Has anyone done this?
Has it helped?

I have started doing this just this week but finding it so difficult ! Will give it a month and see if it helps.

acatcalledjohn · 23/03/2024 12:35

What?

Olive oil has good properties for health as part of a balanced diet, but it's not a weight loss supplement. Anyone who tries to sell it as such is messing with you.

CurlewKate · 23/03/2024 12:38

Why would olive oil help weight loss?

How much are you taking?
I eat it everyday anyway but it seems it might be good to have a tablespoon on an empty stomach of a morning to help inflammation & weight loss

No one is trying to sell it to me.
I buy it anyway.

What possible evidence based reason are you reading for olive oil aiding with weight loss?

Isitbedtimeyet3 · 23/03/2024 13:18

It’s high in fat and calories so isn’t going to be beneficial. You need to track your macros to get what your body needs and not over eat fat and calories.

FriedGold · 23/03/2024 13:18

Does it work by speeding up movement through the bowel, like a laxative?

Mrssheepskin · 23/03/2024 13:18

Olive oil is very calorific so I wouldn’t just take it on its own. Why do you think it aids weight loss? I use it in all my cooking though due to the health benefits.

StephanieSuperpowers · 23/03/2024 13:22

I read about this diet before, the Shangri-la diet. It's not supposed to be olive oil though, it's supposed to be a flavourless oil so that you're not hungry but aren't associating flavours and calories.

MiltonNorthern · 23/03/2024 13:22

Ok I've googled it
it may reduce appetite and reduce insulin resistance. So if you take it in the morning you would be hoping to feel full and therefore eat less food I guess. If you drink it then have a normal breakfast it's not going to help with weight loss. Research also suggested that women who take olive oil lost more fat than women on a low fat diet even if they consumed more calories. We would need to know the rest of the olive oil group's diet to understand what factors are actually aiding in weight loss. If they were eating high fat low carb whole foods in comparison with high carb low fat processed food the other factors would be very relevant.

TL/DR - olive oil won't make you lose weight by itself unless you use it as a tool to eat less overall. Swapping breakfast for olive oil would probably lead to small weight loss as long as you don't eat anything extra during the day.

Ifailed · 23/03/2024 13:23

Oliver oil is twice as calorific as double cream! (885 Kcal v 467Kcal in100g)

acatcalledjohn · 23/03/2024 13:23

Selling it to you through blogs and dodgy websites full of misinformation.

It's good as part of a balanced diet. In real terms this means that the weight loss comes from a balanced diet in which you are in a calorie deficit, and olive oil is simply a good ingredient. It most certainly is not the cause of weight loss.

At weekends I have bread for breakfast and instead of butter I drizzle olive oil on my slice of bread. I currently eat a fairly balanced diet, but I am not in enough of a deficit to lose weight. And no amount of olive oil will change that.

OnHerSolidFoundations · 23/03/2024 13:23

Just google olive oil for weightloss

That sounds like a different principle. Flavourless oil would be a seed oil which is likely to increase inflammation not reduce it. Olive oil does have some innate health benefits whereas seed oils are actively harmful.

I just have. How are you using it?

Palpatation · 23/03/2024 13:25

The only thing that works for weight loss is being in a calorie deficit.

OnHerSolidFoundations · 23/03/2024 13:25

I'm not. Apart from eating as usual.
Wondering if anyone had tried taking it with this in mind

This only works if you stop eating basically - 1 tbsp oil and 2 tbsp flax seeds blended with water and down in one. Fills me all day so I has 1 meal only - I lost 1 stone in 1 month. My bro uses 'bulletproof' coffee the same way which is coffee with 25g butter added. But you do not eat as well!

concernedchild · 23/03/2024 13:27

How much?

You're essentially adding 100+ calories into your diet. Olive oil is good for you but it's also extremely high in calories

"In conclusion, extra virgin olive oil is an excellent way to prevent obesity because it is rich in monounsaturated fats, polyphenols, and other beneficial compounds that can help reduce hunger, cravings, and inflammation. To get the most out of extra virgin olive oil, it should be incorporated every day into the diet, but in moderation."

"Taking a shot of olive oil every day could help with weight loss by "reducing body fat". An expert explained how it can speed up the metabolism, suppress the appetite and promote fat-burning. Diet is key when it comes to losing weight and choosing the right foods is important for weight loss and overall health."

I don't think anyone is saying to drink gallons.

Again. Balanced diet. Calorie deficit.

The olive oil diet
The cabbage diet
The various shake diets
The Keto diet
The Cambridge diet

All these things have one thing in common: a calorie fucking deficit.
