Sustainable and not overly ambitious weight loss 2025: 1 stone by June - anyone care to join?

OMGitsnotgood · 02/01/2025 17:10

Happy New Year!
I started this thread back in June in an attempt to lose a stone by the end of September. I wanted to do this through making better food choices and exercising more, rather than following a rigid diet. (Read the old OP for more details). Posting made me feel more accountable and made me rethink my eating after a calorific day (or week! )
I didn’t lose a stone but did continue to lose weight slowly, gaining some weeks but overall a reasonable loss.

Time to refocus after the excesses of December, and it would be great to have some company.

Welcome back to those who kept me motivated on the old thread and welcome to anyone new - you don’t need to ask to join, just introduce yourself and tell us what you are trying to achieve, and hopefully the encouragement and support we can give each other will help us all.

This is my info, feel free to post whatever helps you to keep track and use this thread as you see fit.

Height: 5’4
Heaviest ever: c 13st 4
Weight June 24:: 12st 8
Lightest since June 24: 11 st 11
Current weight: 12 stone 1/2lb - which is hardly surprising, i didn’t watch what I ate or drank for most of December. I think some of that will come off easily when I refocus. Going to have a few days away visiting various friends so expect that won’t help but I don’t want to be able to enjoy those times, and be extra careful at home .

My short term goal is to get back under 12 stone by the end of January..

My dream would be a stone by June. I'm not optimistic but a reasonable goal to aim for.

I go to gym classes but fortunately I can do that without getting up at 4am, I really couldn’t do that.

We’ve got amazing weather forecast for next week and I always find it easier to eat less and more healthily in the heat. Anyone else? Drops again tbe following week so need to make the most of it.

Minilebowski · 25/04/2025 16:17

Hi, I hope it's OK for me to join at this late stage. I'm 69.7 kg, 5 ft 6. I was lucky when I was younger and never had to watch my weight but everything changed when I hit my 40's! Fed up of my clothes not fitting. I'm terrible for snacking (mainly on bread - my husband jokes that I always have a butter knife in my hand!!) Over the last two weeks, I cut out bread completely, as well as pasta and potatoes and stopped snacking between meals. I definitely feel less sluggish. I have an active job (forest school) and do at least 10k steps each day. I go to the gym at least 3 times per week. I'd love some diet tips. Feeling a bit down today like I'm never going to lose any weight...

OMGitsnotgood · 26/04/2025 15:45

Hi @Minilebowskiand welcome. It certainly does get harder as we get older.
I also love bread and eat far too much of it. The butter or margarine doesn’t help either.I am trying a ‘make better choices’ approach, though am not doing too well at the moment! So as much as I love toast for breakfast, I am trying to have weetabix or porridge most days, with toast as an occasional treat, or a filling homemade soup for lunch instead of sandwiches everyday. I also have a weakness for cheese, so I just don’t buy it most of the time, other than cheddar for cooking but keeping those dishes to a minimum. I don’t want to calorie count but it is good to have an awareness of the relative calorie contents of different foods. But it’s not easy, I’d much rather have a bag of crisps than carrot sticks, so again just don’t buy them other than very occasionally eg if we are having a picnic.

Minilebowski · 26/04/2025 16:07

Hi, thank you for your reply. I also love cheese!! I have two sons who are home now and again and it's hard to ignore the snacks I get in for them while they are here! I do also love weetabix and porridge and had sort of forgotten about so that's a useful tip!

jeomeollibyeoldul · 28/04/2025 09:19

had a lovely weekend in london. back on it today. got some new teas to try, so looking forward to that, and will have to scrounge some stuff up to make from the kitchen today as haven't done the shopping yet.

lovely weather today -- i find that makes it easier to eat well.

Hoolahoophop · 30/04/2025 10:42

I am struggling now with fitting in cooking and eating. My children's after school diaries are so complicated to manage that we are eating things like fish fingers and croquets, waffles, chips more often than I would like, or picky tea with sausage rolls and bread and salad. Occasionally we are managing freezer batch cooked pasta sauces and chili, but between fussy eaters and hectic struggles every night is a fight to see what I can find in the freezer than can be on the table in less than 20 mins.

like @jeomeollibyeoldul the summer makes it feel more acceptable to have salad more often and they are at least quick!

jeomeollibyeoldul · 30/04/2025 13:35

dont feel bad @Hoolahoophop ! making sure your family is fed is a difficult, neverending task especially with all the other crap we have to deal with nowadays. nothing wrong with fish fingers and chips.

ive been drinking all the new tea ive got as a treat in the mornings. tried the mango one today but didnt love it -- was a bit artificial. other than that have been eating very healthy, but today im having crispy prawns. only managed to do about 20 mins of exercise yesterday so hoping to do better on that today. already did some cleaning which helps. trying my best to remain on top of everything but am feeling very tired, maybe its the heat again.

BlueberryFlapjack · 01/05/2025 12:41

Hi all, Hope I'm ok to join - @Hoolahoophop mentioned this thread to me and it sounds perfect for where I'm at. I just weighed myself for the first time in ages, and I'm 10st 8, which is a lot for me. Back in the day, my normal weight was 9st 5 (and I thought I needed to lose a few pounds then!)

This weight has gone on from too much snacking - mostly because of boredom (WFH) and stress (family). I'm tired of feeling like exercise is so much harder than it needs to be, so I'd like to lose 5 pounds by August, and another 5 pounds by December. That feels realistic, I think, although who knows whether my peri-meno body will let me lose it!

Hoolahoophop · 01/05/2025 13:32

Hi @BlueberryFlapjack welcome over.

I gained through stress eating, snacking and large portions. I have lost by calorie counting, reducing snacks, and covering half my plate or bowl with salad or veg before I add anything else. I haven't picked up the exercise at all. Just eating less. I still have a treat every evening, a posh chocolate or two usually, still have a glass of wine now and then. But my typical day is
B: during the week I have a small bowl of cereal/2shredded wheat/porridge. At the weekend I have toast or one crumpet with lots of jam and butter!
L: soups, salads or leftovers. Bagel thins with low fat cream cheese or this week Ryvita and cream cheese.
S: if I am hungry in the afternoon I will have a piece of fruit. If I am grumpy and stressed I have a boiled sweet and make it last!
D: Salad or steamed or roasted veg. Whatever the family is eating, bolognaise, chili, curry, toad in the hole, roast, fish fingers! But I will take my usual portion size, then remove a third for lunch the following day and eat a more sensible portion size. Usually some yoghurt and fruit for pudding.
S: Home made cakes and biscuits feature highly, but cut into small portions, or those posh chocolates.

It has been a very slow weight loss, but I am lighter than I have been in years and it is still very slowly coming off. By Christmas I hope to be at my new stable size. I have lost half a stone in the first six months of the year, I hope to loose another half by the end of the year. I will then have a BMI of 22.7 and will be 8st

OMGitsnotgood · 01/05/2025 17:40

@Hoolahoophopit’s difficult enough eating healthily and losing weight without the added complications of children’s’ activities and fussiness. What sorts of things do they like or more importantly don’t they eat? I’m sure we can all help with suggestions. I seem to be able to solve other people’s food problems but not my own!!

OP posts:
OMGitsnotgood · 01/05/2025 17:46

Hi @BlueberryFlapjackand welcome ! You’ve made a good start by recognising that snacking is your weakness. Definitely one of mine too when I’m a bit down or stressed. I make sure we have plenty of fruit in, I also like yoghurts with a sprinkling of muesli. I think setting realistic goals as you have done is a good thing too. And keep reassessing them. I’m definitely not going to make the stone by June from this thread title but rather than just say I’m not going to make it and give up completely, I’m trying to eat healthily when I can.

OP posts:
BlueberryFlapjack · 01/05/2025 20:27

@Hoolahoophop you've done so well. Thanks for all of that info on what you're eating. I love the idea of eating a posh chocolate as a treat, but I have no self restraint. I'd literally have to buy one chocolate at a time to make that work!

Today went well. I only had healthy snacks, and I kept my calories under 1600. That's my plan to start off with, and I'll see how that's going in a couple of weeks. I don't want to go too low with the calories, as this has to be sustainable.

Thanks for the welcome from you @OMGitsnotgood. Snacking is so much worse when I'm at home than when I go into the office, so I'll aim to be in the office more next week. But it's been mostly fruit today, which is fine. I think you're right on the realistic goals. I've lost loads very quickly before doing Fast 800 (well more like Fast 1100 because I can't survive on that!) and it works, but it hasn't stayed off long term.

jeomeollibyeoldul · 02/05/2025 09:24

hi again everyone, welcome newbies! @BlueberryFlapjack your current weight doesnt sound bad at all to me but i think your plan for losing gradually is a great idea.

@Hoolahoophop i love that you eat the same food as your family because i feel like a big part of the reason "diets" fail is because people start separating themselves and eating all this weird diet food that doesn't nourish, satisfy or make them happy! so i also eat the same food that i always have, just a bit less of it and try to limit the sweet snacks to maybe once or twice a week.

didn't really manage to do much exercise yesterday despite my plans. i dont exercise for weight loss really but just for health! my eating was good though, although i did have a ready meal for lunch so need to cook something proper today.

Hoolahoophop · 02/05/2025 09:51

@OMGitsnotgood thanks, i am always looking for inspiration!

Myself and the DH will eat anything.

The kids like
Carbs, bread, pasta, will tolerate rice now and then, and will suffer a baked potato, but like waffles and chips, can occasionally convince them to eat some mash. Mostly they like bread, garlic bread, pizza (plain) wraps, pitta, toast buns, rolls, anything bread based, and hummus, they eat plain humus by the bucket.

Veg/Salad, really just carrot (raw) cucumber and red pepper. I can persuade them to a small spoonful of broccoli, cauliflower, peas and sweetcorn.

Protein, sausages, burgers, sliced ham, chicken Kiev (but no other chicken) fish fingers nothing like a proper cut of meat that you might have to put some effort into cutting and chewing!

They don't like strong flavors, don't like spice so no curries, don't like a sweet and sour, don't eat anything with cooked veg like a stir-fry, wont eat creamy or cheesy sauces (what kids don't like lasagna?) are not keen on 'mixed' food, so while they will eat mince, and they will eat mash, they will not eat cottage or shepherds pie. They don't like eggs so no omelets (I love an omelet)

They live on
Spaghetti Bolognese
Meatballs and pasta
Toad in the hole with carrot peas and sweetcorn
Chili con carne (minus the chili dh and I add that ourselves at the table!)
Wraps with humus veg and sliced ham
Burgers with hummus and crudités
Hotdogs with hummus and crudités
Chicken Kiev with mash peas and sweetcorn, carrot
Fish fingers and potato waffles

Which sounds a lot so maybe I am being over sensitive, but I am quite bored with it on repeat week after week. I LOVE food, Like to cook and was quite adventurous before the kids came along. We try to eat together and the same food most nights.

Any inspiration welcome!

OMGitsnotgood · 02/05/2025 10:37

@HoolahoophopThat is a decent amount of variety within the boundaries of your kids’ fussiness! But I love food and cooking too so can appreciate the frustration of being more restricted than you’d like. And it’s a pain that they don’t like eggs, so good for speedy meals!

A few suggestions - if they wouldn’t work for your family, say why then we can refine further.

On a week you’re having chilli or bolognese, make extra then the next day, parcel up some of the meat mixture in wraps, put in a baking dish, top with tomato sauce (or just a tin of chopped tomatoes) and grated cheese (leave tbe grated cheese off part of it if not liked/to reduce calories) and bake til hot.

You said they’d have some rice, have you tried sausage risotto? Chop up sausages and onions, cook in frying pan, add rice, tin of tomatoes and a bit of stock and mixed herbs. Add water as needed til rice is cooked. I’d also add in whatever veg they will eat.

Would they eat soup? Veg soup can be so tasty and if whizzed up the veg is hidden. Serve with ham wraps or a sausage in a bun.

Have you tried different minces - so make burgers from turkey or pork mince for example.

As they like burgers, they might like meat loaf served with tomato sauce and pasta

You mentioned fish fingers but not other fish (sorry if I missed it). Would they have tuna mixed with pasta and veg in a tomato sauce?

You said they would ‘suffer’ a baked potato. Mine used to like them cut in half, topped with heated up baked beans, sprinkled with grated cheese and grilled.

How are they with mayonnaise? Maybe too creamy but you could make pasta salad with the raw veg and one of tbe proteins they like chopped up and mixed with mayo.

i think it’s easy to forget that a simple meal can be nutritionally sound.

If none of the above work, then I’ll have another think.

Thanks @OMGitsnotgood

On a week you’re having chilli or bolognese, make extra then the next day, parcel up some of the meat mixture in wraps, put in a baking dish, top with tomato sauce (or just a tin of chopped tomatoes) and grated cheese (leave tbe grated cheese off part of it if not liked/to reduce calories) and bake til hot.

I like this idea, they do not like grated cheese melted onto anything (other than pizza so its 100% fuss not actual dislike!) But like mince and like wraps so it could work. Also, I always make a cauldron of mine if i am doing it for batching.

You said they’d have some rice, have you tried sausage risotto?

Unfortunately they refuse risotto as its 'all mixed in' we use leftover sausages in a basic tomato Sause with pasta - separate. This one annoys me most. I adore risotto and its so easy in the pressure cooker!

Would they eat soup?

No soups or stews - another annoyance as a slow cooker soup or stew used to be a favorite of mine, as well as tagine, slow cooked lamb shank in a rich gravy etc. But all refused as mixed in.

Have you tried different minces - so make burgers from turkey or pork mince for example.

Will do this for different burgers and meatballs, see if I can get them involved in making it. We made pasta a while back - and added blue food coloring, it was off putting but tasty and fun.

As they like burgers, they might like meat loaf served with tomato sauce and pasta

Never thought of this, another excellent idea.

You mentioned fish fingers but not other fish (sorry if I missed it). Would they have tuna mixed with pasta and veg in a tomato sauce?

They make sick noises when I eat tuna, so afraid not. I have tried lots of different types of actual fish but its all refused, as is any type of seafood. I love prawns, but they refuse those as well.

You said they would ‘suffer’ a baked potato.

I could try different toppings with a baked potato, they generally will eat half with an equal volume of potato to butter, or some baked beans. No melted cheese, but they will have a slice of cheese on the side.

How are they with mayonnaise?

No mayo. They do like the pine nut pasta salad marks and Spenser do, but have refused every attempt of mine to recreate it. As pine nuts, olive oil, a bit of raw veg and some pesto in the fridge would make a very quick as you go dinner for busy nights especially with summer coming.

i think it’s easy to forget that a simple meal can be nutritionally sound.
If none of the above work, then I’ll have another think.

You have a point here, they do love a 'picky tea' so this week had one night with a slice of ham, a slice of cheese and a sausage roll, some bread and butter, raw carrot, cucumber, pepper, sliced apple and grapes and some hummus. Stuffed the lot with no complaints in super quick time. They also love peanut butter so will eat a random collection of things from the fridge with a dipping bowl of peanut butter and some pasta or rice.

I wish they would like risotto, creamy pastas, stews, soups, stir-fry, omelet, curry, noodles......but alas. They eat like toddlers still. (Currently in Junior school) One of the eldest DCs favorite food is sushi! I am so envious!

Thanks for all the suggestions, they have made me feel better and think about ways to vary the known loves.

OMGitsnotgood · 02/05/2025 12:36

You’ve a tough gig there @Hoolahoophop
Maybe the grazing type tea woukd help test out some new things. DH & I had home made tandoori chicken (well chicken thigh fillet marinated in yoghurt with a few random spices thrown in) with salad the other day. You could cube something like that and put it out with other stuff they do like, and see how it goes. Won’t go to easy cos you and DH can have with another meal.

had lovely home cooked food today and managed to exercise! quite happy. really looking forward to the rest of the long weekend as despite the fact that we've just had one, it's definitely needed.

interesting reading about ideas for food for picky children. i used to be one of the pickiest eaters ever when i was a child. i dont think anything could have made me eat a piece of broccoli. i did eventually get better but it took many years.

how old are your kids @Hoolahoophop ? at least they like hummus, that's great for nutrition!

BlueberryFlapjack · 04/05/2025 13:17

@jeomeollibyeoldul my weight doesn’t sound a lot, but I’m short and I have a petite frame with skinny wrists and ankles, so I look almost over-inflated - like my head and limbs are on the wrong body.

I know what you mean about needing the long weekend. Me too!

Interesting to see all these meal lists - I’m so lacking in ideas and we tend to eat the same things every week. I want to mix it up, but there’s only so many hours in the week.

OMGitsnotgood · 04/05/2025 16:06

@jeomeollibyeoldulsounds like a lovely start to your weekend. We ate out on Friday, food was reasonably healthy but I had more wine than I should have. Out again to eat tonight, and have friends over for lunch tomorrow. it’s a lovely life and I’m very lucky, but doesn’t help with weight management! I’ve done a couple of gym classes and walks this weekend so hopefully I’ll have offset a bit of it.

@BlueberryFlapjackthere are so many demands on your time, especially if you are working and have children. I find MN a great source of meal ideas. Our DC are adults and don’t live with us, but I’ve found some lovely quick and heathy recipes on Taming Twins and Anna’s family kitchen - both sites thanks to MN.

ah well, bank holidays only come a few times a year. make the most of it! weight loss will still happen as long as you are consistent.

i exercised every day this weekend. only had one treat which was dessert yesterday. remaining on track. i havent weighed myself in so long but im getting curious now...though not sure if it would be encouraging or discouraging, suppose it depends on the number 😅still trying to lose enough to fit into some of my older clothes, especially this one pair of jeans. i just hate the idea of wasting money on perfectly good clothes when they dont fit me anymore.

going to make curry this week (i usually make enough for 3 dinners and then just eat leftovers so i dont have to cook!) so need to get the beef out of the freezer.

HayleyBean · 06/05/2025 09:33

I had quite a food heavy Saturday but I'm back on the calorie counting and hit the gym this morning too

BlueberryFlapjack · 06/05/2025 11:59

Totally indulged this weekend but back on it today. Rest day as overdid it with exercising this weekend, but I’ve planned my exercise for the rest of the week, so feeling positive.
