Weight loss injections with ulcerative colitis

Travellinggirly · 06/06/2024 20:17

Has anyone with ulcerative colitis used weight loss injections? I filled out an eligibility questionnaire online and one of the questions was a history of inflammatory bowel disease which obviously I had to answer yes to and then it said they wouldn’t be able to assist me.
I take daily preventative medication for UC and have done for around 20 years. It works for me and I have zero symptoms, never have flare ups and don’t have to watch my diet. Just wondered really if it’s a general no go to use weight loss injections if you have any kind of IBD? Wondering whether to discuss with my GP or if it’s just a waste of time trying to get an appointment if others have been told it’s a big no.

Thank you.

Hi 👋 I’m a UC sufferer too and just received my MJ this morning. I’ve come off all UC meds recently too. I was symptom free for years and then decided to take meds as a preventative measure last year, since then I’ve had flares, might be a coincidence but … anyway I’m awaiting camera after the colonoscopy didn’t show the inflammation. Long story short I want to feel better, be strict with diet and alcohol and from what I’ve read MJ helps with all of that so I have not declared my UC and have exaggerated my weight a bit to get the MJ, I’m overweight but apparently my BMI wasn’t high enough when applying for MJ on certain sites. All the stories I’ve read seem positive and I guess I wanted to say hi as I’ve found this post useful. Also do I tell the consultant about the MJ ? Or stop it the week before.

TandyhatesAmanda · 09/11/2024 09:42

Yes. I take Asocol 400mg twice daily no issues for me

Hi 👋

I have now started my mounjaro journey. Before injecting I was in full flare, had just increased my daily meds of Mesalamine granules to include Mesalamine suppositories, to try and get symptoms under control. Symptoms being, urgency, bloating, wind, nausea, fatigue and bleeding. I wasn't sure if it was the best idea to jab but decided I was so sick anyway and totally fed up.

The following morning I woke up full of energy! 4 days on most of my symptoms have completely disappeared. Still getting a little urgency but my stools are formed at it is max 3 times a day. I decided to stop all of my Mesalamine on day 2 to test if the mounjaro was actually the cause or just a coincidence. I haven't needed needed to take it since. It is some sort of miracle!

With regards to weightloss, I haven't had the appetite suppression that people speak of. I am still hungry so I am having to be mindful of what I am eating. The 'food noise' is certainly less but not gone. I had a cheeky weigh this morning and I am 5lb down.

CoastalCalm · 09/11/2024 12:50

Crohns for me but I did research and didn’t declare it , it improved things radically for me - slowed down my stoma output and reduced general feelings of inflammation. I mentioned it to gastro team and they said to just keep eye on hydration etc and nothing concerning came up during the couple of months I took it

Gr81 · 13/11/2024 19:17

How’s the journey going? I’m 5 days in from my first dose and I’ve got flu like symptoms so don’t feel great yet. UC urgency is still there and had two glasses of wine at the weekend and felt utterly sh*t the next day so no wine or alcohol since. Not had many food cravings but have made sure I’ve eaten. Not sure I’m eating less atm tbh

SamJM2 · 06/12/2024 10:24

Hey! Thank you for all the information on here, I have IBD and gone with curate due to them not specifically asking about IBD. Hoping this helps, will update if/when it gets approved.
Interesting to see everyone's experiences with this. Has anyone had any contact from their GP about taking it?
I also have a 10% off code if anyone wants it.

Dha · 07/12/2024 00:05

I have UC managed well with Asacol. No flares for years. Started Mounjara via Numan, who were fully aware of my medical history, first 4 weeks were great, lost appetite and weight but then week 4 started feeling ropey and went into full flare up (lots of blood so no mistaking it for something else).
100% certain this is connected with the injection so stopped it, increased my Asacol and symptoms are now easing.
I'm not going back on mounjara, it obviously doesn't suit my insides.
My appetite has come back about a week after stopping.
I wish it had worked but it's just one of those things. Just posting this experience if it helps others decide.

Thanks for posting. I'm sorry it didn't work out for you and hope you get back to remission soon.

Just a thought, but I wonder if the delayed gastric emptying had an effect on your pill absorption. I think they're designed to survive the stomach acid and release in the bowel, but maybe they didn't make it due to the delay and were released and destroyed in the stomach instead.

I use mesalazine suppositories for UC and have virtually stopped using them - from 3 per week to perhaps one a fortnight, since I started MJ in July. I've just hit a 4 stone loss at BMI 28.5 from 38. Aiming to lose another 3 stone.

I didn't think about that, but it could explain the flare.
Glad it's working for you and you've made brilliant progress..it is a great weight loss drug if your body can cope with it

I have found I have IBS symptoms (not the same, I know). I have left side colitis and used to be in a lot of pain every day, that's gone, basically I feel i have improved while taking Mounjaro. I put it down to coincidence. However,I stopped taking Mounjaro for a couple of months (financial reasons) and those symptoms came back. Back on low dose and symptoms almost gone again.

It would be interesting for them to do a proper study into it.

Katiedog · 17/12/2024 07:40

I've written to my gastro consultant asking the question about any diet injection. I'm awaiting a response to find out if I could take munjaro or any other. I suggest you do the same. Good luck!

Thanks for this thread. I have Crohns but been in remission for 15 years and now even a few years off maintence drugs and still well. I’ve declared to Asda Pharma so we’ll see if they approve…

You should be fine with Asda. I used them for my first one but noted their doctors are Zava. Decided to go direct to Zava after that as cheaper. Message me if you would like a Zava discount code. Good luck on your journey 😊

I have ulcerative Colitis, been stable for years, boots, asda and voy wouldn't touch me. I went to Numan, they asked a few more questions, sent a letter to my Dr, I told them I had written to my consultant who has come back with no issues. They were happy with that, I received my munjaro within 48hrs that I will be starting on the 2nd January. Try Numan and good luck.

Thank you. No success with Asda but Numan were quick and sensible. Thanks for the tip

Hi, good luck on your journey, I started Mounjaro 6 weeks ago with Crohn’s disease on Azathioprine meds. I declared this to pharmacy2u and was prescribed it no problem. First 4 weeks on 2.5ml was fine, no side effects, minimal weight loss of around 7lbs but felt like my appetite was reduced and BMs were less and more solid than usual. Last 2 weeks I upped to 5ml but 48hrs after each dose I get rammed with nausea/sickness/stomach pain and disgusting sulphur burps. I’m going to reduce my dose this week as I just can’t cope with this feeling and dealing with my 3 children alone. I will persevere though as even though weight loss is still slow, im now down 12lbs which is more than I’ve lost in years and my appetite is suppressed and the food noise is all gone.

BuildingABetterMe · 14/02/2025 13:32

I have had a feeling of sickness on 7.5 and no energy or zest for life. I have decided to step back to 6.25 (1 shot of 5 and 15 clicks) and feel so much better. Maybe an in-between dose would work for you also @EmzzzEmma

EmzzzEmma · 14/02/2025 14:28

@BuildingABetterMe Yes! After reading loads on other forums, I saw these smaller dose suggestions. I will try 3.75ml next week and hopefully that should sort it. Thank you!

Hi all, so happy to come across this thread. I am looking at starting the MJ journey and also have UC. Controlled on Salofalk. Have High BP and Underactive thyroid. Losing weight will really make the biggest difference for me. Now to find someone to prescribe it. My UC specialist nurse not keen, and GP referred me to Tier 3 weight management, but I know this can take ages so willing to go private. Any advice welcome 😁

Katiedog · 19/02/2025 16:50

Hi, I went to Numan, they are more expensive than some, but after a few additional questions and a letter from my UC consultant saying Mounjaro has no contraindications they accepted me. I moved over to Simplyonline pharmacy for my 7.5mg pen as they were nearly £100 cheaper. Voy, boots, Asda all said no. Good look with your journey.

beckybldn · 24/04/2025 17:41

Hi All,

I thought it might be useful to share my experience here as I found reading yours useful.

I was diagnosed with UC back in 2013. I was put on high-dose steroids which messed up my joints, mental health and made me gain a stone in a month, but seemed to work wonders for my UC. I cycled through a variety of other maintenance meds at this point, but ended up feeling worse for the Mesalazine. So only ended up finding my "new normal" and only taking Endo and GERD meds since 2013.

I was 135kg in summer 2023, and referred to the weight management team by my GP as I have a number of long-term health conditions like PCOS, and sleep apnea, I had been aiming for an NHS prescription for one of the GLP1 meds. It turned out after a long wait, "there was no budget" for such meds and although I was eligible on paper, it was told I had no hope of being prescribed it on the NHS anytime for the foreseeable future. I was encouraged by the dietitian to explore paying for it privately. She justified it as "you'll save the money on food" ;b

I started Mounjaro in late May 2024. I had been making a really concerted effort with my diet prior to starting meds, so was down to 125kg, by the point I started. I'm now 99kg as of late April 25.

I started out with Asda, but found their delivery unreliable, which means the pens then only have 30 days. Moved to Boots Pharmacy in month 3. I did not disclose my UC to either, as it had been under control for so long without the need for meds.

I'm now at the maximum dose of 15mg, have been for a few months now. The weight loss is undoubtedly made much much easier. Even as someone who loves food as an art, I simply don't have the space. Overeating is super brutal, so you're forced not to.

My bowels have undoubtedly struggled over this time. Maybe once a month, I'd have a day where it was very bad, which was probably twice as common as my previous "new normal". Unfortunately my "little bros" wedding last summer was one such day, where I must have gone to the bathroom 10 times in the 5 hour reception :( But mostly it's been manageable. Unfortunately it has in recent months got much worse. Oscillating aggressively between diarrhoea and constipation. I'd never really suffered with the latter, only the former. The combination is brutal. Sometimes with lots of blood.

I pushed my GP to do some blood/stool tests. Mostly normal. Vit B low but not so much I can get a shot, but the stool test came back with some inflammation. So I have been referred back to the NHS gastro as "urgent". That was a week ago. The appointment is in early June. So 6 weeks later.

My current pen is on its last dose, and I considered stopping, but have decided to continue for one more month, until I see the gastro. Stopping now for 6 weeks would mean I'd have to start again and I hear from friends who have done that, that the early doses don't hit like they did the first time around, so I worry I might have to spend 5 months (aka £1,000) getting back to an effective dose if I restart. I can't be sure the MJ is to blame, and it feels foolhardy to drop it without knowing.

I should say, overall I have found the MJ beneficial. Being 35kg lighter is quite some improvement in my quality of life, so it's a fine balance.

I don't have any questions, but will double back once I speak with my gastro and share their thoughts :)

I got an official letter from my gastroenterology consultant saying there are no contra indications to taking MJ the Trizrpatide has no know effects on UC. Hoping you get sorted soon and it all calms down. Good luck with your continued use. 🙂
