Completed my first two days of not out of control eating

Gave myself December off as I have been counting calories for pretty much all of 2025. No jabs (with success). Well that was a mistake. Found it so difficult to get back to normal, balanced eating. Waking up and grabbing leftover pudding became quickly ingrained 😳.

I have finally managed to do two days in a row of being in a deficit and eating plenty of fruits and veg. Only 10 days behind schedule. But I’m so glad I actually have been able to do it. Starting is always the hardest.

I do not want to completely undo all that hard work!

Scary how quickly those bad habits return.

Just wanted to share as I was getting very anxious.

Good luck to anyone else returning to ‘normal’ after a Christmas blow out.

Ive definitely gained weight but it can be lost! And it’s only 6 or 7 pounds and not 25! Reckon that can be off in a month or two if I don’t do anything ridiculous

Well done. Ive been easing my way back into more sensible eating, so I've been getting more or less back to normal, but today was my first day of recording calories on MFP (for full accountability) <sigh>

WhatDidYouMakeOfThat · 12/01/2026 18:31

Well done on resetting.

I’ve really struggled to get back to “normal” after the Christmas indulgence. Today has been a more balanced day of eating and my body feels so much better for it.

GrannyClanger · 13/01/2026 15:29

Same here! I’ve only put on about 3lbs but that means I’m complacent about calorie counting and getting back on it. But I am trying. Haven’t logged into MFP but I suppose I should to get back into some better eating habits. We can do this!

I was really ill before Christmas and lost my sense of taste, so I’ve been comfort eating a bit to make up for it I think! Need to rediscover some healthier choices which I can still enjoy. I’m also getting back into some regular workouts and runs.

Proty · 13/01/2026 15:43

Well done all! I was half convinced that was me done for tbh! was supposed to start eating more balanced from the 2nd. Only ten days late….it was hard with all the crap left in the house. Thankfully all the choc and cheese has mostly been eaten.

It’s shocked me how hard I viewed eating soup for lunch instead of my new go to of cheese and leftover panini.

Not brave enough to jump on scale but my calfs look much bigger and those don’t normally gain weight straight away :/. I will not make the same mistake of effectively giving myself a month of next year!

I find it hard to stop snacking unless I have a decent breakfast.

MagpiePi · 13/01/2026 16:07

Well done everyone for getting a grip, (including me!)

I find I’m ok for about 5 days being super controlled and then it is the weekend or something and it all goes out of control, or else I go back into the ‘just one biscuit won’t hurt’ type behaviour. Grrr

WhatDidYouMakeOfThat · 13/01/2026 20:14

Ok, so today makes day 2 of eating like a normal person would. I feel so much better for it in terms of my energy levels and digestive system but am definitely still craving foods that I wouldn’t usually!

I feel like if I can make it through this week, I’ll have a stronger chance of continuing.

I completely sympathise with the weird cravings. I am certainly missing all the baked treats I got used to over Christmas. Fruit and Greek yoghurt is a very poor substitute.

I’ve been telling myself losing weight is hard, but staying the same (ie overweight) is FAR harder.

well done everyone. I think we’ve all been there when we haven’t made the changes in time after a little hiccup. Course corrections are much easier than starting from scratch

That's interesting, what do you have for breakfast?

Gettingbysomehow · 13/01/2026 22:19

Well done its really tough trying to stop doing that. Even with the jabs Ive struggled and Im dreading coming off them.

I just don’t allow snacks in the house that I like. So all the crisps are bbq and cheese and onion flavoured. Have been filling up on stewed fruit and yoghurt when I get peckish. That is my go to snack for now when I need a sweet hit. Bit of honey. Not exactly leftover sticky toffee pudding but it’s better than nowt! Lots of coffee with Stevia too.

Keep going. We should all be so proud that we haven’t completely abandoned our goals!

I am trying to cut down on cholesterol (and lose weight!) so I usually have 2 Oatibix with a sprinkling of bran and fruit - an apple, blueberries - any fruit that is handy really - and skimmed milk. No sugar (but I haven't got a sweet tooth anyhow). A couple of big cups of tea.
Seems to keep me full up.

MagpiePi · 14/01/2026 13:11

The only way I can feel not hungry during the morning is to not have any breakfast. I will feel hungry at 11:30 but a cup of coffee will see me through to lunch time. It doesn't seem to matter if I have my usual porridge with seeds or a bowl of greek yoghurt and fruit, I will be looking around for a snack at about 10 o'clock.

Proty · 14/01/2026 23:11

Everyone still on track? I did well today besides the fact that I caved and had a slice of homemade bread. Was trying to no carb for a few days to get back into the swing of things. But definitely hit my deficit so that’s a win.

I’m still here!

I haven’t stepped on the scale because I definitely don’t think that will help my motivation 😬. But I’m eating well and the cravings are gone.

Well done! It will never cease to amaze me how much easier it gets a few days in. Starting really is the hardest bit.

Im in the exact same position as you. Cravings have gone (thank God). Not thinking about what pudding is left/if we have ingredients to make x y z. I was honestly out of control!

And I’m also not stepping on the scales right now. I can tell it won’t make me happy from the way my jeans are digging in!

Are you following any plan in particular?

OP posts:
GrannyClanger · 16/01/2026 09:16

I’ve been doing a 5 day “kickstart” which has definitely helped get me back into some better habits. I’ve done terribly tbh but have at least been drinking more water and having healthier snacks. Scales have gone down too, so I’m just focusing on getting those workouts done! Will do lots of meal prep at the weekend so I’ve got good things ready to grab when I’m hungry.

@Proty well done on hitting your deficit that always feels great!

I am struggling my self i have got my self to a lower bmi of 23 and but since xmas i just eat rubbish today i have started well so fingers crossed ... half my issue is i drink more calories than i consume in food etc ( ie coffees )

Enrichetta · 16/01/2026 09:27

Scary how quickly those bad habits return. …

I agree with both your points. I have been eating healthily and exercising seriously for many years and really thought I had it sussed and under control. But then I injured myself. And then Christmas happened…

oh my! I think I gained about 8-10 pounds. The first week or two of returning to intermittent fasting and cutting out refined carbs and sugar were not easy. But having an established framework of what I needed to do really helped and I’m back to my usual routine. 4 pounds off already….. I’m getting there!

Can you switch to lower calorie coffees as a compromise? I use those late sachets from Kenco. I just add water. It still manages to taste sweet and creamy. Pretty good for what it is.

I mean it’s nowhere near as good as the latte my machine makes but it does the job and is roughly 68 calories I think. My homemade lattes were closer to 190 if I remember correctly

Hope this doesn’t come across as patronising as I’m sure you’ve thought about it yourself :)

very well done. It’s so easy to keep fobbing off starting healthier habits. Especially in those first days when your body is adjusting. I had actual body and head aches on day 2 of going cold turkey. Woke up in the middle of the night and took an ibuprofen!

I must have said I’ll start tomorrow at least 8 times THIS YEAR. It was seeing the size of my calfs in my wellies that really put the fear into me. They were looking slim pre December!

Well done on the weight loss. I find that once the the weight starts coming off the motivation switches to that. And that feeling then trumps eating that Kit Kat.

Well done again!

I’m still going strong.

Have started back at the gym after a couple of months off for various reasons including a niggling injury that is so much better after a rest. I’m using teeny tiny weights that aren’t even what I would have warmed up with before, but I want to get back in the habit and not aggravate my injury so the ego is left at the door.

Enrichetta · 16/01/2026 14:44

Thanks, @Proty - and good luck with your weight loss journey.

what motivates me more than anything is doing my workouts first thing in the morning as I simply do not want to undo my good work by eating stupid stuff.

Sunshineandrainbow · 16/01/2026 23:12

Not a bad week here. Also not stepping on the scales as it sends me into a spiral.

Have enjoyed big plates of veg for dinner with vege sausages and it was really satisfying.

Have also taken carrot sticks and hummus to work to give me something to crunch on. I have never done this so enjoying the novelty!

WhatDidYouMakeOfThat · 17/01/2026 10:09

You’re so right about starting being the hardest part and the cravings going fairly quickly. Why is it so difficult to remember this in the moment!!

I’m not following a particular plan, just eating nourishing meals and balanced snacks. I don’t cope well with feeling deprived at this time of year - it’s so cold and grey - so I’m not focusing on reducing the amount I’m eating, just making sure they’re balanced choices.
