Why are you NOT taking a weight loss drug?

Carowe · 11/06/2024 14:09

I’ve lost nearly 20 pounds by intermittent fasting and cutting calories right down to 1300. Plus I’ve upped the exercise.

I made the decision not to use a weight loss drug as the side effects of nausea,
abdomen pain, vomiting and diarrhoea sound horrific. I had a friend who said she shot the bed. That is just not something I could tolerate or risk as a germphobe.

Plus there have been a few people who said it made their anxiety worse which is not something I can play around with due to generalised anxiety disorder.

However, I have my weak moments like now where my brain is just obsessing over food (god I want a jam doughnut). And my goal seems so far away.

What are your reasons?

I think people look worse after taking these drugs and too many risks rather modify eating & moving around.

I’m sorry but this is so so rude and judgemental. Plus many people are not losing weight for the approval of how they look to other people it’s for their health. I could not care less what other people think I look like I care about myself

It's relative isn't it and about what someone feels is important.. surely health and feeling confident in clothes, being able to do everything you want to do in life, living longer etc comes way before looking a bit older.

Is the saggy skin (if this is true) due to the drug itself or rapid weight loss?

OP posts:
AhBiscuits · 13/06/2024 10:20

It's the weight loss and not the drug, it would be the same with any method. These drugs make you lose weight by making it easier to stay in a calorie deficit, that's it. People talking about ozempic face etc are really just talking about weight loss face.

gurp · 13/06/2024 10:22

I need to get fit more than loose weight. My blood pressure is too high and if it's gets worse I need to start medication. From experience I know that I will loose weight by exercising often.

This jabs just sound a quick fix to be able to wear smaller clothes.

From what I have researched it’s because of the rapid loss.

Madickenxx · 13/06/2024 10:39

Not read other responses but I tried Ozempic a couple of years ago when it first came out in the UK. I was on it for 6 months but didn't find that it made me stop thinking about food and my eating was rarely about genuine hunger. Once I upped the dose towards the intended dose I got so tired that I would fall asleep in the middle of the day and my family got really worried about me. Once I stopped the weight came back on.

Am now losing (slowly) by reducing carbs and trying to eat a fairly clean diet.

Ozampic face

He’s a man in his 70s who lost a huge amount of weight. His face is going to look a bit saggy no matter how he lost it. The collagen ain’t so plentiful at that age!

gurp · 13/06/2024 10:46

I think the ozempic face comes from rapid weight loss and because the fact that the resulting end weight is much lower than what one would obtain with traditional methods.

Agree. I don't think that's a representative image of injectables at all. Plus he lost the weight over about four years and said he did it by giving up booze, following a plant-based diet and working with Serena Williams' fitness coach. Given the time frame – which is backed up by pictures – it doesn't appear he's used injectables. He was 29 stone at his heaviest.

Menora · 13/06/2024 12:25

Please stop it’s just weight loss face and honestly it’s rude. Imagine people coming on here and saying everyone fat is unattractive!

John Goodman is an amazing actor and he didn’t want to die young. Good on him. So many young actors like Chris Farley died so young and weight and booze was a factor.

JG and Sharon Osborne are in their SEVENTIES so please stop it’s so ageist and rude and cruel commenting on peoples faces like that. It’s so unrealistic to expect him to look like he’s still 40?

Really if your face is the main driver for everything you do in life you have bigger issues to worry about. He could get his face done by a surgeon if he wanted to but he clearly hasn’t. When you age everything sags its nature

Carowe · 13/06/2024 12:36

I do worry about the effects of rapid weight loss on my face. When I do fast 800 and a decent amount of exercise the weight does drop off. But I’m 31 so hoping I still have enough collagen to stave off the worst effects.

Ive been wanting facial threads anyway so will just have to see what I’m left when I meet my goal.

I think both, because it seems to take so much fat that wouldn't normally disappear. It's not an age thing, my cousin who is 21 took it and aged 10 years, looked like he'd worked outside for years. But it reversed once he stopped and put some back on.
I think healthy weight is so much more important

Interesting. Was your cousin underweight when he look old beyond his years?

OP posts:
Disturbia81 · 13/06/2024 13:02

@Carowe Yes he got far too skinny, but it's easy to do as the quick weight loss becomes addictive. I think if people stop at a sensible weight it should be okay.

Oh I'd think twice about facial threads. They're always on the 'what facial procedures should you avoid' lists.

zaffa · 13/06/2024 20:46

@Carowe it makes it easier to stick to the healthy eating and exercise. So I still have to do the work, but in the past when I tried to diet and cut calories I would struggle badly with food cravings, impact to mood, food noise etc. all that is gone. I'm eating less, making healthy choices (for example I don't have that overwhelming hunger and desire to eat anything, so at a mealtime when I am hungry I can think and select a meal that is balanced and healthy, I don't reach for crisps or chocolate to snack on / shovel in whilst preparing a meal).
And because it works, I see results on the scales. So the self loathing of failure is gone. I see results so I keep working at it. And then I see more results.
I have a lot to lose, so actually I am the target market for it. I've still had to self fund, and I was nervous about taking it without doctor appointments and supervision. But if the choice was not taking it or having to self fund it from an online doctor privately, I'm definitely doing the private doctor - I'm paying so much that I'm keen for it to work and for it to be sustainable so I'm working at retraining my body to eat small, healthy meals, enjoy exercise and counselling to understand how I've gotten myself into this situation to begin with.
I'm also told that it alters your body so that you have the same chance of success with diet and exercise as a naturally slim person, the damage I've done with years of yo yo dieting is almost undone and I'm having real success just following the 'eat less, move more' way of life (with the help of Mounjaro).

To be fair, you and others have come onto a thread specifically for people who don't use injectibles. Posters are sharing their own fears and insecurities - there really was no need for you to be on here arguing every point, let alone taking everything so personally.

It would just be nice if people of similar interest could carve out a bit of space for a discussion on a large site like this without it being hijacked by people with another agenda to push. I notice the thread someone created in response to this one, for people who DO use injectibles, hasn't been swamped by people who don't. Why is that do you think?

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 14/06/2024 01:43

I've also just realised, @Menora , you're all over this thread too - another one specifically for people trying to lose weight without injectibles. Created out of frustration over the fact there's so little discourse about this on the boards anymore. Yet you're in there, pretty heavy on the criticism of other peoples' eating plans and haven't declared, as far as I can see, that you have in fact used injectibles to lose weight yourself.

Agree wholeheartedly with this. It would be so nice to be able to have a discussion without being jumped on and told we’re being horrible about injectables. They have their own board now to sing their praises as much as they like!

Menora · 14/06/2024 07:34

@Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice it’s not a secret I have used them (for 6 months) so you have not uncovered my deep dark past in an exposé 😂 but I haven’t used them for over 9 months because I did not get on with them so I have experience of using them to lose weight then having to stop and lose weight on my own without them.

Happy to answer any more personal questions you may have. I’m sorry I don’t meet your standards or expectations.

If there is something breaking the guidelines I have said or done then you can report my posts to Mumsnet but you can also just not read my posts, it’s your choice

I was not the only poster to object to the term ozempic face FYI. It’s a media narrative. It can happen to you losing weight on your own.

I have lost 30lbs since Feb on Wegovy. Dropped from a size 16 to a 10!12 and have other 5lbs to my goal weight and healthy BMI. I don't look 'older' in fact the opposite. The Extra weight aged me. I can't exercise much due to my disability so Wegovy was a godsend to belp me lose weight. I don't care for those who want to judge me, it worked for me and I am more than happy with my new body. I have my confidence back and best of all it also helped me quit drinking a bottle of wine everynight. It doesn't matter what method is used to lose weight as long as that person is happy 😁
