I need to shift this weight (2.5-3 3 stone) I’ve overindulged on the lead up to Christmas and tbh after Christmas Day and today I feel sick so instead of waiting until January; I’m starting tomorrow. Going to do 1200 calories and limit carbs and alcohol where I can. I will let myself have a Prosecco or two New Year’s Eve, but want to start eating better now.
my daughter is 18 months so don’t have the just had a baby excuse anymore, it needs to come off before I get any bigger.

anyone else?

Yep I'm in. Feel lethargic from Christmas eating and drinking. Going to dry Jan , 1200 calories, exercise bike and walking. 1.5 to 2 stone needs to go (again!) and for the final time)

As someone who has lost 3 stone (which is all I wanted to lose) and kept it off for well over a year now, I would urge you all to make slow changes. An all or nothing approach is not going to help you as it's very hard to stick to and when you eventually crack (which you will do if you're banning absolutely everything you like to eat!) you'll feel like a failure and therefore be starting the next time from a much worse position, psychologically speaking. I would suggest starting from a moderate (2-300 calorie) deficit from your TDEE then once you're in the swing of things with gradual adoption of healthy habits you can reduce a little further.

Great advice I hope those who come back in 6 weeks all upset and fed up listen to! Slow weight loss is the best kind of weight loss. This is like trying to run a marathon having never done any training to do so. 1200 calories from the word go, down from 3000+ cals a day puts your body and mental health under strain, you will always be hungry and more likely to binge eat the wrong foods. You can just start by making healthy swaps and cutting down on processed foods, or even tracking your normal calories to see what they are and then cutting 500 off from that.

Isit2024yet · 27/12/2023 08:30

I started on 26th December. This year has been awful so I decided on Christmas Day that my present to myself needs to be that I look after myself mentally and physically.

I always feel better mentally for doing exercise / going for a walk so I need to do that more. No idea how much I weigh but I’m a size 16 and whilst that’s not awful, I know I look better and feel better if I lose some weight.

So my plan to make it manageable and to not be overwhelmed or whatever is to be more mindful of what I eat and walk a mile a day. It takes 15 minutes and that’s v doable. If I then choose to do more great, but that it my minimum.

Whitard81 · 27/12/2023 09:30

also in! some good advice here, hoping for some accountability via this thread.

Violet877 · 27/12/2023 09:36

Some great advice on here thanks, so have given it more thought.

I’ve decided to weigh myself and look on MFP what losing a lb a week would look like, so restricting 500 cals a week which is 1400 calories. If I’m being honest whenever I go too low on calories I end up going back to where I started. I did the same last new year and I lost a stone then put it all back on again so will start on 1400 and see how that goes for the next couple of weeks.

I weigh 13 stone today which was really hard to see, and the heaviest I’ve been (apart from full term pregnancy!) I’d like to get to 11 first then get to 10 and a half again. Maybe if I try it this way more steadily it will work long term? I want this to come off and stay off now

I'm in and start today, I feel absolutely huge, like I have been blown up with an air pump. I can feel it behind my knees when I bend my legs, I feel it when I bend my arms in the crease of my elbow. I am totally disgusted with myself. I am WFH today and am literally surrounded by 12 cupcakes, 2 tubs of quality street, 1 tub of roses, 1 tub of heros, other various chocolate, a very large tin of biscuits and an unopened fruit cake big enough to feed 12-15 people. It's all out on the table surrounding me. I am not touching any of it. If I don't start, I will be OK. If I have just one choc then I will see it as a failure and I will binge.

I have 2 stone to lose. I don't want to go out looking like this or for anyone to see me. My friend is desperate to go out out but I keep putting her off. None of my clothes fit, I am down to only 1 pair of trousers to wear in the day. I hate how I look atm.

CherryogDog · 27/12/2023 10:24

I'm in please!
Absolutely disgusted with myself.
Long story short, I was a fat kid, yo yo'd through adulthood.
Got very ill around 7 years ago and just ate non stop through boredom.
I needed major surgery and one day just realised I needed to get fit if I was going to recover easier.
I followed the boot camp light on here, and started working out, hiking and then running.
The weight fell off me, from 14 stone to a toned 9 stone.
Kept it off for about 4 years, but chronic health problems have affected my exercise and I started to eat really badly.
This morning I weight in at 10s 5lbs, and it's all flab.
I live in a very flat area, but the last 2 days I've driven to a hilly area and walked for an hour. Hope to keep up the momentum and add some weights/HIIT routines in soon.
Food wise initially stop eating crap, ie sweets, cakes, crisps, and then ease my self back into low carb.
I naturally only eat twice a day, only when I'm hungry, but struggle to stop once I've started.
Thanks @Violet877 for starting this thread, hoping to keep up the momentum, and sorry for the long essay!

CherryogDog · 27/12/2023 10:36

Just adding that calorie counting has never worked for me, I'm 60 and have tried over the years, but the low carbing did, I know some people don't agree about cutting some foods out.
Also learning about why I was over eating, my parents had lived through rationing, so it was eat everything on your plate and get "rewarded" with a pudding.
So any time I wanted something sweet I couldn't unless I ate something savoury first. Even if it was a bag of crisps!
When I worked long shifts in the NHS I would eat at every opportunity because I was anxious about getting hungry and it being ages until my break. There was always tins of sweets and boxes of cakes and I couldn't resist.
Now I sometimes don't eat until 2pm, the food's there when I'm ready, even though it's not very healthy.
I'll shut up now!

SchoolQuestionnaire · 27/12/2023 11:00

This is a great idea, can I please join?

I’m mid forties with two stone to lose and I don’t want to be here next Christmas. I feel so unattractive and old and I’ve lost my confidence.

My plan is to watch what I eat between now and NY without being too strict. More protein, some days off the alcohol, continuing to work out and only one mince pie or piece of Christmas cake instead of both as well as all of the chocolates washed down with Baileys! I’ve a boozy lunch date, guests coming and lunch out on NY day planned but after that I will do dry January and cut sugar and processed food right down.

I don’t get on with calorie counting but I find that focusing on increasing protein and vegetables and limiting processed carbs works for me and is manageable as long as I’m organised eg get up early enough to make my eggs, make lunch for work rather than buying it, batch cook dinners and have easy options in the house. So really planning ahead and being more organised is the key for me.

Menora · 27/12/2023 11:05

Calorie counting doesn’t have to be a negative experience of just eating really dull foods. It can be a useful tool to re-educate yourself on realistic nutritional values and set yourself limits and goals. Being 100-200 cals over your daily allowance isn’t going to completely stall all your progress. You also learn the hard way about being hungry having used your allowance to eat low volume foods and then readjust your approach to meals. For instance soup is pretty low cal and you can eat loads of it, but if you add in 5 slices of bread with it, with butter, it takes up a lot more of your allowance so you might only have 1, or 2. You might eat 3 chocolates instead of 10

In the early days of starting out I would actually hide all the treats out of your view so you don’t keep looking at them and make sure you plan out your meals the next few days so you know what you will be eating

YoBeaches · 27/12/2023 11:14

I'm in too. Need to loose a stone and a half. I've lost weight before post baby and the only way for me is to increase my excercise and cut my calories. Before Christmas I started having 2 days a week on lower calories and getting out walking/ running again.

I've also signed up for a running/swimming event in June as I find a physical goal keeps me motivated.

I eat too many carbs, and drink too much alcohol so some big cuts hear to get a head start and feel better in a couple of weeks. This helps motivation too.

ElizaCBennett · 27/12/2023 11:16

I’d encourage you to check out a low carb way of eating. Cut out the bread, cake, biscuits and pasta mainly. Continue to eat meat, fish, eggs etc. I lost 36 pounds last year by doing this. Admittedly I did it because I was worried about my health after a close relative had gall bladder issues and I was getting terrible heartburn. I’ve been overweight for most of my adult life and I lost the weight really quickly and easily and the heartburn disappeared. I’ve added some of the carbs back when I want to now and again but have finally successfully changed my eating habits. Good luck

ElizaCBennett · 27/12/2023 11:16

Sorry for the underlining 😂

We are off to Tom Kerridge’s pub on January 6th so diet begins on the 7th.

It is then 17 weeks until my birthday so I have 17 weeks of being totally on it to make a massive kick start. I will need to stay on the healthy eating for good but this first 17 weeks is where it begins.

That's ten days away? You can make great progress in that time. Why not start now? Ridiculous putting it off until then!

Menora · 27/12/2023 11:51

I think the term low carb diet is misleading, cake obviously isn’t going to be a staple of anyone’s diet and is not an essential carb. Some of the first things you stop eating to lose weight would be cake, crisps and excess white UP bread. Keto diet is an extreme version of low carbing and it’s pretty tough to follow with side effects.

However humans still should eat carbs to be able to go to the toilet properly and function with energy. You don’t get as much fibre from proteins and none in fats. Carbs are vegetables and not bad for you. People should promote whole grain versions of carbohydrates, not completely avoiding eating them at all costs. You will be ok eating rice, it’s an ancient food that billions of non obese people eat every day.

Guavafish1 · 27/12/2023 11:52

I have a personal trainer starting on Friday. I've lost 10kg in 2023. I would like to lose and 10kg in 2024

greentreez23 · 27/12/2023 12:26

Had a good start. Feeling positive. Have stocked the fridge and freezer with fruit, veg and lean meat

TheWeatherOutsideIs · 27/12/2023 12:34

Bloody hell. You’re right 🫣 thanks folks! Apologies, head up my ass following Xmas

TheWeatherOutsideIs · 27/12/2023 12:43

I haven’t weighed myself because that’s just foolish for me after Xmas with a history of an ED, but I’ve been to the gym and eaten a healthy brunch: banana, coffee and poached egg on toast.

I don’t tend to follow any kind of diet / calorie limit as again I find it triggering. So I just make healthy choices, real whole food wherever possible (but I do have one slice of bread a day as my ultra processed thing as I love eggs and haven’t found an appropriate substitute for bread with them), only eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m full, and aim to move more.

I don’t eat after dinner just because I have a bath and brush / floss and too lazy to do it again so I naturally fast between 6:30pm and 9:30am as I don’t eat breakfast until after the school run.

I trust my body to do the rest (lost a stone this year doing that which is fine for me as it feels more sustainable but I didn’t include exercise).

not in a huge rush again, I’m close to my goal weight so it won’t happen quickly. But exercise now in my arsenal, hoping to lose that last half a stone by summer so I feel more confident in a bikini around the pool.

good luck ladies 💪🏻

FestiveRobin · 27/12/2023 17:01

I was going to start today but we ended up stuck in traffic for a few hours on the motorway today so we're having a curry for dinner Grin so I will start tomorrow. I'm working from tomorrow so that actually makes it easier!

FestiveRobin · 27/12/2023 17:06

I need to lose 6kg and will just cut out the crap (crisps, sweets, chocolate). I'll skip breakfast (don't like it anyway), have a larger lunch and a smaller dinner. Still can't do exercise so mine does need to be about sensible calories.

TheWeatherOutsideIs · 27/12/2023 17:11

@FestiveRobin that makes a lot of difference on its own.

I’ve had a hot chocolate made with milk and whipped cream, I was hungry and fancied it. The chocolate part is sugar and cocoa powder so no chemicals and therefore fits within my plan. Making pesto pasta later with rice pasta, chicken and loads of veg. Probably pine nuts too.

FestiveRobin · 27/12/2023 17:26

Sounds lovely!

Violet877 · 27/12/2023 19:29

Ive done quite well today, I'm not being too strict just decided to cut back on eating too much instead, had an orange, a white coffee, tomato soup with a slice of cheese on toast, did have a snack with three crackers and Brie/stilton.

Met friends and had a couple of cokes instead of alcohol, and making a turkey “shepherds” pie with leftovers for dinner, tbh i feel better by just not drinking and snacking constantly all day! I think slow and steady will be better and will get stricter during January.
