BMI not high enough for GLP1

sophiekw · 18/11/2025 19:13

Does anyone here have advice on how to get GLP1 meds privately if your BMI isn’t high enough? I just want a small dose to drop a few pounds and maintain that state.

Why would you take a medication that isn’t clinically indicated for you?

EdinaTheConfessor · 18/11/2025 19:47

What is your BMI?

Dropping a few pounds should be achievable through diet.

I've taken Mounjaro as someone right on the BMI borderline - they have been life changing and I've lost over 2.5 stone to get from BMI 30 to BMI 23 but absolutely not something you should do just for a few pounds. I've got life long health implications from taking mounjaro - I don't regret it but it's not a 100% safe 'quick fix'.

You still have to meet the requirements when going through a private pharmacy.

What's your BMI?

Surely a few pounds doesn't require WLI?

The less you weigh, the lower your TDEE so the lower your calories need to be to lose weight so I'd imagine it would be helpful!

I lost 2 stone without WLI, I then got stuck about half a stone into the obese category so the first bit was easier!

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 18/11/2025 20:05

This just is not what its for... but you know that... so 🤷🏻‍♀️

If i was 7lbs overweight i wouldn't touch the stuff

Moontwigdotcom · 18/11/2025 20:07

Try quitting sugar, once you get through the initial withdrawal and cravings, it cuts food noise and you do lose weight.

OK but you'd already achieved a huge weight loss before WLI to shift the remainder. I think that's a bit different.

If your BMI doesn’t meet the prescription criteria for this obesity treatment then you will be hard pressed to get someone to legitimately prescribe to you via the online pharmacies. Or in person at a high street pharmacy that does weight loss. But at least you’re not obese and don’t need a prescription medication to treat that condition.

Mepp · 18/11/2025 20:26

Online pharmacies prescribe too, but obviously don't do the measurements or data themselves because they never meet you. You report yourself and share a photo.

If you're close to the right BMI (which is lower if you've got other certain issues alongside) and embellish to say that's where you are, I think you'd be given the benefit of the doubt. If you're obviously hardly even overweight, you're unlikely to get any.

MrsArcher23 · 18/11/2025 20:28

It’s a medication for people with obesity. It’s not a Slimming World drop 7lbs for Christmas fix. How close to 30 is your BMI?

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 18/11/2025 20:30

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 18/11/2025 20:31

What do you weigh OP?

Arlanymor · 18/11/2025 20:31

If you don't meet the prescription criteria, you don't meet the prescription criteria - that goes for all prescribers, private or otherwise. Why would people risk losing their licence to practice because a patient refused to accept that the medication was not intended for someone with their BMI? There are clinical guidelines. You might not like it, but that's reality.

Hey @Clartzilla , do you mind me asking what life long health implications you have from taking MJ? Is it specifically from taking the meds?

(I’m a a fairly long term MJ user, coming up to a year). Just wondering if it is something I should follow up too.

Thanks!

RuncibleSpoons · 18/11/2025 20:33

I was not fat enough to qualify, so I knocked off 2 inches from my height.

Thebigonesgetaway · 18/11/2025 20:33

Op, are you avoiding the question, or are you busy, people can’t help unless you say bmi.

Clartzilla · 18/11/2025 20:38

It messed up my gallbladder. I'm now waiting for surgery to have it removed. With gallbladder issues there is really high risks of pancreatitis as well.

I wouldn't wish a gallbladder attack on my worst enemy and apparently a pancreatitis is ten times worse. The gallbladder pain is like giving birth without pain relief but you have to do it time and time again with no warning and you can't eat fat/dairy/spice etc for the 18 months - 2 years it takes you to get to the top of the surgery waiting list and there is no guarantee afterwards things will improve.

I absolutely agree about the agony of gallbladder pain. I'm on MJ but very very lucky to have had my gallbladder removed 15 years ago. It was the closest pain to childbirth I have ever experienced.

SilenceInside · 18/11/2025 20:42

Always there are people that post on these types of threads recommending how to obtain prescription-only medication fraudulently. Never ceases to amaze me. Happy to ignore the fact that someone who is very definitely not obese or even very overweight should not be acquiring and using a POM that is used to treat obesity. Because the risks exist and there are no health benefits to be had from taking this medication if you are not obese, or significantly overweight with weight related health conditions.

Clartzilla · 18/11/2025 20:44

Technically it's not the mounjaro that caused the gallbladder issues its the rapid weightloss. But the rapid weightloss was caused by the mounjaro, I was finding it impossible to lose weight without it and it was extremely effective.

I lost 2.5 St over 6 months which was rapid enough to feck up my gallbladder

FurForksSake · 18/11/2025 20:44

Most prescribers will want pictures, video call with you on scales and some sort of height verification. I doubt you’ll manage to get them unless you look significantly overweight and can find a way of getting round the scales and height thing. You can probably get around the height by an inch or so, but not more.
