For those of you who are calorie counting

What would your takeaway order be?

Particularly interested in what you'd order from the following:

KFC
Indian takeaway
Chinese takeaway
McDonald's
Burger king

Thanks in advance to any advice/feedback

If you reduce your calorie intake for the 4 days before & 3 after by 100 cal (can be achieved through extra exercise or less food), you can bank 700 calories & enjoy yourself on the take away. If your goal is fat loss, take away should be occasional, and an occasional planned take away won’t derail your weight-loss, unless you’re otherwise not sticking to plan.

This is what I would do. I count my calories over a week and if we have a takeaway I adjust my calorie intake the other days to inside the calories from the takeaway. We normally have Indian and I stick with chicken or lamb tikka with salad.

Luckydog7 · 17/05/2026 16:35

Yes Indian is very easy to tailor. I usually do tandoori half chicken or chicken tikka. Serve with vegetable sides. Cauliflower bhaji or some do a cauli/potato side. Or a sagg pannier if you are aiming for lower carb/higher fat.

Most Indians do a mixed tandoori grill which is served with salad and yogurt dressing which us a good option.

Also agree with pp. Greek/Turkish is a good option. Chicken kabab with yogurt dressing and salad. Only eat half or none of the pitta bread to reduce further.

In MD I usually order a double cheese burger but don't eat the bread. Ok for keto maybe not for cals. They do a salad but it's really not worth it.

For calorie counting, chinese has boiled chicken in oyster sauce (or other plain sauce) and plain vegetables you can order as a side. Costs about £8 for about 500g chicken and similar vegetables. Small plain white rice or vermicelli/rice noodles or none at all if you don't want carbs.

McDonald’s do a great grilled chicken wrap. I have it with a salad and balsamic dressing.

I wouldn’t. Its food that is empty nutritionally, so why waste the calories 🤷🏽‍♀️

Indian food is empty nutritionally? And Chinese food? All the people from those countries must be in very poor health then…

Owlmoonstar · 17/05/2026 17:38

We don't eat takeout very often. Once a month maybe.

Im just curious to see what others have, so I have some ideas for when the next opportunity arises.

Thanks for all the replies, it's helpful.

Nuggets at McDonald’s

boneless banquet at kfc (without chips)

dry chicken tikka for curry or a tomato based curry if they have one

not really a fan of Chinese food but would just have a main without rice

Owlmoonstar · 17/05/2026 17:55

Dieting is bloody depressing sometimes.

One stone left to go... 🫠

With the cost of a takeaway nowadays if I am having one I am enjoying it!

Favourite is chinese, so I have 1/2 portion of fried rice, and a full portion of my usual grilled beef/veg in hot peking sauce using a slotted spoon/and tapping it to serve with less sauce than usual. I'd avoid deep fried chicken balls/thick sauces.

For indian I actually enjoy a grilled chicken kebab with salad/pita/chilli/pakora sauce so I'd have that with a couple of bits of veggie pakora and a bit of poppadom/spiced onions when dh is having a curry.

KFC/McD/BK I wouldn't go out of my way to have as I don't really enjoy them.

I keep (roughly) within my calories over the week, with less midweek so I can enjoy a takeaway or a homemade indulgent meal at weekend if I want one.

MakingPlans2025 · 17/05/2026 18:08

If your aim is to actually accurately track the calories then go for Burger King or KFC or MacDonalds as the calories are on the menus. You’ll be guessing from an average Indian or Chinese. But better nutrition probably to go for tandoori chicken plain rice and salad.

ILombardiallaPrimaCrociata · 17/05/2026 18:13

You have posted in Weight Loss, so I am assuming you want to lose weight.

Marinade some chicken breasts in the flavouring of your choice and pan fry it in minimal oil.

Serve with steamed vegetables - with Asian dressing or Greek yoghurt, or a really nice salad.

@Owlmoonstarlast stone always seems to take so long!

OP, the soups from Chinese takeaway might be good? They’re v packed with lovely flavour but I can’t imagine they’re particularly calorific. (Not an expert though!)

I expect they would be yes, I'm not sure if a soup would do it for me though from a Chinese takeaway.

A quick bit of digging suggests that prawns with broccoli is a good choice. I can imagine that too as broccoli is quite filling, plus it's good at absorbing sauces so would taste great I think!

You can speak to an Indian takeaway and ask them use less oil then it’s all fine no butter on the naan - ask for a thinner bread like a roti? Just ask them their grilled options

Renohouse · 17/05/2026 18:47

I'd recommend a rice box from KFC

CoverLikelyZebra · 17/05/2026 18:53

I have to get lunch at KFC once a month for complex reasons I won't explain here, and I get a zinger rice bowl which is 543 kcal. If I am a bit hungrier I also get a corn cobbette.

Last time we got a takeaway it was Lebanese and I got a half-chicken rice meal which I ate about half of the chicken and half of the rice and all the salad, then had the other half next day with more salad from the fridge.

Other takeaways are too rare to have a "usual" but I tend to think that if it's a rare special occasion I will eat whatever I want. A single meal doesn't make that much difference if your overall eating habits are healthy and it doesn't happen very often.

Fu yung is also an option from the Chinese (similar to an omelette)

McDonald's I have a kids happy meal - fish burger (no bun, add cucumber & lettuce). Water plus fruit bag & a mini smarties mcflurry.

My evening meal usually allows me to have around 700 cals. So I think I'd be able to have something a bit more than that from McDonald's perhaps.

I would do nandos. Grilled chicken breast, salads.

ThisSunnyBee · 17/05/2026 20:43

3 of them are barely classed as food though
