Healthy breakfast

What do naturally slim people or those who have lost a lot of weight eat for breakfast?
I love breakfast but now I'm trying to make better choices I'd like to know what is a healthy breakfast. I'd love a bowl of fruit with yoghurt but that's just a lot of sugar. Two slices of toast with butter? Is that better or worse than fruit? What other options are there?
I can't bear porridge or oats so that takes out a few options that I know are healthy.

My painful answer is nothing. Breakfast kicks off my appetite so I don't have any and wait for lunch. I have much more control then.
Basically, intermittent fasting. Sorry!

Grimchmas · 11/02/2024 08:44

I'm not naturally or in any way slim 😅 but the glucose goddess has a really good selection of ideas for savoury breakfasts, if that helps. I've been reading her book recently.

I’m of a slim body type but exercise a lot to maintain it.

i eat full fat Greek yoghurt (eg FA-GE) which is high in protein, NOT greek style yoghurt. With half an apple or pear or banana chopped on to it, a little honey, sprinkling of cinnamon, tablespoon of oats, and some chia seeds. Sometimes a boiled egg on the side if I’ve exercised that morning.

the Greek yoghurt is really filling!

NoImRightYoureWrong · 11/02/2024 08:47

I have linseed, 40g full fat Greek yogurt, a sprinkling of nuts and seeds, 10g of chia seeds, 2 Brazil nuts and a coffee.
I’m 8stone 8 but used to be pushing 13&1/2.
I just eat less calories overall by tracking everything I eat on My Fitness Pal. Breakfast is 361 calories but it keeps me full.

Lottapianos · 11/02/2024 08:48

I am a dedicated breakfast eater. There is nothing wrong with fruit and yogurt - don't believe the rubbish about fruit being 'bad for you' coz of sugar. Fruit has a hell of a lot going for it

I need carbs as well as protein at every meal. I do a lot of porridge and overnight oats but I know that's not your thing. There are loads of breakfast loaf recipes around which use bananas as a base, and you can add some dried fruit, nuts and seeds to the mix too. I often make something like that at the weekend, and have 2 slices every morning with greek yogurt. Always full fat, never buy the low fat stuff

Some people enjoy eggs, avocado, tomato etc in some combination (scrambled / omelette) - might be good if you like a savoury breakfast

Nothing! Unless it's exceptional like being away for the weekend or something. It's an easy one for me to miss.

A tablespoon of Greek Yoghurt, a handful of berries, a sprinkling of homemade granola, with a dash of cinnamon.

Two eggs cooked to your preference.

SeriouslySad · 11/02/2024 08:56

Protein at breakfast is the best bet;

  • porridge with some kind of fruit and either protein powder of skyr yogurt. I don’t tend to worry about sugar from fruit.
  • eggs, lots of different options available and can make egg muffins ahead of time if needed
  • Bacon (fat removed in looking to reduce calories). I line with bagel and cream cheese.

Kefir.
I forgot to add I have a small glass of kefir each morning. The unflavoured kind.
I actually found this helped me drop the last few pounds that I couldn’t shift. It takes, iirc from a study or programme or something, 3 months of daily drinking for it to improve good gut bacteria.

brightpompoms · 11/02/2024 08:59

Have you considered intermittent fasting? Many people on that don't have breakfast at all.

I do IF but eat three meals. My breakfast is porridge with frozen berries, banana, nuts, seeds, wheat germ, and mashed cannellini beans.

I know the beans seem crazy but you can't taste them and they fill you up.

ohtowinthelottery · 11/02/2024 09:01

Porridge with blueberries is a totally different breakfast to just plain porridge, believe me. I use frozen blueberries from the supermarket and add a spoonful of chia seeds.

WeRateSquirrels · 11/02/2024 09:01

Greek yogurt (we make our own), muesli (also homemade with lots of nuts and seeds), whatever fruit came in the fruit/veg box plus a topping of chia and flax seeds with a few almonds.

Itwasfinetillitwasnt · 11/02/2024 09:06

I'm with@foghead on this one not eating breakfast (except on special occasions) has been a game changer for me. I went from a 14/16 to an 8 and kept it off. I find on the rare occasions I have breakfast it just kick starts me wanting to eat. At first not eating breakfast was awful so I just moved my breakfast back a bit each week, now I often don't eat till12-1 without thinking about it.

christmascalypso · 11/02/2024 09:12

Cereal normally special K or branflakes or granola with a spoonful of toasted seeds and blueberries or chopped up banana. If I know I have to have an early lunch, I just eat a banana for breakfast. Occasionally have scrambled egg on one slice of toast

AmaryllisChorus · 11/02/2024 09:21

I usually have Skyr high protein naturally low fat Icelandic yoghurt, with a sprinkling of cinnamon and a scoop of blueberries. If I need it to be more substantial, I add a few chopped walnuts and a drizzle of honey. In summer, I sometimes have fresh strawberries or frozen raspberries instead, and sometimes go for Greek or Greek-style yoghurt if there's no Skyr on sale.

When I get bored of that I sometimes have either a slice of sugar free wholemeal toast (Warburtons) with a poached egg or a slice of seed bread (Vogel) with butter and marmite. Normally I prefer to avoid bread as it can trigger carb cravings later, but a single slice of either of these two brands seems to keep blood sugar stable.

Icedlatteplease · 11/02/2024 09:28

Various breakfasts when I have been Losing weight:
1)microwave scrambled egg, spinach with wholewheat tortilla wrap from tesco (the one in the whole foods aisle that's only 120cal) 240cal (mostly this one)
2) (a bit of a treat or when I was especially hungry) salmon (cheap frozen salmon no skin) poached egg
3) breakfast burritos (make in bulk and freeze, use the above tortilla wrap) about 270cals
4)scrambled egg and wholewheat pitta
5) smal amount of chorizo, baby tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach, any other handy veg dry fried together in a pan
6) a large skimmed milk coffee
7) frittata (made enbulk and freeze) usually with mushrooms, onion and sometimes sliced tomato on top. Made this with everything from full fat cheese (about 300 cal a portion) to cottage cheese(108 kcal a portion!)

I can't do nothing. I tend to have one breakfast for a while and then a different one

soupfiend · 11/02/2024 09:33

Ive had to learn to love porridge, I have porridge made with milk and protein powder and have chopped prunes in it. Its much sweeter than I would like and high in carbs but the rest of my day is much lower. I need it for the fibre so am putting up with it for now but would rather have something savoury if Im honest

xyz111 · 11/02/2024 09:39

No one ever got fat from eating too much fruit. Fruit and yogurt is fine if that's what you want.

midgetastic · 11/02/2024 09:42

Fruit ( banana ) and yogurt
Toast and cheese or peanut butter or jam ( and / or ) ( 1 or 2 slices homemade bread )
Eggs and toast

It varies according to the days plans and how hungry I am

breakfastdinnerandtea · 11/02/2024 09:44

I've done IF in the past and skipping breakfast was the hardest part, not only due to the hunger but because I really do love breakfast, but I know I'm eating the wrong things for it anyway.

I guess I've never thought about being able to have breakfast on special occasions while doing IF. I think I have a rigid mindset where I can't possibly have breakfast without ruining the whole thing and that's what I struggle with the most. If I fall off the bandwagon once I fall off for good.
And I guess there's nothing stopping me having breakfast for dinner if I want to, is there? I could have a bowl of cornflakes or a full English for dinner if that's what I wanted. Sometimes I forget I'm an adult and I'm just sticking to arbitrary rules that aren't even rules.

I try and have two meals a day. But if you're a breakfast person have protein. An egg, some smoked salmon, a handful of tomatoes is good.

HoweverWeare · 11/02/2024 09:53

I have fruit and yogurt kefir most days. Sometimes fruit and cheese. I don’t like a heavy breakfast and I tend to eat a late breakfast (10:00) and I eat lunch about 4 hours later. Enjoy your breakfast at anytime of the day, sounds like a good idea.

MoreLidlThanWaitrose · 11/02/2024 09:53

This morning I had a protein pudding, and two (fake) lotus biscuits dipped in my coffee. I’ll have a piece of fruit mid morning. Not the lowest in sugar, but it was filling, satisfied a craving, and less than 250 calories.

When I have time, eggs are brilliant. High protein/low fat yoghurt is also great - I have a massive sweet tooth in the morning so often mix in a small amount of Nutella or jam. Equally sometimes one slice of toast with a tiny smear of something sweet and fruit with cinnamon is a good quick option.

I’ve found the most important thing is to drink loads of water. I used to mistake thirst for hunger first thing whereas when I’m properly hydrated I don’t feel the need for a massive meal first thing.

sciencemama · 11/02/2024 09:58

Normally nothing but if I'm hungry or wake up late I have half a bowl of cereal or porridge with fruit, sometimes Greek yogurt with fruit and of course a coffee!

Catswillbecats · 11/02/2024 10:00

Last year I did Zoe. My best day for blood sugar was when I had eggs, baked beans, mushrooms and halloumi. I was full until dinner time and my blood sugar was even all day.
Usually I have overnight oats as I leave for work at 6.50 and can't face food that early. I can eat overnight oats at my desk.
Oats, almond milk, chia seeds, cinnamon, and berries or apple/pear.
