after trying what seems like hundreds of diets over the years, I have decided to try this one. It fits in with my lifestyle as I eat a lot of vegetables anyway.
i've ordered a second hand HBD book, which should give me more hints and tips and more importantly recipes, especially for phase 1 as I struggle to find many which don't have any olive oil. The book probably won't arrive for a few days and I would like to start asap.
I would appreciate it if anybody could at least give me a starting point on recipes for phase 1.
Thank you (living in hopes!)

What's the point of the Epsom Salts? I've looked on the website but can't see any info about that.

The rationale given is that you clean your digestive tract out of partly digested food and waste so that you start the eating plan with a completely clean slate

Ah OK - so it's a laxative/purging agent then?

Thanks.

This is the only diet that has ever worked for me. I didn’t take the Epsom salts but still lost weight. Good luck!

Thank you Katrina for this very helpful advice.
just one question, are carrots allowed in phase 1? I ask because they have some sugar in them, don't they?

All vegetables have ‘sugar’. Sugar is the monosaccharide (mono meaning 1 - saccharide being a sugar unit) molecule that makes up carbohydrate which, for most veg, is the majority of their non water weight - both chains of polysaccharides (many-sugars) and Di- (2-sugars and mono saccharides (1-sugars). Fibre is technically sugars too though of course we can’t digest them.

@pusspuss9 how are you getting on? I’m planning on starting Tuesday…

I stuck religiously this until day 14 and then fell off the wagon a bit. However I'm restarting phase 2 today as well , so will accompany you on this journey if it's ok with you.
I have some learnings so far, which I think are more valuable than the weight loss which at 5kg has been amazing.
So in no particular order:
I learned to like fruit which in the past has usually been either too sour or too full of sugar. I freeze some bio blueberries and grapes and if I feel like something sweet after meals I just take one or two out of the freezer and they satisfy me.

I learned to recognise when I have had enough and don't need to eat up what's left on my plate. I know I can either save it in the fridge or throw it away. I've learned it's ok to dispose of it and not to prepare the same again. In the end there are things I won't crave again.

I learned to like black coffee
I learned that I don't need wheat or dairy or sugar and it's already made a difference to my health
I bought a good oil spray bottle which I fill myself with olive oil and it's good for many uses to really cut down oil use to the bare minimum.
I bought a spiralizer and an air fryer to try more variety in how I prepare things, especially vegetables.

Most importantly I was strict with myself and (mostly!) didn't give in at the beginning when I sometimes thought 'sod this for a game of soldiers!) but gave my head a wobble and thought 'you're made of stronger stuff than this - which I now know I am.
I had a reasonably healthy lifestyle before this so eating a lot of veggies did not come as a nasty surprise.

whishing you and all others reading this much luck and even joy going forward.

Place marking to read properly. Another one who has tried so many diets and bought so many different books!

pusspuss9 · 24/03/2026 08:40

just to add, I shopped in the morning when I wasn't needing sweet stuff and was able to easily walk straight past the 'sweetie' isles . Were I to have shopped in the afternoon, I may well have ben tempted to buy stuff like chocolate , which I would have broken up into squares and froze ready to savour each square slowly in my mouth.

sorry about all these bits and pieces, but I also now drink a lot of a few slices of fresh ginger in hot water. that also fills a space...

Hi, I did the first 2 phases of hbd (minus Epsom salts!) but came undone at phase 3. I found black coffee very hard though! I think this diet does have some useful really healthy habits built in which is great, my one real question mark is the advice to not do much exercise until phase 3/4- this seems to go against everything being advised for people undertaking rapid weightloss in terms of preserving muscle. Skipping it for 2 day phase 1, fair enough but after that a little strength training wouldn’t be stressful. Also be careful with cinnamon as the sweeter cassia version is toxic in excess - typical!
