Hello- I am looking for ideas here. I'm early 50s and have put on 7 stone in the last few years 😳

I am thinking about coaching or a nutritional therapist?

I eat well and generally cook from scratch. I'm pretty knowledgeable about nutrition but I eat way too much.

I can see this is due to many reasons- I was raised by a recovering annorexic and nutrition was the way to tackle it. I have some odd ideas. Like I must eat all the healthy stuff or I will run out of energy or become ill.

I am disabled (I cant walk or cycle) but I exercise daily for lots of reasons not really related to weight loss.

I have also had some quite extreme stress in the last few years. But I meditate, do yoga, and make a massive effort to do things I enjoy.

I really don't want injections as I am quite sensitive to medications and I absolutely won't have surgery (scaredy-cat)

So...due to a change in budget I have around £100pxm for a limited time. I am thinking about something like therapy, coaching (except I happen to know some life coaches and they are quite irritating). I know two nutritional therapists that I really trust as people.

But I just don't know what to do. Eat less move more, calorie counting, keto, IF etc isn't on its own sustainable for me. Nor SW or WW etc. The solution is in my brain.

Any ideas? What would you try. Has anyone tried any of these kinds of methods?

@Attictroll yes! That's what I keep thinking but it would probably last around 3 days and then I couldn't keep it up.

@Autumnweddingguest well yes it could be medical. It happened quite quickly and my disability is a neuro functional thing with no treatment so far. It's quite hard but I'm much more positive since I started exercising properly again. I'm menopausal and the stress of recent years has been pretty serious. So none of that helps.

@ZanyPombear any body type can do yoga. It's not all physical. But I'm really flexible. I have to stand more or less on one leg for standing asanas and a lot is of course seated or on all fours. Plus I've done yoga most of my adult life so I understand how to adapt it. I also use props like a wedge or folded blanket to allow my feet to meet the floor. In fact I teach sometimes.

Another vote for Slimpod here, especially as you suggest your thoughts around food might need rewiring a bit.

Would joining a gym and/or swimming pool work for you, OP? Or perhaps a decent exercise app subscription to do from home? I find that I naturally eat better when I'm in a regular exercise routine anyway.

Also, might cooking classes help to make healthy meals more interesting?

ResultsMayVary · 14/09/2024 22:27

Maybe buy smaller bowls and plates as an easy way to reduce portion sizes? When you prepare a meal could you then halve it and eat the rest at your next meal?

It sounds like you are very focused on food. Are there any projects or other activites you could focus on instead so the food becomes more of a background thing?

IHaveNoMoreFucksToGive · 14/09/2024 22:31

Nutracheck App
And a decent pair of food weighing scales
It's a case of 'spending' your calories wisely and not eating crap
I've lost 14lbs in 5 weeks

Eyesopenwideawake · 14/09/2024 22:32

The solution is in my brain.

You could invest in 4 months of hypnosis sessions to change your emotional responses to eating once and for all.

just2morelengths · 15/09/2024 20:03

@ResultsMayVary (excellent nn) - this appeals. I think k I am a bit overly interested in food. I have lots of hobbies and responsibilities too. A disabled partner who can't work, my own job, I have hobbies that take my time, and exercise too. Kids and grandchildren plus aging parents- there's no shortage of distractions.

@Eyesopenwideawake do you have any experience of hypnotherapy? Just looking at you nn!

@LastTimeLosingIt is it the weight loss that has helped your pain? I actually don't have pain. I'm very lucky there. My problems are functional. I literally cannot walk without a stick and then it's dodgy!

Anyway. After a week of thinking I might need to think differently, I have lost 3lbs! I know it's just one weigh in but it gives me hope that something is possible.

I'm going to read through again and see what to do. I will look at slim pod. I've seen adverts.

@Eyesopenwideawake do you have any experience of hypnotherapy? Just looking at you nn!

I'm a remedial hypnotist, which is similar to hypnotherapy but without the trance element - the person is awake throughout. I'm actually working on a home made documentary at the moment with a (very!) brave client who is being filmed going through the program to deal with her emotional eating once and for all. (And a spider phobia!)

Fantastic news. I think believing it's possible is sometimes the hardest thing

Overeaters Anonymous oa.org/ and save your money. The problem with many weight loss drugs, as with dieting, is that most people put all the weight back on as soon as they stop. OA is the only way that I have found that sorts out my thinking too. Good luck OP

TeenToTwenties · 16/09/2024 07:04

See a private GP. (That's what I did anyway).

Ariela · 16/09/2024 09:06

I'd buy smaller plates. Charity shop would be fine - vintage plates WERE smaller.
Makes the food dished up look bigger, just eat it a tad slower.
Don't buy snacks then you cannot eat snacks.
Save the rest for New Clothes smaller size.

YouLookLikeYoureHotToGo · 16/09/2024 09:19

I had weekly sessions with a personal trainer 10 years ago. It was the best money I've ever spent on myself.

I lost about 3 stone, found a love of a particular type of exercise and have kept it up ever since.

Life changing.

Mounjaro. Costs me about £150 a month but jas changed my life

@jefl011 can I ask where you get your Mountjaro from and what your injection mg is please? I am on month 2 of it and going up to 7.5 mg soon. I worked out that it's going to cost me around £190 a month with Zava. It's absolutely worth it health wise but would love it to cost less if possible. Thank you!

AnonyLonnymouse · 16/09/2024 09:43

I’m no expert (overweight, late forties, BMI of about 27) but I am have decided to give a final try at traditional weight loss before trying anything medical.

I am already flexitarian and fairly low carb.

I have started weighing my food. So I don’t have a ‘blob’ of the wholegrains that I like to eat, I have 50g. You immediately become a lot more conscious of portion size.

I am now also using a calorie tracker MyNetDiary and it is very revealing! The app makes it easy with scanning etc

All of this is completely free, apart from a set of digital scales if you don’t already have them.

SnacklessWonder · 16/09/2024 09:54

@just2morelengths I've had zero side effects on Mounjaro but if you don't want injections, you don't want injections.

I'd be looking into a fitness/nutrition coach who can keep you on the straight and narrow if you want to do it that way.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 16/09/2024 10:13

When I saw a dietitian, she advised that the massive salad should contain 30g cheese OR nuts. I find that sticking to around 1400 calories (for me) works. Breakfast/lunch/dinner around 300/400/500, plus 200 for extras. I do not count calories thought-I did once, so I know roughly what a meal "weighs". Plenty of fruit and veg, plenty of protein. Think about calcium in your diet or use a supplement, given your age. I find meals based around pulses and veg very effective.

I've just ordered my second 7.5mg pen and used Curate. Miss Mounjaro on Tiktok makes a list of prices every 2 weeks that includes discount codes so takes the faff out of shopping around x

AnnieMcFanny · 16/09/2024 12:09

And again it doesn't seem healthy to me (in terms of nutrition). Because you are essentially restricting by having a fairly heavy appetite suppressant

I think you’ve misunderstood how it works. I’m currently on it and have no problem sticking to the 1400 -1500 calories per day that I should be eating to have a healthy weight loss. The only difference Mounjaro has made to my eating is that I can stick to my calories without much effort whereas going it alone on will power was hit and miss.

SillyTurd · 16/09/2024 13:41

I don't see you mentioned drinking water.
Personally, I lost 40 kilos from drinking warm water daily. It's not the most pleasant thing at first, but it does wonders. Especially when you're on a budget. Water fills up you and feel full, I guess the same way it is with wegowy/ozempic. When it's a bit warm, still water it will make you feel full immediately. You just need to know how much water you need to drink daily. You can calculate your daily water norm and go from there. It just depends on various factors like your climate, gender, weight, pregnancy, and so on. So it's better to know the exact amount you need. Because when you drink less than needed - you don't see an effect. Conversely, when more than needed, you get tired from it very quickly. This will make you abstain from drinking water, which you absolutely don't want.

So you can add a bit of flavors, aromas to it if you wish. To make it more pleasant. I switched random flavors I bought at costco, so it did help.
