Healthy, filling, low prep breakfast...does it exist?

Can't find anything for breakfast to help me lose weight! Needs to be filling so I don't want to snack an hour later. Also needs to be quick to prep as I have a very clingy 14mo and find prepping food a at the mo.

I don't like overnight oats but willing to try them again if anyone has any tips on making them a bit nicer? What do you eat for breakfast if you're trying to lose weight?

Asked a friend and she said 'an apple', good for her but if that was me I'd be on the biscuits half am hour later so I need something actually filling!

I make a batch of granola and keep it in a glass jar. Lasts me about a week. Have a Google for Nigella's recipe. Mine is basically oats and flaked rice (from health food shop) but you could just use oats. Walnuts and hazelnuts, sliced almonds, seeds, spices (ginger and cinnamon) sultanas, maybe coconut. Some olive oil or coconut oil. Low oven for 45 mins or so. I have it with tinned pineapple or some frozen (defrost in microwave) raspberries. Is really delicious and I don't snack.

Egg muffins are easy to prep in advance and full of protein so you’ll keep full for longer. I use cheese and ham or chicken and add peppers, spinach or whatever vegetables are around.

Saschka · 19/12/2023 23:02

High protein yoghurt. And a very big skimmed milk latte.

JaffaCake24 · 19/12/2023 23:07

If you mix low fat Greek yogurt, a tablespoon of chia seeds and a few mixed chopped nuts and some dried fruit you’ll be full for hours and you’ll get no blood sugar spike either.

Try Zoe Nutrition if you want to eat more healthy without feeling hungry. Expensive but it changes the way you eat forever.

Yogurt, fruit and low sugar granola

SgtJuneAckland · 19/12/2023 23:17

Today I had Greek yoghurt, walnuts, tinned pears and a small drizzle of honey. Soup for lunch, stir-fry for dinner with plenty of veg , prawns and brown rice.
I may or may not have also eaten some christmas chocolate at work but all in all not too bad and definitely not hungry

Protein works have a great breakfast shake if you're willing to try a meal replacement. It's super filling and nutritious!

What would you recommend? Is Slim First okay?

CherryJones1 · 19/12/2023 23:30

I have chopped fruit / berries, greek yogurt, chia seeds, apple 8 cinnamon flaxseed powder

I vary it with different fruit, sometimes add nuts, sometimes a drizzle of peanut butter or honey

Have you tried intermittent fasting? I am so much hungrier if I eat something (anything!) for breakfast than if I don’t - and I feel better, have more energy & focus.

I used to be an avid breakfast person, as soon as I got up, cereal, then toast. Then mid morning snack.

Very hungry by lunchtime,

Afternoon snack then dinner around 8,

Now I'm a 16:8 faster, I don't eat until mid afternoon, eat in a 8 hour window and don't feel as hungry, eat healthily but have wine and treats as well.

I NEVER thought I'd go without breakfast ever, and was shocked at those who did listening to my rumbling belly😆.

Losing weight gradually too.

WombatBombat · 19/12/2023 23:33

I do baked oats with protein powder & Greek yoghurt. Sometimes I’ll add in peanut butter too. I make four portions on a Sunday night to do Mon - Thurs in Tupperware and reheat in microwave.

Less than 400 cal and about 25g of protein.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 19/12/2023 23:35

Another vote for eggs. I usually do scrambled and have now mastered cracking an egg one handed whilst holding a baby on my hip.

Alternatively, boiled eggs can be left in the fridge for a couple of days. (That requires planning so I find scrambled easier).

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 19/12/2023 23:36

Porridge in the microwave here. I make it with skimmed lactose free milk, then add a spoon of peanut butter and a handful of dried fruit when it’s cooked. I often eat a couple of Babybel as a snack mid morning at work though.

caringcarer · 19/12/2023 23:47

Scrambled eggs and I have 1/2 fat sausage with it and a few baked beans.

Lizzieregina · 19/12/2023 23:52

I had 2 Weetabix and a good bit of milk (1%) every morning when I was trying to lose weight.

It kept me full for about 6 hours.

Lost 3 stone in 10 months.

Jux · 19/12/2023 23:54

I mix ordinary jumbo oats from local healthfood shop with a ton of natural yoghurt and chuck fruit in it, whtever I've got. Do it the night before and keep in fridge so it takes no time in the morning, the oats have softened by then. Delicious.

Another one, one or two bananas blitzed with an avocado and a little mlk. I call it flavoured air.

I'm not dieting, mind, so have no idea of calories or anything.

RagzRebooted · 19/12/2023 23:59

Breakfast makes me hungry unless I eat a massive fry up, then I'm full all day. Small breakfast, no matter what it is and I'm hungry a few hours later. No breakfast and I'm fine until 1pm. Like a PP, intermittent fasting works for me.

crystalize · 20/12/2023 05:26

Never thought I'd be able to skip brekkie but wanted to try the intermittent fasting 16/8...... Sip coffee until lunchtime around 1230 or whatever and find it kills the appetite. I found it so easy as when I used to eat in the morning I'd be hungry again mid morning and having more food/snacks. I've finally shifted that extra stubborn weight I'd carried for years.

I like to have my 'breakfast' at lunch time which is frozen berries/mango, put in microwave to defrost, natural bio yoghurt or kefir, nutty granola, blob of peanut butter and sprinkle whatever else I fancy such as flaxseed blend, turmeric blend, cacao nibs. My teenage son and I experiment with this and its bloody delicious. I take it to work in a tub.

Aubree17 · 20/12/2023 05:31

Oat Granola, Greek yoghurt, some raisins and berries (blueberries/strawberries/raspberries/blackberries). Yum especially with the oykos yoghurt which is creamy and a little higher in calories.

ElleDeeCB · 20/12/2023 06:08

Beans on toast with lots of grated cheese. Cook the beans in the microwave on the plate you’ll be eating them off whilst toast is in the toaster.

As others have said it’s the protein (beans) and fat (cheese) you need to stay full so don’t overdo it on the toast but be more generous with the cheese.
I find that porridge or overnight oats makes my blood sugar spike and I actually end up hungrier later on.

ElleDeeCB · 20/12/2023 06:10

Also watch the amount of sugar or sweetener in yoghurt / granola / fruit.

Baked beans have sugar but you could make a batch of your own breakfast beans to last several days if you want to watch the sugar content.

ProfessorPeppy · 20/12/2023 06:12

I agree with @grizzlygrump. I can’t lose weight if I eat breakfast, it kick starts my appetite for the day. I have lunch around 11 instead, and just have coffee first thing.

CoatOfArms · 20/12/2023 23:14

I’m a big overnight oats fan and I think the key is adding what you like. I prefer mine with raspberries blueberries and banana, others might prefer apple and cinnamon. I also skip breakfast and have my oats about 1pm, then dinner between 6 and 7.

MintJulia · 20/12/2023 23:27

I have home made wholemeal apple bread, made at the weekend and frozen into portions. I just put in a warm oven for five minutes.

Or porridge oats, mixed with chopped apple and a few sultanas and water, and microwaved for 2 minutes.

Both are filling, quick & healthy.

jelly79 · 20/12/2023 23:34

Avocado and eggs
Homemade granola, yoghurt and fruit
Peanut butter and banana on toast
