Scales saying I’m 9.2 stone can’t be right?

catphone · 28/12/2024 11:23

I am a size 12 top 14 legs. I have big thighs in my opinion and my arms have a bit of fat. I am 5ft 2 or 5ft 3. I bought Renpho scales and tried a number of times but it keeps showing me as 9.2. It can’t be right as others who say they’re the same weight are a size 10.

What do you think you weigh? How does it compare to your usual weight on previous scales? The floor does make a difference. A big factor also is bone density. My SiL has all ways described herself a solid. Our family are skinny light weight.

This was brought home to us very clearly when our children were babies. At 6 weeks both babies weigh 6lb 10. Holding them you could feel that one baby seemed a lot heavier than the other. This has carried on till adult hood with my children exceptional skinny but my nieces look heavier. My SiL who had always fretted about her weight took a lot of comfort from it.

Looking at us now there is not a great deal to look at between us appearance wise us but she is well over a stone heavier.

MadamePeriwinkle · 28/12/2024 12:24

I was a size 10-12 at the same weight and height (sadly a long time ago!)

It's going to depend on the brand and cut of clothes and your overall body shape, not just numbers on the scales.

I remember having a size 10 that fitted perfectly, but I couldn't always get into size 12 trousers.

Try and go by how you feel rather than worrying about numbers which won't always be accurate.

suki1964 · 28/12/2024 12:27

5ft 2, 9 stone 4 and wear 12 tops, 8 in trousers and skirts

Ive sod all below the waist line, but very round between boobs and belly button, I look like an apple with matchsticks sticking out :)

SharpOpalNewt · 28/12/2024 12:35

Measurements not weight are a far better guide for clothes size. Though obviously not infallible as it depends on how reliable the shop sizing is.

Size 14 hips are about 40"-41". Mine are 39" and I'm 4 stone heavier and 5 inches taller than you, so it varies quite a lot. If I were 9 stone I'd be a size 6.

LaurieFairyCake · 28/12/2024 12:48

Definitely height.

I'm 3 inches shorter than the OP, weigh 5 pounds more and am in size 8/Smalls in sweaty betty/

I'm very compact/muscly. As an example my waist is 24 inches.

It's insane how we're all so different

AbsolutelyFriggingKnackered · 28/12/2024 12:49

Just under 11 stone and 5ft4
Bigger Size 12 or a very small 14

At 9 stone (which I have been) I'd be a size 8-10

IDontHateRainbows · 28/12/2024 12:50

I'm 5'4 and 11.2 stone and a 14
At 10st I'd be a 12

We are all different

Marinel · 28/12/2024 12:51

I'm 5ft3 and at 9st2 I'm a size 12. The size you take depends on where you carry your weight.

Doggymummar · 28/12/2024 12:51

Just check the scales by weighing something you know the weight of. Bag of sugar, pint of milk etc

Ilikeyoursleeves · 28/12/2024 13:01

I bought Renpho scales about a month ago and they gave a reading that was about half a stone heavier than my previous manual scales!!! I checked the accuracy of the Renpho scales by weighing a bag of 500g sugar and they seem accurate. Damn!

Are you questioning cos you've just bought new scales??

I find the way different people carry weight fascinating (and frustrating!). I'm 10.5 St, 5'7" and a sz14. My friend is the same height as me no extra muscle, but is also a Sz 14 at 13 stone. At 13 stone I'd be a size 18 at least.

SilviaDaisyPouncer · 28/12/2024 13:17

I was heavier when I worked out a lot, but I was thinner then. I have health issues these days and can't work out like I used to, but I have to be careful not to get to the weight I was before because none of my clothes will fit my belly.

Are you able to exercise at all?

CandiedPrincess · 28/12/2024 13:19

I am 5ft 1, and currently 8st 10lb. I am a size 12.

SabbatWheel · 28/12/2024 13:23

I’m 5’1”, 9st 3 and a size 12-14 but I’ve gone through the menopause and have stopped my regular runs recently due to illness. When fully fit I’m more a definite 12.

catphone · 28/12/2024 13:28

To answer your questions
yes I’m using a flat surface, on Lino flooring
I haven’t weighed myself in about 5 or 6 years. I only just got new renpho scales
I walk almost daily, although it doesn’t average out as much
I exercise almost daily, for 20-30 minutes on average
BUT I had been eating a lot of snacks and using a massive amount of cheese/butter, and eating a second dinner

I don’t know what health issues you have and it isn’t my business but I have joint pains and get a lot of migraines and have really painful periods, so I have health issues too

All depends on your body composition. I’m the same height and weight as you but am 10-12 on top and 8-10 on bottom.

MJconfessions · 28/12/2024 13:54

I think you sound really naive, weight doesn’t equal a universal dress size.

I’m short and at 9 stone 2, I could fit in a size 8/10 though I’d look chubby. I had overweight BMI then, but ultimately I don’t have a broad frame so could physically fit in smaller sized clothes even if I didn’t look great in them.

I’m now 8 stone 8 and can more comfortably fit in a size 8 but I still have more weight to lose. When I was last this weight a few years ago I’d probably be a size 6, because I had more muscle mass and less fat mass than I do now.

BobbyBiscuits · 28/12/2024 14:04

Everyone's body is a different shape, organs are different sizes. It's not just about height. And a size 12 in one shop or garment is often the same as a 10 in another.
Even when I'm dangerously underweight I'm never below a size 8. I've got really broad shoulders etc. Some people who weight three stone more than me are also a size 8 at the same height. So just know that we are all unique. You can only compare yourself to yourself.

Snapncrackle · 28/12/2024 14:10

I’m 5ft 6 and weigh 8.9 - today but my ideal weight is around 9stone
I’m a size 8 -10 - small in most clothes
but I prefer small/ medium if I can when I buy stuff

Normallynumb · 28/12/2024 14:13

I'm 9 stone Exactly and 5'4 and a size 12 because I've always carried weight on my stomach which has increased post menopause.
I am disabled so sedentary.
Everyone carries weight differently and I think eating differently over Christmas would make a difference.
It may be fluid so I'd give it a couple of weeks and weigh yourself again
Being fit and healthy matters more than numbers on the scales

Mynewnameis · 28/12/2024 14:19

I should be about your weight and height but currently quite porky. At that weight I fit a size 10 approx. I'm 10.6 stone now and size 12 at least

Mynewnameis · 28/12/2024 14:19

Actually i might be a bit shorter which will make a difference.

PrioritisePleasure24 · 28/12/2024 14:28

I’m around 11 stone, 5ft 5
i can wear anything between a ten/12 on top and a 12/14 on bottom. Im reasonably fit and healthy i mostly eat well andregularly do spin classes, some resistance training, yoga and plenty of outdoor walking. My bum and thighs are well defined and not wobbly so naturally some clothes don’t fit. I have broad shoulders ( used to swim too)

Im 45 i don’t care. i just buy whatever size fits me and looks ok!
