Human being diet

after trying what seems like hundreds of diets over the years, I have decided to try this one. It fits in with my lifestyle as I eat a lot of vegetables anyway.
i've ordered a second hand HBD book, which should give me more hints and tips and more importantly recipes, especially for phase 1 as I struggle to find many which don't have any olive oil. The book probably won't arrive for a few days and I would like to start asap.
I would appreciate it if anybody could at least give me a starting point on recipes for phase 1.
Thank you (living in hopes!)

I borrowed the book from the library last year.

I think there was a part which seemed VERY restrictive. I may have misremembered but I never got started with it. Maybe because I’m a vegetarian?

good luck

Here’s the permitted foods for phase 1. Basically any veg you’d expect. Make a batch of soup to eat.

I recommend the HBD cookbook. Some good recipes which save you from boredom.

And if you can do stick with it. It worked for me when nothing else did and now after a year bad habits have crept back in but very little weight has gone back on - it’s like it reset my body to a lower weight.

thank you for posting this picture. It's very helpful until I get the book. onwards and upwards (hopefully !)
Interesting about the reset . I think we can get used to a healthier eating pattern.

I did this and lost a lot of weight very quickly but fell off the wagon inevitably.

Phase 1 you start with a dose of Epsom salts and for the first two days it’s only vegetables. Unlimited quantities but no oils or fats and no protein. So salads, soups or veggie stews without any complex carbs.

Phase 2 you add protein in and some carbs but no fats. You have to leave 5 hours between meals and can only drink water in between. No milk in tea or coffee. The protein is measured and the amount you can eat depends on your starting weight. Phase 2 lasts 14 days

phase 3, you can have olive oil and a wider range of carbs. Still fast for 5 hours between meals. One cheat meal per week when you can have anything including alcohol and sugar. Phase 3 lasts 10 weeks or until you reach goal if that is longer.

If you slip in phase 1 or 2 you have to start again including the Epsom salts which is a big deterrent. If you slip in phase 3 you just pick yourself up and continue with phase 3.

there is a thriving insta community where lots of recipes for each phase get posted. Just follow people with hbd in their names.

This isn’t a meal she can eat in the first two weeks of HBD however which is the specific question she asked. Granted that it is a healthy and balanced meal in its own right and suitable for a calorie controlled or low fat diet.

just one question, are carrots allowed in phase 1? I ask because they have some sugar in them, don't they?

OP posts:
pusspuss9 · 11/03/2026 08:02

I bought an oil spray bottle from Amazon for use when some olive oil is allowed. I think it will enable me to cut down quite a lot on the usual small amounts I try to use anyway.

Raw carrots are allowed in phase one if I remember rightly. But I wouldn’t get too hung up on it. The bigger thing to think about is what you’re gonna eat for P2 . Phase One is over in two days, and frankly I found it really easy just eating tons of raw vegetables at every meal for a couple of days. In phase 2 capers were my friend as they added that interesting taste that I thought I really needed in my salads.

While I get that you’re really keen to get going, I can’t recommend enough waiting until you’ve read the book, annotated it and added loads of Post-it notes so you have a really clear idea about what your plan of attack is going to be

Thank you for your answer.
Received notice that the book is on it's way.
I do like capers, I've been meaning to get some for ages but forget each time I'm shopping.
I'm planning to drink fresh ginger slices in hot water so not sure if that's allowed.
I have a heart rhythm pblm (discovered when I got an apple watch) so I had already checked on line about various food that I should eat or more importantly should not eat to keep as healthy as possible.
Agree with you about the raw foods and salads. Just as a side note and not wanting to derail this, have you tried pumpkin oil as a dressing? It's amazing - but not when on HBD.

Yes carrots are allowed - both raw and cooked. The first two days are so restrictive that any veg other than potatoes and sweet potatoes are fine I think

pusspuss9 · 13/03/2026 15:55

The cookbook has arrived and I'm ploughing through it.
I'm on last day of phase 1 and frankly it's a bit of a struggle so looking forward to tomorrow when I can have some protein and an apple.
Thank you all for being so helpful and for taking the time to guide me into this.

The deleted posts were all off topic so I guess that is why they were deleted. But don’t worry, the you haven’t missed anything relevant because they are gone.

And yes, you drink the Epsom salts and they taste as vile as you might think and have the consequences you might expect!

@pusspuss9 I did this diet a few years ago and played at it, now and again, since.
It was very effective when I did it properly and it was only when I was into Phase 3 that the wheels came off.

I’m planning to do it again starting on Monday. I’ll only have 2 weeks to do it to the book, as then I’m away for a few days and food will be out of my hands, (to a degree).

Basically, I am planning to keep to the core principles of the diet where I can, and not be silly when I can’t!

It's great that you managed phase 2 last time. you must have been so pleased with yourself. I'm on my first day into phase 2 and have looked up frying without oil. There is a lot of info on line about 'frying' with water. I've seen this method suggested in the past and immediately dismissed it as awful but the more I see it the more tempted I am to try it.
The two weeks you have at home before your holiday will at least give you time to get the most difficult part over with.

If you have an air fryer @pusspuss9 just use that with no added oil. It’s much easier than dry frying in the top of the stove. And resign yourself to no cooked onions for those two weeks as I’ve never found a way of cooking these to be mellow without using oil.

thanks for the info and continued encouragement. It really helps. At the moment I'm feeling a bit sick after messing up the onions. Hopefully the air fryer will arrive on Monday
