poor health then…

Takeaways bear little comparison to the actual food that you would eat in the countries of origin. In India for example, the food tastes far better and is much less sweet and greasy.

WeeWeeWeeAllTheWayHome · 18/05/2026 08:25

McDonald’s - filet o fish, no fries. This is what I’d eat normally (although I might have two of them normally!) so I’d be happy with that. 380 calories

KFC - zinger chicken salad. I think 500 ish calories but low carb

Its different. But not nutritionally empty

Boxcan · 18/05/2026 13:06

I don't know the menus for those places well, but if I "need" to eat in a fast food place I'd choose McDonald's and have a grilled chicken wrap and fruit (or porridge and fruit at breakfast), which I actually enjoy, and can't really believe is any worse places marketed (and priced) as much nicer.

For more of a dinner, from I'd go Indian and have Dahl and plain steamed rice. Again, what I prefer over fried starters etc.

Edited for a ridiculous number of typos

Happyever1 · 18/05/2026 13:41

Jeez there are some sanctimonious people on here! Eat what you want, just do it in moderation! If I’m having Burger King will have a double bacon cheeseburger and fries, I just won’t have another side and maybe ice cream too like I would have done before, and definitely don’t eat it as much as I used to, but I’m 3.5 stone down and it’s worked for me

Bacon double cheese burger and fries actually comes in at under 800 cals.

So it's definitely workable into a normal day of eating.

For Chinese, I'd probably go for a King Prawn Foo Yung. Nutritionally it's not bad at all - low carb, high protein, not bad on calories

CoastalCalm · 19/05/2026 11:50

I love the rice boxes at KFC

CuriousKangaroo · 19/05/2026 11:56

Ilovemyshed · 17/05/2026 09:48

I wouldn’t. Its food that is empty nutritionally, so why waste the calories 🤷🏽‍♀️

China and India have a combined population of approximately 2.8 billion people. Amazing that this has happened with “food that is empty nutritionally”…

ManyATrueWord · 19/05/2026 11:58

McDonald's I have a chicken burger and a side salad. I really don't like their wraps.

Flamingosareflummoxed · 19/05/2026 11:59

I have two McDonald’s chicken wraps.

I don’t know about China - though I hear that obesity rates are increasing - but India has huge problems with diabetes and cardiovascular disease. You could argue that some of China’s cuisines are healthy, but that’s not the case for much of India, especially those who do not follow a vegetarian diet.

MotherWol · 19/05/2026 15:18

Indian I’d go for something from the tandoor - kebab or tikka with a side of veg/dal and limit the amount of rice/bread.

Chinese - beef in black bean sauce, side of stir fried greens, small amount of rice.

mcdonalds/KFC/Burger King I’d just avoid if possible

There is a significant genetic component to both heart disease and diabetes which likely explains those numbers (although I accept that is not a complete answer). But it is absolute nonsense to suggest that only vegetarian food in India is healthy. Literally over a billion people eat Indian food everyday and are perfectly healthy.

In any event my comment was directed at the PP who suggested that all Indian and Chinese food is “nutritionally empty” which is also absurd.

Ok so I had an India takeaway last Friday night. Between the five of us (2 adults, 3 children) we had:

Chilli king prawns
Lamb tikka (cooked in clay oven) with side salad
Tandoori Chana Palak
Saag aloo
Tarka Dall
Mixed veg bhaji
Pilau rice

You’re telling me that that’s ’nutritionally empty’? There is zero nutrition in prawns, chicken, lamb, tomatoes, spinach, lentils, onions, cauliflower, salad…?
