Can anyone recommend a dumbbell strength workout video for beginners?

I’m 60 and a beginner.

Have decided I need to start lifting weights to improve strength. Or else Pilates?

Can anyone recommend a good video?

I really like Caroline Girvan dumbbell workouts on YouTube.

BlueBlueBerries · 25/02/2024 11:04

Hasfit is great for beginners, really lovely husband and wife and very encouraging!

PansyPosy · 25/02/2024 11:53

Thanks that’s great. I don’t know anything about weights - so this will be a good start.

(Maybe I’ll look at Pilates later on.)

Caroline Girvan is not for beginners.

swedex · 25/02/2024 11:57

Cheryl lift with c on YouTube
Or bodyfit with Amy
Or if you want something very light and gentle to ease you in yes2next which is a woman in her late 40s and her mum
I actually really enjoy her workouts nice and gentle
I find Caroline girvan a bit too intense!

swedex · 25/02/2024 11:58

Also yoga /pilates
Yoga with Kassandra or Sarah Beth yoga both on YouTube

PansyPosy · 25/02/2024 11:59

Yes I saw yestonext last night, with the woman and her mum, did look nice and gentle.

30 Day Shred by Jillian Michaels is a really good jump start if you're starting from zero. It does have a bit of cardio in it but it's all modifiable.

It's £5 to stream on Amazon.

Whatsgoingonwithyourhead · 25/02/2024 12:28

Jillian Michael's.. again not beginner.

Op you could look at Jessica's smith..loads of free YouTube to get you started

OfMiceandWomen · 25/02/2024 12:29

I find fabulous 50s on you tube good.
There are some workouts with weights.

AmaryllisChorus · 25/02/2024 12:37

I like Bodyfit or Kettlebells With Amy. I started with her 8 minute kettle bell workout and ended up going to bootcamp five times a week.

TheTripThatWasnt · 25/02/2024 12:40

If you're on Instagram (or FB probably) look up a PT called Infinite Balance. She has a brilliant 6 week dumbbell course which is perfect for beginners, but you can make it harder as you get better. It's very good indeed.

spriots · 25/02/2024 12:41

Do not try to start with Caroline Girvan - I don't know why anyone would suggest that to a 60 year old beginner.

I would try Madfit, Lucy Wyndham Reed, or Fitbymik

devildeepbluesea · 25/02/2024 12:41

I love Caroline Girvan but agree with @Whatsgoingonwithyourhead , she is not for beginners. But remember her name Oo, for when you’ve done a few other programmes.

PansyPosy · 25/02/2024 13:06

ta, I have lots to be getting on with :)

I bought 2X 2lb dumbbells as I am such a beginner, but maybe I should think re. kettlebells too for later. I’ll look at all the videos.

afaloren · 25/02/2024 13:07

I really like FitbyMik, she does quite a few all-standing dumbbell workouts so you don’t have to be getting up and down off the floor.

Bruisername · 25/02/2024 13:08

Agree that fitbymik on YouTube is great for beginners. The all standing workout is less intimidating somehow!

MerryChristmasToYou · 25/02/2024 13:13

join a class or hire a PT

Eh? 30 Day Shred is 100% beginner. She has two back up trainers working out with her - one doing a harder version and one doing the basic version. It's perfect for newbies.

I was 16 stone the first time I did it. I even used water bottles as hand weights I was so inexperienced.

1AnotherOne · 25/02/2024 13:25

The peloton app has both and much more. Yoga, pilates, barre, weights, shadow boxing, cardio, meditation. It’s great value for money.

Blimey. I found that one HARD!!!

greenacrylicpaint · 25/02/2024 14:27

build up core first.
risk of injury is higher if you start without a good strong core.
yoga or pilates are great for that.

look up on youtube core exercises for runners.

LeonardoAcropolis · 25/02/2024 14:35

I think Joe Wicks has a few beginners' kettle bell workouts on YouTube.

ButtCheeks · 25/02/2024 14:42

Lift with Cee! She’s in her 50s and is fantastic. Highly recommend

Whatsgoingonwithyourhead · 27/02/2024 07:43

Oh. I came across senior shape fitness on you tube...its really good!
