Naturally thin habits

Naturally thin people… if you had to contribute your naturally healthy weight to 3 things.. what would they be? Eg eating same things, walking everywhere etc

Doing some form of exercise every single day, even just a 30 minute walk
Don't eat anything classed as low fat
Eat a balanced diet & don't tell yourself you 'can't' have something as it will just make you want it more

I think I could be described as naturally slim (not thin as I think they’re different) always have been. My mother’s side of the family were all thin. I have a very active lifestyle, rarely sit for long. I don’t drink but have a very sweet tooth. I still fit into clothes I wore in my 20’s and I’m now 50.

Now I’ve hit menopause I am carrying a little more weight around my middle more of a small 10 than an 8 now. I eat 3 meals a day and snacks and pretty much eat what I want and have never dieted.

I am sporty and active and cook from scratch but in my opinion it’s down to genetics.

I like the sound of your eating plan @SpringAndSunshineIsHere

Ha! Look I got pain for being a 'skinny bitch' for years. Skinny bitch was almost a mantra I heard.

So. Now everyone can be skinny, amazing. I got abuse for years for being 'skinny', seems desirable though? So why the abuse? I feel a bit spiky about it anld why wouldn't I?

Trying being "fat bitch" and see how much you like that instead.

Iwearaberet · 18/04/2026 22:17

When I was naturally thin I just didn't think about food, now retatrutide does it's thing

I never called anyone a 'fat bitch' or indeed
commented on their weight, I feel very neutral about what people weigh.

As I said, I feel a bit spiky about previously obese people, 'THAT I KNOW' who had plenty to say about my thinness, who now, think this a conversation they need to be involved with.

Do you not see how that may be slightly irritating?

I think (as someone who's previously had an ED) a lot of these habits sound more like controlling what/when you eat rather than being naturally thin. I think most naturally thin people are genetically so.
Of course some people have bigger appetites than others, and some people will be more active than others by habit or choice but im not fully convinced that people who are eating 1 meal a day of mostly vegetables, and walking 30k steps are "naturally" thin or doing that to stay thin IYSWIM.

I have a colleague who is naturally thin. There is almost nothing she doesnt eat. All her family are naturally thin. She eats slowly, so probably doesnt eat huge amounts but does almost no exercise. Conversely my mum was naturally fairly fat. All her family were, ive seen pictures of her and her brother, when they were young children (in the 1950s) and they look chubby/overweight. They didnt grow up on upfs, didnt own a car, walked or cycled everywhere...and yet she was overweight for most of her life.

I don’t think it’s genetic, I think it’s learned behaviour. I’ve noticed that fat people not only have fat kids, they also tend to have fat pets!

Kids are learning portion sizes from their parents, and parents who give their kids huge portions or constant snacks are getting their bodies used to excess calories.

@NCfortheeatingdisorderboard I found the comments about slim people not having as much food noise, very interesting. But it reminded me of the Minnesota Starvation Study. During WW2, some conscientious objectors volunteered to participate in a study on the effects of starvation (rampant in Europe at the time) and one of the observations was the tendency to become obsessed with food after restricting calories. I wonder if food noise, might partly be created by dieting.

I find a glass of water with rehydration salts helps with migraine or a pinch of salt under my tongue if that’s not available.

My point is that fat people face metric fucktons of abuse, routinely, which is extremely unpleasant. The grass always seems greener beyond the fence.

Having been on both sides of this particular fence, I can assure you the insults and judgment hurt just as much whichever side you happen to be on.

It's worth remembering everyone has their own shit going on. Everyone has their own insecurities. Just be nice, and if you can't manage that, it's best not to say anything at all.

I eat whatever I want but not much of it. I eat 3 small high nutritious main meals a day and don’t snack much in between. I don’t eat anything after 6pm. I don’t exercise, walk quite a bit as I don’t drive.

I think the main issue for people struggling with weight is genetics, too much food, too many processed carbs, large portions, snacking and eating late into the evening/night

Both are awful, why would you think being called fat is any worse than being called skinny? Flip sides of the same coin and please don't tell me that the people calling me skinny are jealous, they're really not...

bedfrog · 29/04/2026 10:28

I just don't think about food unless I'm hungry. And I don't connect it to any emotions. If I'm sad or happy or celebrating I won't turn to food.

I do enjoy cooking and eating good food though but I have to have an appetite for it.

No "food noise", I've never had that.

Everyone is different but my top three things are as follows.

Do not eat after 6 pm. Clean your teeth, then that's it until breakfast.

Move a lot. Walk, run up the stairs, put effort into whatever you are doing. Don't sit or more than 20 minutes without doing a one or two minute burst of exercise.

I genuinely like celery and cucumber as snacks. It's that crunchy texture.

I think your last point about crunchy things is very relevant. There is a sensory element to it. I hate crunchy things especially wet crunchy. I don't like eating cold food. Many nutrient rich foods are crunchy, most protein rich foods are refrigerated and cold to eat. That in itself forms a little obstacle before taste comes into it. Its well documented that UPFs that encourage addiction tend to be soft to bite and room temperature.
